This topic is open for discussion of
The Diviners by Libba Bray. Be Prepared for Spoilers.

Synopsis:

Evie O'Neill has been exiled from her boring old hometown and shipped off to the bustling streets of New York City--and she is pos-i-toot-ly thrilled. New York is the city of speakeasies, shopping, and movie palaces! Soon enough, Evie is running with glamorous Ziegfield girls and rakish pickpockets. The only catch is Evie has to live with her Uncle Will, curator of The Museum of American Folklore, Superstition, and the Occult--also known as "The Museum of the Creepy Crawlies."

When a rash of occult-based murders comes to light, Evie and her uncle are right in the thick of the investigation. And through it all, Evie has a secret: a mysterious power that could help catch the killer--if he doesn't catch her first.

I gave up on this book at about 40% last month.. maybe I'll give it another go as I really wanted to like it - the reviews are so good!

message 4: by Lisarenee (new) - added it

Lisarenee | 7659 comments I got the audio book and have to see if I got the hardback.

message 5: by willaful (new)

willaful I just finished the audiobook, thought it was terrific! Very funny, with loads of energy, and scary too.

Maybe I should've got the audiobook then..lol I'm not sure why I just found it a chore. I had the book for 3 weeks and just couldn't bring myself to keep reading. Maybe I just wasn't in the right headspace at the time. I will try again with this group as I have it down as part of my GR Choice Award challenge

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments There will be a chapter breakdown posted eventually. You need to do one set of DQs for the 7% Challenge. You can post your review at the end of the "buddy read," if you desire, ❀Oo❀.

message 8: by Karen ⊰✿, Fiction Aficionado (new) - rated it 3 stars

Karen ⊰✿ | 16593 comments Mod
Just to clarify - do you mean write one set of questions, or answer one set? Thanks :)

message 9: by Lisa Kay (last edited May 23, 2013 04:39PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments I meant write. But, I guess I should amend that to "volunteer." Someone may do them all. **shrugs** Who knows? Or maybe you can join together with others on your Team and write a day's worth together?

message 10: by Karen ⊰✿, Fiction Aficionado (new) - rated it 3 stars

Karen ⊰✿ | 16593 comments Mod
Thanks LisaKay!

Ok, I officially volunteer to write a days worth of DQs for this book

:)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments I actually picked this up at the library today in hardcover. I'd love to hear the audio. I can take a peek at it and present some different options for a Chapter Breakdown.

I'll also see if we can have it not overlap with A Discovery of Witches, Karen.

Karen ⊰✿ | 16593 comments Mod
So will you be the mod running this one Lisa Kay? I did attempt the book once before and although it is alot of pages the type was pretty big.

I haven't picked up A Discovery of witches yet, but I'll do that next week and have a stab at a reading schedule :)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments I'm not sure if I'll be the main mod on this or not, Karen. Some of the other mods might join in, too. I'll keep you posted.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Willaful, ❀Oo❀, Karen, about how many pages - or percent of the book - can you read a day?

message 15: by Karen ⊰✿, Fiction Aficionado (new) - rated it 3 stars

Karen ⊰✿ | 16593 comments Mod
I think because of the large type, 75-100 pages per day is fine for me. That would be about 30 minutes of reading.
But I'm happy with whatever pace people prefer as I always have a few books on-the-go at any one time :)

message 16: by Jex (new)

Jex (jexball) | 2227 comments I tend to be behind no matter what (someday I'll take a speed reading class or something) so I'll go with whatever the group wants.

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 705 comments Jex wrote: "I tend to be behind no matter what (someday I'll take a speed reading class or something) so I'll go with whatever the group wants."

Agreeing --- I always thought I was a pretty fast reader until I joined GR.

Also, I thought for this to count for 7%, we only had to answer DQs, not actually write up some of the questions.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments I know the Mods will need help doing the DQs for this one, JoLene. It is quite a "chunkster."

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 705 comments Ok, but to get the points for as category 4, do we have to create discussion questions or just answer and participate in the discussion.

message 20: by Moderators of NBRC, Challenger-in-Chief (new) - added it

Moderators of NBRC | 33496 comments Mod
Well, we are looking at that again. If the books that are being "revisited" have DQs, we may only have one set of "revisted/what did you think/how was this 'buddy read' different than the last" type thing.

We are discussing it.

SandyC (sandyc88) | 1193 comments I would like to participate in this group read. I can create a set of DQ's for the 7/7 task. :-)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Great, Sandy! Thanks so much.

Ashlynn Engelhard When do we start reading this book?

message 24: by Karen ⊰✿, Fiction Aficionado (last edited May 27, 2013 06:28PM) (new) - rated it 3 stars

Karen ⊰✿ | 16593 comments Mod
June 2nd Ashlynn. The mods will post a suggested reading schedule just before ; we usually do 50-100 pages per day depending on the book (some books have HUGE font and 100 pages is do-able, whereas for others 100 pages would take hours..lol)

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 705 comments I'm happy to sign up for the June 3 set of questions.....going to Library tomorrow to get the book.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Great, JoLene! Thanks.

Kayla (kaylasreadingroom) | 48 comments I'll have to see if I can figure out digital loans from my public library. Sounds like an interesting book! :]

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Neat, Kayla! I hope you can join us.

Cathie (catitude) | 999 comments I am on a waiting list for this book at my library. I am hoping it will come in on time?

Question: If we can't read a book at the scheduled time can we come back and discuss the questions when we get the book? Could this be applied to the 7% Comp in some way? (I am actually on the waiting list for all 3 botm's for this month ~ frustrating because I want to read them all!)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Yes, Cathie. The Mods are discussing things, but that option looks very good.

I've just got this book. It's currently £2.99 on amazon for kindle - might also be on offer in other parts of the world.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Thanks, Sophie.

It does NOT affect our plans, ❀Oo❀. These are BOMs and were voted on by all NBRC members. But, thank you for letting us know.

Ashley Marie (darlingdoor) | 1733 comments Got my copy from the library! Can't wait to start!

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 705 comments Picked mine up at the library today --- it's a bit large since they only have hard covers. Always nice to read and get a workout at the same time :-D

Karen ⊰✿ | 16593 comments Mod
lol JoLene!
It is times like that I love my kindle! Even the paperback is pretty hefty, so I can only imagine what you will be holding :)

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 705 comments I know --- I'm trying not to buy more books when the library has them, but I might need a new rule that says if the book is more than 500 pages --- I can buy on the Kindle. I mean, really --- it's an issue of safety :-D

message 48: by Cathie (new) - added it

Cathie (catitude) | 999 comments LOl, but then you wouldn't get your workout JoLene :-)
