SOLVED. YA: golden apple, coming of age? [s]

I'm looking for a book that I read in middle school (I'm now 22).

It was a coming of age story about a boy that went on some sort of spiritual quest and ended up finding (earning?) a golden apple, that I think saved his village or family or something. There was some kind of mountain (a tunnel through the mountain?) involved.

Also, it was definitely a chapter book and not a short story or picture book.

I think it's Firegold, by Dia Calhoun. The main character, Jonathon, goes to the far off Red Mountain to connect with his true heritage. During a coming of age trial, he chooses a path THROUGH the mountain, rather than around it (your tunnel?). There, he discovers the mythical Firegold apple and brings it back to his father to save his family's farm.
