Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.
When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

I am a college student at the University of Maryland and I enjoy history. i love learning about historical people and events that shaped our world.
Welcome David, Merve, and Chigozie. So glad to have you here at the History Book Club. I look forward to your posts.
Welcome to all the new members who responded so readily to my invitation to tell us a little about yourself. You are in good company with all these history buffs and if you have any questions, ask any of the moderators.
Hello, my name is Usman Ahmad. I'm from Pakistan. History has alway been my favourite subject. My primary areas of interest in history are Islamic History, History of South Asia in general but the history of British Raj up to the Partition of India in particular. History of Islam in South Asia is also a major area of interest. Besides, I'm very interested in the histories of certain particular European historical epochs like the history of Roman Empire, the Renaissance era, the age of Enlightenment, and 19th century Europe in general. In the military history WWII has my special interest. So my interests in history are widespread and omnivorous and I hope this book club will contribute in enriching my understanding of history. Excitedly looking to meet people with similar interests and having discussions about favourite topics. :)
Hello my name is Alyssa but you may call me Aly. I love history and learning new things. I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease a few years ago and have been sick so I have a lot of time on my hands to read and learn :) I live in Florida and am 26 years old.
Hi everyone. I'm currently a graduate student studying international affairs of the Asia Pacific at UC San Diego. My history interests are badly disorganized and all over the place. I started with the military history of ancient Greek and Rome (along with those of their contemporaries), but I'm currently focusing on historical minorities like the Basques, civilizations of the the Southeast Asian region, the colonial era around the world, and urban history. I'm pretty weak when it comes to China (that has to be the most historically intimidating country to study) and Latin America, but would like to learn more. I look forward to expanding my history horizons!
Welcome to new members. Enjoy reading if your interests and backgrounds.
Welcome everybody. It is so great to see new people.I want to give a particular shout-out to Aly. My wife and I have a dear friend with Crohn's, and I do hope this group gives you some therapy along the way. Dive in, everyone, and enjoy.

Welcome to Usman, Aly, and Ted. I hope you enjoy the group as much as I have. Browse through the threads and find your interest -- I look forward to reading your comments.
Hello. I've been interested in history all my life. Began my college years in Computer Science, thinking I needed a guaranteed career path, but switched to History after admitting that it was what I really wanted to study. Focused on medieval European history in school, but have branched out since. Current interests include the later Renaissance and transition to the early modern period (16th-17th centuries), the colonial and frontier experience in America, the Indian wars, the labor and progressive movements in the 19th and early 20th centuries, World War I, and various oddities as they come along.
Welcome, Robert, from another newcomer. Like you, I began in the sciences (physics, computers -- programming fortran with punch cards) but soon discovered that all those vocational preference surveys had been correct. I switched to English, however. Were (are) you a working historian? Historians always have interesting jobs.
Hello Robert, we are glad to have you as a member. We have threads in so many areas of interest it is worth exploring them all. You might be interested in those on the Renaissance: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/3...Native Americans: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/group_...

Bryan wrote: "Welcome Robert, I can understand changing gears in life to study different things. Look forward to your posts."Welcome to the group, Robert. Always nice to have another Robert! Also, I share your interest in the Indian Wars.
Thanks for the welcomes!Charles: No, I've never been a working historian. I worked as a journalist for many years, and then helped start up an Internet company. I left that a couple of years ago to get into something I liked better. Been freelance writing and editing since. What about you -- did you end up as an English professor or teacher?
Alisa: Thanks for the links. I read the group guidelines and such before joining. And I just posted in a different group using the "add book/author" feature, so I think I've got that down. I'm going to go surf those threads you pointed me to!
Bryan: Changing gears in life, yes, that has been my specialty. :) It'll probably take me a week or so to get my bearings, but I think I'll be able to offer some interesting comments after that!
Robert: Yes, it's nice to find a Robert club (most places seem to have one!). Which threads have the best Indian Wars discussions?
Robert wrote: "Thanks for the welcomes!Charles: No, I've never been a working historian. I worked as a journalist for many years, and then helped start up an Internet company. I left that a couple of years ago ..."
Neither a professor or a teacher. My first graduate degree was an MFA in creative writing, and then a library degree. I spent most of my academic career as a scholar of sorts, building academic library collections in a variety of subjects. It's a specialty that doesn't exist anymore -- too expensive. Since retirement I've taken up teaching creative writing to beginners.
Bryan, thank you for the link to the Native American discussion, something I'm quite interested in but hadn't yet found in my trolling for threads. Perhaps I can contribute something to the topic on the West.
My names Denise,Love anything to do with Geneaology or Historical figures. I am swept away by tales of history's past.
Robert wrote: "Robert: Yes, it's nice to find a Robert club (most places seem to have one!). Which threads have the best Indian Wars discussions?"I see that Bryan has answered your question re discussion threads. Looks like we have other things in common, as I've spent most of my adult life as a professional journalist and journalism teacher.
My name is Denise, I have always been a big History fan. Love anything to do with Geneaology or History.
Hi, my name is Ben Newton, and I live in the Bay Area in Northern California. I am a proud History geek, and I love most areas of history I have run into. I think what i really love is seeing the hidden threads that hold all of human experience together. Lately I have been bouncing between the new flood of WWII novels, learning more about my new home in Northern California, and an eclectic mix of fiction. Personally, I like a good mix non-fiction History with some well-written historical fiction.
Welcome Robert and Denise. Robert I remember those punch cards and the huge computer science building. Large rubber bands were my best friend to keep those cards together. I was a better programmer in those days because sub-routines and sparse code were an economic necessity at the university.
Denise, I too love genealogy. Such a fun and fulfilling hobby.
Welcome to both of you and I look forward to reading your posts.
Welcome, Ben from California. We have an active World War II folder and book reads.
