Turtlecollector Dennis | 1164 comments June 6 DQs: The Hotsy Totsy--Naughty John
Pg.246-309; Submitted by Lisa Kay

49. Maybe I’ve watched too many old movies, but I thought “The Hotsy Totsy” chapter was very well done. I could picture the setting, the characters, the raid. You?

Yes, I could picture it very well. I liked all the different passageways and nooks that our main characters tried escaping the police from. It was interesting that almost all of the characters ended up in the same place, but only a few overlapped with each other. The whole group has still not gotten together.

50. BOOK QUOTE: Did any of them have a power so frightening it had to be kept locked down tight? -- Did I miss something? Isn’t this the first inkling we’ve had that Theta has powers?

This is the first time remember it mentioning Theta might have a power. Also, what did she run away from where her name was Betty? Was she part of a circus or something since she implied that she has been performing since childhood.

51. Looks like Theta and Memphis are attracted to one another. I didn’t see that coming, either. Do you think they match up well? They certainly have something to talk about – the exact same dream! Any thoughts on what it means?

Didn't see that one coming, but they do match up well I think. Since they are having the same dream, I think they have the same or very similar powers.

52. Well, Naughty John’s victims are certainly diverse. Why did he take Eugene Meriwether’s feet? Is this really just a “build a body” thing, or is it related to specific offerings?

Right now I think he really is trying to build a body. It reminded me of the TV show Bones, where over a series of episodes, she investigates several murders all by the same person who takes different body parts in order to eventually form one complete body.

53. Were you surprised that Uncle Will decided to send Evie back to Ohio after one infraction – even given it was as severe as it was. On the heels of that came Mabel calling her selfish. Think these things will help Evie grow up and think before she acts impulsively?

I was a little surprised, but I think stress of the murder investigation caused him not to want to deal with Evie. It seems like the fight with Mabel might be the first little step toward Evie thinking about what she is doing. No one changes overnight though.

54. So…Uncle Will had no idea of Evie’s powers. Comments on the glove reveal scene? Who was the woman Evie saw? What was her relationship to Uncle Will?

I think something bad happened to the woman and Uncle Will feels that he might have had something to do with it. She was probably an old girlfriend.

55. We get a little more on Jericho’s past: infantile paralysis, time in an iron lung, and the eventual desertion by his family, his ability to forgive, and his lack of belief in miracles. Comments? BOOKQUOTE: How about his cryptic comment, “They tried something new. I was lucky; it worked.” Whatever was it that really worked?

I am not sure when doctors started transplanting organs, but I think it could be some kind of transplant and the medicine he takes is the antirejection meds patients take after a transplant. He doesn't believe it is a miracle because it was scientific.

56. Oh, poor Evie. What a terrible thing to discover about how you mother feels about you. Explains her acting out. And we discover that her ability came after James’ death. Comments. However, just when I think she’s growing up, she lies about Reporter Woodhouse’s article and poses for the shutterbug.

Like I said earlier, no one changes overnight and she really thinks that she is more likely to stay in NY if the museum does well and she can get herself noticed. I am not sure what her brother's death has to do with anything except that he tries to help her in her dreams.

57. Could you have done what Evie did with Eugene Meriwether’s ring? What are the headaches about? Will Uncle Will know?

I couldn't have done what Evie did. I think the headaches are an aftereffect of using her powers and Uncle Will does realize this.

Set number 2 here now! 1st BOTM I've got involved with so sorry if I'm spoiling the flow of the conversation.

12. The repetition of the name John (from Naughty John) made me suspect that this was not going to end well for Ruta. I suspect he's the manifestation of the spirit.

13. I'm more confused what the first 4 offerings were. Feels like we have join the middle of a plot rather than that Hobbes is starting at the beginning...

14. I'm not sure yet. Not sure whether he's the devil like other people have suggested or if he's a spirit from the 1800s some point.

15. I think Memphis still has the gift and whatever it is that went wrong has put him off using it. Will be good to find out what's behind it.

16. I think this is likely to be something to do with her grieving over his death. I hadn't registered about the no eyes thing until people pointed it out! I think he might be trying to show her the way and might eventually help her save herself/someone else.

17. Ouch that's a lot of money! I hadn't been thinking about it.

18. I think he probably will. Think it's going to be the light relief story line and I suspect he and Evie will end up together in the end.

19. I don't think he had much of a choice. If the gift is hereditary (which it seems to be at this point), it's likely he knows about the gift and suspects she might be able to help in the end. Jericho I'm not sure about yet.

20. I suspect that it will end up with some of the books of the Apocrypha playing in with the whore of Babylon phrase having a larger role in those books than it does in Revelations. The apocrypha is a collection of books that were taken out of/never part of the bible - I can't explain their position in Christian literature very clearly I'm afraid.

21. Isaiah, Memphis’ brother, also has a gift. Were you surprised by that? What do was in the files that Sister Walker pulled out after her session with Isaiah?
I was a bit surprised. This was the point I started to think that there's a hereditary link to the gifts people have. Undecided on Sister Walker so far, like a lot else in the book!

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments I'll be responding to you all individually soon.

I just wanted to make sure... I'm more than willing to do the DQs for the 7th. However, if you are doing the 7% Solution Challenge in the Tower Teams Reading Challenge, they are granting a "blinkie" cupcake for one set of DQs create. Does anyone want to do a set?

Ashley Marie (darlingdoor) | 1733 comments 36. So Henry has gifts of his own…dreamwalking. I like it. Did you think he had special abilities when he appeared in Evie’s dream? Who do you think Louis might be? A brother? Lover? Friend?
I didn't pick up on this at all until Bray spelled it out for me! I just thought Evie was having a weird dream. I think Louis is either his brother or a lover. I'm curious, but there already seems to be a really large cast of characters in this book! I'm going to start having trouble keeping them all straight/what power belongs to who.

37. We learn more about the Diviners from Sister Walker. Did you think it was odd that she provided a rational explanation for Isaiah’s nighttime trances? I would have thought her first suspicion would be some kind of paranormal activity at work.
I think she was just explaining it away to make Memphis feel better, but is suspicious that it means more, especially after the chair incident.

38. Why doesn’t Memphis tell Sister Walker about his healing abilities? And, knowing that Isaiah has gifts, why didn’t Sister Walker be more careful with the chair??
Hindsight is always 20/20! I think, especially now that we know more about his mother's death, that Memphis is afraid of his gift and doesn't want anyone to know he can still do it. What was up with that man and the choice he made Memphis make?!?! Creepy!

39. The Pillar Of Fire Church…now there are some lovely people! (Did anyone else think of the anti-vampire cult on True Blood?) Did you think at this point that one of them could be behind the murders, especially when Evie saw the pendant on Brother Jacob Call. Brother Call calls it protection from the Beast, which is interesting because I had been thinking it was a sinister symbol.
I didn't think of the Fellowship of the Sun until you just said that, but absolutely! I am so confused about this church. Are they actually Brethren? Did they have something to do with bringing Naughty John back? I normally figure out the mystery in books well before I'm supposed to, but Bray has me stumped (which I love!). I think it's still a sinister symbol, and the Pillar of Fire Church is up to no good.

40. What are your impressions of Jericho? I had been expecting him to be a dashing hero (not sure why I thought that). He’s quiet, studious, very smart, and not socially adept. He was clearly uncomfortable posing as Evie’s husband. Do you think he may become more “heroic” as the novel progresses?
I find all of the Nietzsche references in relation to Jericho really interesting. One of the chapters is titled "Ubermensch," which is another reference to a philosophical thought of Nietzsche's (in addition to eternal return). Nietzsche thought of the Ubermensch as an "over-man" - the next stage in human development (some mistranslate this term as a "superman," which I think fits more with the way Bray is writing Jericho. I don't think she wants him thought of as more 'of the world' so much as just more than the average person.) I wonder if Jericho is a sort of experiment - he seems really strong and smart! Maybe he's a bionic man. I think he'll start to play a more heroic role.

41. Thoughts on the Brethren cult? Their story is interesting, but I can’t imagine why anyone would think it’s a good idea to raise the anti-Christ. Who took the missing page that tells how to destroy the Beast?
Apocalyptic cults are scary. I'm fascinated by this sort of stuff, so I'm eating up the cult aspect of the story! I hope we get to learn more about how they're connected to Naughty John, and I'm curious to learn if they're connected to the Pillar of Fire Church. I thought it was interesting that one of their offerings was in the position of the Hanged Man, just like the front of the pamphlet at the Church. I think that the Brethren didn't all die in that fire, and are still active somehow.

42. The killings appear to be “offerings” of the Harlot Adorned and the Idle son (offerings 5 & 6). Did “offerings” 1 – 4 take place in the past?
That's what I'm thinking. Maybe before Naughty John died? I wonder if there's a statute of limitations on offerings...

43. So now we have a mysterious relationship between Jericho and Marlowe (whom I thought of as Tony Stark). What did Marlowe do for (to?) Jericho? What are the meds for? Something to do with his hand? Why does Jericho call him “Sir”?
I kind of jumped the gun and answered this previously. Still going with my bionic/wolverine theory. I think he's been genetically or structurally altered somehow and needs whatever Marlowe gave him to stay healthy.
I wonder if Bray named Marlowe after the playwright Christopher Marlowe. One of his most famous plays is Doctor Faustus, based on the Faust story. It's about a man who sells his soul to the devil for knowledge and power...which seems to fit Bray's characterization of our Marlowe. Just a thought!

44. Uncle Will’s mystery deepens. We know he used to work for the government (doing what?), and “he was never quite the same after what happened with Rotke.”(kindle p. 218) Any speculations?
The plot thickens! I think Rotke was Jericho's precursor, and both are government experiments to create super-people. I think that's why Uncle Will took in Jericho - he still feels guilty about Rotke (whoever he might be).

45. Why is Jericho so cold to Mabel? Does he have something against her parents’ politics?
I think he's just frustrated that she's parroting their beliefs instead of holding her own. I liked that Evie pushed back on this, though, since he really does do the same thing with Uncle Will and Nietzsche!

46. We learn about the time Memphis lost his powers. What a sad story. Who was the man in his vision who asked him to choose life or death? Thoughts on this scene?
I jumped the gun on this one, too. So creepy! I wonder if he's Death or the Devil? Maybe? Not sure, but really interesting!

47. We get the backstory on the Knowles house (of course I thought of Beyonce). Very creepy tale. Who is Mr. Hobbes? Was this his first foray into evildoing, or has he been around much longer? Is he Naughty John?
Evie would be the 1920's Sasha Fierce, just sayin'. I think Mr. Hobbes is Naughty John before he was killed. I'm not sure what to make of this, honestly. I don't know how many times he's "come back."

48. What do you think of the world-building in this book? I think the author’s doing a great job giving us information gradually.
I'm really loving this story so far. It's so complicated, but everything fits together, and I'm finding the world-building really believable.

Turtlecollector Dennis | 1164 comments I think I can do a set but can it be on the 8th or preferably the 9th when I don't have to be at work so early in the morning?

49. Maybe I’ve watched too many old movies, but I thought “The Hotsy Totsy” chapter was very well done. I could picture the setting, the characters, the raid. You?
Yes it was very well done.

50. BOOK QUOTE: Did any of them have a power so frightening it had to be kept locked down tight? -- Did I miss something? Isn’t this the first inkling we’ve had that Theta has powers?
Yes, now I'm curious as to what her powers are.

51. Looks like Theta and Memphis are attracted to one another. I didn’t see that coming, either. Do you think they match up well? They certainly have something to talk about – the exact same dream! Any thoughts on what it means?
I think they match up very well, they are both artistic and sensitive. And they have the same recurring dream. I think it means they are both needed to resolve something, they have to work together.

52. Well, Naughty John’s victims are certainly diverse. Why did he take Eugene Meriwether’s feet? Is this really just a “build a body” thing, or is it related to specific offerings?
I think the body parts taken are needed to make a vessel for the Dragon, and in a way they are offerings made by the victims though not voluntary.

53. Were you surprised that Uncle Will decided to send Evie back to Ohio after one infraction – even given it was as severe as it was. On the heels of that came Mabel calling her selfish. Think these things will help Evie grow up and think before she acts impulsively?
No, he did say to her when he caught her drinking that if she did something wrong, he would send her back to her parents in Ohio. She definitly did something wrong. Maybe she has learned her lesson, but I think she is still an impulsive person and she doesn't think before she acts.

54. So…Uncle Will had no idea of Evie’s powers. Comments on the glove reveal scene? Who was the woman Evie saw? What was her relationship to Uncle Will?
I think the woman was a lost love. And had something to do with that government project or the Rotke thing.

I loved his reason for forgiving his parents. The thing that "cured" him may be the blue (I think it was blue) stuff that was in the vials given to him by Mr. Marlow. He described it as his vitamins.

56. Oh, poor Evie. What a terrible thing to discover about how you mother feels about you. Explains her acting out. And we discover that her ability came after James’ death. Comments. However, just when I think she’s growing up, she lies about Reporter Woodhouse’s article and poses for the shutterbug.
I feel sorry for her, I think it explains the things she does to get noticed. It fells to me she is a very lonely girl trying to hide it by acting out.

57. Could you have done what Evie did with Eugene Meriwether’s ring? What are the headaches about? Will Uncle Will know?
Maybe, It just shows how brave Evie is and she is willing to do a lot to help out. I think uncle Will suspects that the headaches are connected to the visions.

Turtlecollector Dennis | 1164 comments @Imke

#56 - I agree that she seems like a lonely girl trying to hide it by getting attention, but right now she annoys me too much to feel sorry for her.

message 214: by Clare (new)

Clare Butler | 294 comments I'm getting a bit behind but here are my answers to the second set of questions - sorry - I will try to catch up!

12. “And upon her forehead was a name written in Mystery: Babylon the Great, the Harlot” - Wow! City of Dreams – what a chapter!! Did you suspect that John Hobbes was up to no good? What or who do you think he is ?

I am guessing that John Hobbes is a ghost or a spirit who was the wind that went into the old house in the first chapter. He felt spooky to me right from the start as he was too convenient – he was Polish and so was she (yet didn’t have a Polish sounding name?)

13. Do you think that Hobbes was looking for “loose girls” (like Jack the Ripper) ? He refers to this being the 5th offering as commanded by the Lord God, so this is obviously a ritual. What is he trying to do?

Perhaps he is trying to purge himself of something or punish them for something a girl did to him when he was younger/alive?

14. Any guesses as to who Naughty John is??? BTW, I don’t recommend googling the term because I didn’t find anything and you can only guess what type of sites came up :-D?

I wonder if Naughty John is one side of John Hobbes personality – perhaps he is a schizophrenic and this is one of his personalities?

15. Memphis has the gift of healing, or at least had. Any ideas why he won’t heal the chorus girl?

No idea….must have missed that bit!

16. What is the significance of Evie’s re-occurring dream about her brother. What is he trying to show her? Does this have anything to do with her gift of divining?

He is obviously something missing from her life – she needs a bit of a role model I think.

17. Evie wants to buy stockings with the $10 winnings from the bet with Theta (on if Mabel will cut her hair). I looked up the value of $10 --- it would be about $120 in today’s terms. That’s some pretty expensive stockings. Did anyone else notice that?

Good point – hadn’t thought of that!

18. Do you think Sam will bring back the money? Have your impressions changed?
No still think he might be a baddie!

19. Did you think that Uncle Will should have let Evie come along? I was actually impressed that she was able to stay mostly composed --- until she had the flash of Ruta’s death. Jericho was there to comfort her – do you think he knows about her gift?

I thought he was spooky before and I think he is just being weird now, I don’t think he knows about her gift. I don’t think I could have stayed as composed as Evie was. The way the author described the body really made it come alive – I could imagine it…yuk!

20. “The whore of Babylon” phrase is in the book of Revelations and is often a way to refer to false religions. How do we think this plays into the story? What about the pentacle?

Perhaps it is a reference to the divining – perhaps that is a false religion? I didn’t know about the upside-down pentacle so that was interesting. Isn’t that something to do with witchcraft?

21. Isaiah, Memphis’ brother, also has a gift. Were you surprised by that? What do was in the files that Sister Walker pulled out after her session with Isaiah?

Can’t remember this bit, will read the last chapter again!

Pg.246-309; Submitted by Lisa Kay

49. Maybe I’ve watched too many old movies, but I thought “The Hotsy Totsy” chapter was very well done. I could picture the setting, the characters, the raid. You?

I thought so as well. I liked the meeting between Theta and Memphis, and I was more than happy to have Evie out of the picture for a while. I find her so pretentious, and when she got caught, all I thought was, “serves you right!” And when Mabel got angry with her, I also felt satisfaction. I’m hoping this will end Evie’s selfish streak, because I really don’t like her very much.

50. BOOK QUOTE: Did any of them have a power so frightening it had to be kept locked down tight? -- Did I miss something? Isn’t this the first inkling we’ve had that Theta has powers?

I thought she might because of how Evie freaked out trying to read whatever object Theta gave her. And all of the important characters so far seem to have powers.

51. Looks like Theta and Memphis are attracted to one another. I didn’t see that coming, either. Do you think they match up well? They certainly have something to talk about – the exact same dream! Any thoughts on what it means?

Everything about it sounds ominous to me. Storm clouds, a dead tree, corn fields, something coming toward them in a dust cloud? All I get from that is something is coming and it’s BAD NEWS. Gee, I wonder what’s coming?

52. Well, Naughty John’s victims are certainly diverse. Why did he take Eugene Meriwether’s feet? Is this really just a “build a body” thing, or is it related to specific offerings?

I don’t know what else to make of it, besides the murders being a cross between the Exorcist and Frankenstein.

53. Were you surprised that Uncle Will decided to send Evie back to Ohio after one infraction – even given it was as severe as it was. On the heels of that came Mabel calling her selfish. Think these things will help Evie grow up and think before she acts impulsively?

I think she’ll always act impulsively, that’s just how she is. I just hope she learns to think about how her actions affect other people. That’s what bothers me most about her character.

54. So…Uncle Will had no idea of Evie’s powers. Comments on the glove reveal scene? Who was the woman Evie saw? What was her relationship to Uncle Will

Judging by his reaction, the woman was someone he loved and something either happened to her, or it just didn’t work out.

THEY TURNED HIM INTO A SUPERHUMAN LIKE CAPTAIN AMERICA! >:D

All joking aside, shady rich man giving him a case of “vitamins”…It probably isn’t a miracle to Jericho because he has to meet with Marlowe once a year, and he needs the stuff Marlowe gives him.

56. Oh, poor Evie. What a terrible thing to discover about how you mother feels about you. Explains her acting out. And we discover that her ability came after James’ death. Comments. However, just when I think she’s growing up, she lies about Reporter Woodhouse’s article and poses for the shutterbug.

I feel bad for her, but that’s still no excuse for her to treat her friend and her uncle the way she did. In the book that Evie was reading about Diviners, Liberty Anne said that they could communicate with the dead. Maybe you can only become a Diviner if someone close to you dies? Memphis and Isaiah’s mother died. Evie’s brother. Theta and Henry both seem to have had a hard life, so someone close to them probably died, too.

57. Could you have done what Evie did with Eugene Meriwether’s ring? What are the headaches about? Will Uncle Will know?
Not a chance in hell. I’d throw up everywhere. I think the headaches are just Evie not using her power efficiently and it strains her. Uncle Will seemed to know something about it, but kept it to himself.

#53 – Ah. Good point. It did cause him to go there. And good point; it really has been his only rule.

#54 – I’m thinking old flame. But, I don’t know if she is still alive.

#56 – “strangle-ski” LMBO!

#50 – Yes, in hindsight. Mine being 20/20, and all.

#52 – Oh, man-oh-man! I hadn’t thought of that. You could be on to something.

#53 – Yes, I don’t blame Mabel for finally standing up to Evie. I do like Evie, though, and hope she matures from all this.

#54 – I’m thinking fiancé, too. I’m thinking she died.

#55 – That’s the question!! Which one?

#56 – True. It isn’t as if she had an epiphany.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments @ Parvathy

#52 – Yeah, I haven’t committed one way other the other on this one.

#53 – I can see why Evie would want her friend there with her, and also misguided sense of thinking she’s introducing her to a good time. Still, it is another area of growth for her to consider another person’s preferences and dislikes. Good point about the “killer on the loose.”

#56 – Yes, for all her faults, I like Evie, too. I think there is hope for her.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments @ Sophie

#1 – It is a fascinating era, before the depression and censorship.

#6 – So interesting that people associate trouble with Sam.

#8 – I was convinced that Evie was lying about Mabel Rose and was using her fake existence to get out. So, I was surprised she was real. Interesting that having a “Pen Pal” was so common back then. The delay in gratification, waiting for a letter.

#13 – Yes, the first four have been brought up as to what they were again, and their significance.

#14 – I’m thinking he’s from the 1800’s.

#20 – I hadn’t even considered the Apocrypha. Could be!

#49 – Yes, I liked that almost all of them were there.

#50 – Oh! Missed that bit about “performing” – but you’re right. Interesting.

#51 – Oh again! I didn’t think about them having similar powers. Hmmm…

#52 – Ick.

#53 – Very true. Baby steps.

#54 – I’m thinking Uncle Will is somehow connected, but not at fault, if she has died.

#55 – First successful organ transplant was of a kidney in 1954, from one identical twin to another. (Brigham Hospital in Boston, by Dr. David Hume.)

#38 – I was just talking about hindsight! LOL! Yes, creepy.

#38 – “Pillar of Fire Church is up to no good.”
I concur!

#41 – Oh! Forgot that about the Hanged Man. Hmmm…

#42 – “I wonder if there's a statute of limitations on offerings...”
You are so bad. LOL!

#43 – Whoa.

#44 – Double whoa.

#47 – As much as I love Beyoncé, I have to admit, I had to Google Sasha Fierce. Thanks for the pop culture education.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments @ Imke

#50 – Great point about them both being artistic.

#54 – I’m thinking you might be right about the government project.

#55 - **smacks forehead** Forgot the vials were blue – and it’s my favorite color.

#57 – Yes, brave is a characteristic of Evie I like.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments @ Clare

#14 – He could be schizophrenic…

#20 – “Isn’t that something to do with witchcraft?”
Can be. It has been used in a lot of different religions.

#56 – Interesting theory; I hadn’t considered that (about having dead loved ones). Still, I think there is hope for Evie.

#57 – **chuckles**

Ashley Marie (darlingdoor) | 1733 comments 49. Maybe I’ve watched too many old movies, but I thought “The Hotsy Totsy” chapter was very well done. I could picture the setting, the characters, the raid. You?
I had the club scene from Casablanca in my head, and all I could think of was Claude Rains saying, "I'm shocked - SHOCKED! - to find that gambling is going on in here!" with all of the talk of the cops being on the take. Seriously though, I'm really impressed with the world building in this book - I can picture the atmosphere so clearly!

50. BOOK QUOTE: Did any of them have a power so frightening it had to be kept locked down tight? -- Did I miss something? Isn’t this the first inkling we’ve had that Theta has powers?
I was a little baffled at this, too. I thought she was a normal. I'm curious to see what's so terrible about her ability!

51. Looks like Theta and Memphis are attracted to one another. I didn’t see that coming, either. Do you think they match up well? They certainly have something to talk about – the exact same dream! Any thoughts on what it means?
I actually really liked that they ended up meeting and liking each other. They seem to fit together, in my opinion. Theta is so jaded, maybe a dreamer like Memphis will help her be happy. And Memphis seems so lost and confused about his gift, maybe Theta can help him, too. Both of them seem to be very conflicted about being a Diviner.

52. Well, Naughty John’s victims are certainly diverse. Why did he take Eugene Meriwether’s feet? Is this really just a “build a body” thing, or is it related to specific offerings?
I don't think this is right, but I keep thinking of Frankenstein. It's weird that he's working through a whole body...definitely creepy and gross.

53. Were you surprised that Uncle Will decided to send Evie back to Ohio after one infraction – even given it was as severe as it was. On the heels of that came Mabel calling her selfish. Think these things will help Evie grow up and think before she acts impulsively?
I hope it helps her to see that her actions impact others. I'm more sensitive to Evie's behavior after learning more about her (the brooch and her mother). I'm not surprised Uncle Will overreacted. He probably doesn't have the first clue how to deal with a young woman, let alone one acting up!

54. So…Uncle Will had no idea of Evie’s powers. Comments on the glove reveal scene? Who was the woman Evie saw? What was her relationship to Uncle Will?
It seemed like Will was young in the vision (I think?), so maybe his mother/Evie's grandmother? It seemed more like a girlfriend, though, from the way she was teasing him. Maybe I misinterpreted how young he was. I thought it was very interesting how Evie finally revealed herself when she was about to be shipped off. I liked that Uncle Will accepted her and didn't treat her differently or like she was a crazy person.

He's secretly Wolverine, I'm convinced. All of his chapters seem to reference Nietzsche (God is Dead was the reference this time), so I really think he's supposed to be an ubermensch of some sort. Whatever happened to him, he seems so sad.

56. Oh, poor Evie. What a terrible thing to discover about how you mother feels about you. Explains her acting out. And we discover that her ability came after James’ death. Comments. However, just when I think she’s growing up, she lies about Reporter Woodhouse’s article and poses for the shutterbug.
If my parents had basically wished me dead and ignored me, I'd want attention, too. That chapter broke my heart for poor Evie. What sort of person thinks that about their child? How incredibly sad. I don't really blame her for the reporter stuff. She thinks she's helping the museum, and if it means a little center stage time for her, then so be it. I think Woodhouse is going to be the next target!

57. Could you have done what Evie did with Eugene Meriwether’s ring? What are the headaches about? Will Uncle Will know?
I like to think I could, but I'm not sure. If it meant stopping a killer I probably would have made myself like she did. I wonder if the headaches are because her gift comes from James/his death? Or because it's not a normal thing to be able to do. It makes me think of the TV show Warehouse 13. Every object on that show has a downside. Even if it helps you in one way, it hurts you in another. That's what Evie's headaches make me think of.

#49 – FOFLMBO! Good one, AM.

#50 – Ditto on Theta’s ability.

#52 – “...definitely creepy and gross.”
Ditto!

#53 – Now, see… I don’t think he overreacted. **shrugs** I was surprised, because he seems a marshmallow… but I think he was justified. And maybe a bit worried about the serial killer running amuck?

#54 – Yeah, it was a last-ditch effort on Evie’s part.

#55 – You’re killing me! I’m laughing so hard, I can’t type! I haven’t read Nietzsche or his Übermensch in a long, long time.

#56 – Woodhouse!?! Eep!

#57 – I’ve watched that show. Interesting theory.

I have to keep making jokes or the scary parts of the book will give me nightmares lol!

With Uncle Will and his reaction, I have to admit - I don't have kids. I think if I did I might think he was UNDERreacting! My dad is a retired cop, and I can't tell you how many times I wasn't allowed to do something because something bad was going on, or the neighborhood where the party was at wasn't a good one, or something like that. Maybe I'm just not giving Uncle Will enough credit for being sensible!

Ashley Marie (darlingdoor) | 1733 comments Also, can I just say that I'm so glad this BOTM/Read-a-long is proving my parents wrong? I knew I would use my philosophy degree someday! LOL!

58. So a bit more information about Isaiah, and that crow was back. I was screaming at Isaiah to STOP TALKING to Gabe! haha Blind Bill Johnson sounds interesting - it is kind of the opposite gift to Memphis. Guesses on how Blind Bill's story will link in? I wonder if it is the same people that cured Jericho?

59. Theta's new number, and the crowd going to the museum with "Pentacle Killer Fever" reminded me of the musical Chicago. Do you see the similarities today with people obsessing over serial killers/sensational crime?

60. What do you think about Evie and Sam's entrepreneurial spirit at the museum? Are they "creating an atmosphere" and giving people what they want, or are they just being charletons?

61. So Memphis and Evie finally meet. Did you think Unc lied, and he actually did recognise the symbol? He seemed pretty abrupt.

62. A few people have mentioned before that this book doesn't feel very YA Fiction with the spiritual themes and murders. And now we have the storyline of Theta and Memphis being frowned upon as they seem to be a mixed race couple. What do you think - is it important for YA to explore these kinds of themes or is it just too adult?

63. Miss Addie and Lillian were very interesting. What do you think Miss Addie meant by "Such a terrible choice to have to make"?

64. So it sounds like John Hobbes is on his way back as 'The Beast' in two weeks. Margaret Walker must have a connection with Unc and have been in this situation before "It's coming back". Predictions on how he may be stopped, or do you think in this book he will come back? Btw, I googled Solomon's comet and it doesnt get any worthwhile hits, although Salomon's comet are mens hiking boots..lol

65. Do you think Project Buffalo, Blind Bill Johnson, Sam's mother and Jericho are somehow connected?

66. Poor Gabe! Do you think he manages to get away, as he is not under the bridge yet, or is he done-ski?

I think Blind Bill was part of Project Buffalo which makes use of people with powers to fight the war. Since it is the time of WWI it is not surprising. Also this people with powers suffer in physical health every time they use it. Explaining Blind Bill and Evie with all her headaches. I am think about Captain America every time Jericho and his miracle cure is mentioned.

59. Theta's new number, and the crowd going to the museum with "Pentacle Killer Fever" reminded me of the musical Chicago. Do you see the similarities today with people obsessing over serial killers/sensational crime?

Yes, People do tend to gravitate towards the Macabre. It is like when you play GTA or Infamous even if you are one of the good guys sometimes it is fun to play for the dark side. Atleast in the game just to know. So I think people get a kick out of reminding themselves of all the depraved individuals out there just so that they can feel good about themselves.

60. What do you think about Evie and Sam's entrepreneurial spirit at the museum? Are they "creating an atmosphere" and giving people what they want, or are they just being charletons?

No they are giving them what they want. Lets face it museum of creepy crawlies who would come there expecting historical facts. When people come to see something supernatural they expect supernatural or atleast anything close to it like what Evie is doing

61. So Memphis and Evie finally meet. Did you think Unc lied, and he actually did recognise the symbol? He seemed pretty abrupt.

I think he does recognize the symbol and he does know sister walker. Makes me wonder whether the girl Evie saw with her Unc in her vision is one of the diviners.

No, I think YA should incorporate notable features of their time period. It creates atmosphere and lends originality to the story.

63. Miss Addie and Lillian were very interesting. What do you think Miss Addie meant by "Such a terrible choice to have to make"?

I don't know at first I thought she was talking about Memphis then realized she was talking to Evie so it must have met her brother. Does anyone else feel like Evie's brother is not dead and he is also a part of Project Buffalo? Taken away by the government to fight a secret war

Yes I do think he would come back. Interesting thing about Solomon's comet. This means the author made that up to. Very Creative. In Dexter it was the Solar Eclipse

65. Do you think Project Buffalo, Blind Bill Johnson, Sam's mother and Jericho are somehow connected?

Yes, They all must have fought in the war one way or the other. Do you think Jericho is older than he says he is?

66. Poor Gabe! Do you think he manages to get away, as he is not under the bridge yet, or is he done-ski?

I don't know I think he is dead which will result in Evie, Unc Will and Memphis crossing paths again. I am surprised that Evie dooesn't see the eye with the lightening symbol

Quick thoughts on one of the previous sets to get me nearly caught up:

23. I'm in agreement with people that Project Buffalo is likely to be about the last group of Diviners - possibly those that stopped the Beast after the first 4 sacrifices last time round - or that they have something to do with his parents. Hadn't thought that those might be the files that Sister Walker had.?

29. I think the comet will be the showdown of the book. Naughty John and the prophecy seem to be working to it as a deadline.

30. I'd have done the same thing. It's a deep secret to reveal to everyone around.

32. My thoughts were that Tommy was willing to follow the instructions both of the gang and the stranger (to go and fetch his cane) despite not wanting to. Makes him obedient to those around him.

1. Did you know this book was going to be set in the 1920’s? I haven’t read a lot of books recently that are set in this area, have you? Especially YA. Do you get a sense of era? Flappers, Prohibition, radio, the death of Rudolph Valentino and the heiress having mannerisms of Clara Bow (both silent film sex symbols of the 1920’s), Edison’s “modern marvel,” jazz music, speakeasies, and vaudeville theater?

I did and was wondering how it would be. My hubby's grandfather and grandmother had a vaudeville act. We have a picture of him on a unicycle playing three instruments. We also have a tape of his act with trained dogs. It's kind of fun to watch.

2. Have you ever play with an Ouija board? I had no idea it was that old. I’m thinking it was a B.A.D. I.D.E.A. to not spell out G.O.O.D. B.Y.E. Right?

I have never, but my Paster when I was studying for first communion told us a creepy story about one that made me never desire to play with one. It was about a young man in the seminary who played with one and I can't remember all the details, but he ended up dead. One of the creepiest stories I'd ever heard.

Yes, I think it was a bad idea not to say good-bye.

3. What did you think was the significant of the wind, the old mansion, and the furnace in the cellar?

Wind seems to be a lot like a ghost although it seemed more like it spirited the spirit to where he wanted to be. Didn't the The Peach Keeper do something similar with the wind?

4. What was your impression of Evie O’Neill? What about after you learned of her “gift” and why she left town? Her attitude toward her mother and father’s grief over James? The lies she told the train conductor? Her need for attention? Regardless of her lack of knowledge about world current events, does she have the smarts to make it in New York City?

I think Evie was neglected after her brother died and she craves attention because of it. Sounds like she's been left to her own devices and lying outlandishly is something she finds fun.

5. What bit of poetry did Memphis Campbell write on that piece of paper? Do you think his dreams about an eye with a lightning bolt underneath are prophetic? And what of the crow following him? Eep!

That crow makes me worry he's going to die. Not sure about the eye, but I think there's more to him then meets the eye. :)

6. What did you think of Sam Lloyd? Is he a harmless charmer? Legit? Or something more sinister? Have we seen the last of him?

I don't like him at this point.

7. What did you think of Uncle Will, curator of the Museum of American Folklore, Superstition, and the Occult? Did anything in particular standout? What the cabbie said? Jericho Jones? The items in the display case? Liberty Anne? ? The reveal of who – or what – “The Diviners” are? The clippings?

Loaded question. I think this is the meet of everything, but we'll have to wait and see.

8. I have to admit, I thought Mabel Rose was going to be a fictitious person, did you? Do you like her? Pretty naïve compared to Evie, right? Can she be trusted with Evie’s secret? What about Evie’s plan for Mabel’s crush on Jericho Jones?

I thought she was real. Mabel seems to be the exact opposite of Evie. Perhaps that's why their friendship works. At this point I think Jericho has no interest in Mabel.

9. Impressions of Theta Knight, Ziegfeld girl? She comes across as much older than 17, at least on the audio. And her nickname for Evie?

She does come across as older than 17. Perhaps she's had a rough life. Evil? I think it's kind of funny.

10. The Misses Procter, Miss Lillian and Miss Adelaide, gave a creepy telling of the Bennington’s history, though Evie and Mabel shrug it off. You just know this is going to come into play in the plot, right? What about Miss Addie’s pronouncement? “You’re one of them, aren’t you, dear?” Spooky, true?

We'll have to wait and see.

11. Do you think there is more to Jericho Jones’ story about how he came to work for Evie’s uncle? Will he and Evie’s uncle go along with Evie’s idea about advertising?

I don't think they'll go for the advertising, but I do wonder about Jericho.

I'm so frustrated with everyone who gets killed in this book! Every time a murder is about to happen the victim ignores their gut feeling to run away, or call the police, or do SOMETHING differently! If I had just gotten a creepy warning about dying under a bridge and I start hearing weird sounds from near the bridge AND my gut is telling me something is wrong? I'm going to walk a block out of my way to go home. Maybe I'm silly and just added time to my walk, but I'd rather be silly and a little more tired than dead, for goodness sake!!! /endrant. I wonder if Blind Bill's sight is kind of like Evie's headaches - the price he paid for his gift? If it's happening again, like Sister Walker tried to tell Uncle Will, maybe the three of them were involved in the last situation the Diviners were needed for?

59. Theta's new number, and the crowd going to the museum with "Pentacle Killer Fever" reminded me of the musical Chicago. Do you see the similarities today with people obsessing over serial killers/sensational crime?
I totally would have been one of those people with Pentacle Killer Fever! I find this stuff so interesting - but I definitely would have been freaked out, too. I'm not as bad as my friend, though, the only thing she'll read is true crime! I don't know why people find this so fascinating, but it seems pretty universal!

60. What do you think about Evie and Sam's entrepreneurial spirit at the museum? Are they "creating an atmosphere" and giving people what they want, or are they just being charletons?
I'm on the fence about this. I don't see anything wrong with creating a spookier atmosphere and endeavoring to make people interested in the museum. I think they might be taking it a little far by making up stories about the items, though. The museum seems creepy enough without the extra help in that department.

61. So Memphis and Evie finally meet. Did you think Unc lied, and he actually did recognise the symbol? He seemed pretty abrupt.
I think he did. Uncle Will definitely knows more than he's letting on.

I think the relationship stuff is more appropriately YA than all the gore. I don't even especially find the murders to be too mature for YA - just how gruesome they are described as being (people being burnt up and having their eyes taken out is pretty heavy!). I really like that YA lit is starting to deal with real themes instead of just fluff. I don't remember reading a lot of books that helped me figure out my place in the world when I was growing up, and I think it's important that teens are exposed to things like the realities of racism, complicated relationships, and overcoming adversity in the face of challenges. I think of Harry Potter every time I talk to someone about themes in YA lit - those books covered everything from racism to sexism to war to murder! And they were wonderfully done.

63. Miss Addie and Lillian were very interesting. What do you think Miss Addie meant by "Such a terrible choice to have to make"?
I have no clue but I'm so curious! The further we get through the book, the harder time I'm having putting it down when I finish our designated chapters!

At least your googling was safer than when LK (I think it was LK...)googled Naughty John! I think Sister Walker, Uncle Will, and Blind Bill (plus others we haven't met yet) are the older generation of Diviners, and they had to stop a big bad together before. Maybe as a part of Project Buffalo? I think the new Diviners will have to use all their gifts to stop him.

65. Do you think Project Buffalo, Blind Bill Johnson, Sam's mother and Jericho are somehow connected?
Absolutely! I still think I'm right and Project Buffalo has to do with testing/organizing people with Diviner gifts to help the government.

66. Poor Gabe! Do you think he manages to get away, as he is not under the bridge yet, or is he done-ski?
I sure hope so. I think he's either dead and the diviners will connect with his spirit to help stop Naughty John, or Memphis will find him terribly hurt and heal him.

Lisarenee | 7659 comments Answers to DQ for City of Dreams----A Place in the World
Pg.060-117

12. “And upon her forehead was a name written in Mystery: Babylon the Great, the Harlot” - Wow! City of Dreams – what a chapter!! Did you suspect that John Hobbes was up to no good? What or who do you think he is ?

I did suspect he was the Naughty John. I just got a bad vibe from him.

13. Do you think that Hobbes was looking for “loose girls” (like Jack the Ripper) ? He refers to this being the 5th offering as commanded by the Lord God, so this is obviously a ritual. What is he trying to do?

No idea, but nothing good is what I'm thinking.

14. Any guesses as to who Naughty John is??? BTW, I don’t recommend googling the term because I didn’t find anything and you can only guess what type of sites came up :-D?

I swear I've hear a rhyme like it before because as it played on the audio I knew what was coming, at least part of it. I think it had to do with a butcher though not a serial killer. I'd guess Naughty John is a demon.

15. Memphis has the gift of healing, or at least had. Any ideas why he won’t heal the chorus girl?

Either he no longer has the ability or something went terribly wrong the last time he did it.

16. What is the significance of Evie’s re-occurring dream about her brother. What is he trying to show her? Does this have anything to do with her gift of divining?

This is baffling. I can't figure it out at the moment. Did he also have a gift? Is Evie's more than just reading objects? Did something happen to her brother that she doesn't know? Could he still be alive?

17. Evie wants to buy stockings with the $10 winnings from the bet with Theta (on if Mabel will cut her hair). I looked up the value of $10 --- it would be about $120 in today’s terms. That’s some pretty expensive stockings. Did anyone else notice that?

I have to wonder if perhaps the author got costs wrong? Did you ever read Death of a Salesman? The guy gave stockings to his mistress if I remember correctly so perhaps they were worth more than we imagine?

18. Do you think Sam will bring back the money? Have your impressions changed?

No. It's gone.

19. Did you think that Uncle Will should have let Evie come along? I was actually impressed that she was able to stay mostly composed --- until she had the flash of Ruta’s death. Jericho was there to comfort her – do you think he knows about her gift?

I doubt he knows and no, I don't think Uncle Will should have let her come with.

20. “The whore of Babylon” phrase is in the book of Revelations and is often a way to refer to false religions. How do we think this plays into the story? What about the pentacle?

I don't know yet, but it makes things interesting.

21. Isaiah, Memphis’ brother, also has a gift. Were you surprised by that? What do was in the files that Sister Walker pulled out after her session with Isaiah?

I don't know, but I was wondering the same thing. I think she knows more about what is going on than we know.

36. I'm not surprised that Henry has gifts. Appears at this point like every character under the age of 20 is going to have them. Not a clue about Louis - didn't pay much attention to him in the first place.

37. The fact she provides a rational explanation makes sense. She doesn't want to give anything away to anyone about the paranormal activity going on.

38. I think Memphis doesn't tell her for the same reason she doesn't properly explain to him. Neither wants to trust the other. I think Sister Walker doesn't want to acknowledge the extent of Isaiah's gift.

39. I started off thinking that Jacob Call was another incarnation of Naughty John and that the Church would be the subject of the next attack on false believers.

40. Jeriocho I still don't have a read on. Can't work out what his role is apart from potentially an awkward set of love triangles (Mabel -> Jeriocho -> Evie <- Sam )

41. Hmmm not sure. Suspect John Hobbes might have had something to do with it disappearing.

42. I think the offerings were probably in the time of Ida - in the basement that was discussed.

43. The meds might be to suppress Jericho's gift.

44. Maybe finding other people with gifts... Not a clue about Rotke.

45. I think Jericho has had to fight other people's views for a long time and has been forced to find his independence. Wondering what the significance of his name being a biblical city is...

46. I'm still not convinced that Memphis has lost his powers. I think he has lost confidence in them and is scared to use them again.

47. I think Mr Hobbes is Naughty John and that he's returned to kill Ruta. Can't work out if this is his first foray or whether he's been around a lot longer than that.

48. The world building is great, but there are a lot of strands to the story at the moment and I'm not sure how they are all going to come together. I suspect other people are right and it's building for the rest of the series. Either that or there is going to be a very quick resolution that ties things together in a way that I often find feels clumsy.

SandyC (sandyc88) | 1193 comments June 6 DQs: The Hotsy Totsy--Naughty John
Pg.246-309; Submitted by Lisa Kay

49. Maybe I’ve watched too many old movies, but I thought “The Hotsy Totsy” chapter was very well done. I could picture the setting, the characters, the raid. You?

I agree. It was very well done.

50. BOOK QUOTE: Did any of them have a power so frightening it had to be kept locked down tight? -- Did I miss something? Isn’t this the first inkling we’ve had that Theta has powers?

To the best of my recollection, yes this is the first time we're told Theta has powers.

51. Looks like Theta and Memphis are attracted to one another. I didn’t see that coming, either. Do you think they match up well? They certainly have something to talk about – the exact same dream! Any thoughts on what it means?

I didn't see that coming at all. Maybe she is "the" girl that he referred to earlier.

52. Well, Naughty John’s victims are certainly diverse. Why did he take Eugene Meriwether’s feet? Is this really just a “build a body” thing, or is it related to specific offerings?

I think it is specific to the offerings. In the Brethren's book, there were drawings of each offering. The Harlot Adroned was sightless with an eye symbol; the drawing for the Idle Son had missing hands, with hands bent in prayer as the symbol.

Were you surprised that Uncle Will decided to send Evie back to Ohio after one infraction – even given it was as severe as it was. On the heels of that came Mabel calling her selfish. Think these things will help Evie grow up and think before she acts impulsively?

I sure hope she experiences some growth and maturity. She is involved with some pretty sick stuff; I would imagine seeing dead bodies and visions of their murders would be extremely disturbing to a 17-year-old. I'm not surprised Will wanted to send her home, since it would also get her away from the danger in the city.

So…Uncle Will had no idea of Evie’s powers. Comments on the glove reveal scene? Who was the woman Evie saw? What was her relationship to Uncle Will?

I was so wrong about this. I thought for sure he suspected, and that it was a family thing. Although, he didn't seem to be extremely surprised. Maybe the woman was Rotke.

Marlowe's secret formula?

56. Oh, poor Evie. What a terrible thing to discover about how you mother feels about you. Explains her acting out. And we discover that her ability came after James’ death. Comments. However, just when I think she’s growing up, she lies about Reporter Woodhouse’s article and poses for the shutterbug.

Yeah, that would be pretty devastating. Not surprising that she lied since she craves attention. Again, I was wrong about this. I thought Woodhouse wasn't really a reporter.

57. Could you have done what Evie did with Eugene Meriwether’s ring? What are the headaches about? Will Uncle Will know?

I don't think I would have the stomach for it. I think the headaches result from using her mind...it takes a lot of mental energy to see the visions. I think Uncle Will knows more than he lets on.

Nearly caught up - am going to have to start paying attention to how much I read a day from now on!

49. It was very well done. Not sure I'd have been able to keep track of that many characters if I'd been the one writing it.

50. This is the first I can remember seeing of it, but I'm not hugely surprised given that all the others do. Will be interesting to find out what it is.

51. I think it'll be an interesting mix as they seem to have very different characters. Will also lead to trouble given the historical situation. The dream is bad news, but exactly what it signifies I don't know. The dreams look like they might be a way for all the characters to interact.

52. I think they might just be build a body. Hadn't really thought about it a huge amount, but the idea he's building a body for the beast/dragon makes sense.

53. Given that he'd warned her that he would if she drank again, not hugely. Seems like a reasonable request not to go out when there's a murderer about. I'm hoping that everyone's reactions will help her to consider the consequences of what she does. I'm still in the group of people who find her slightly annoying, but she is growing on me.

54. I think he knows about the existance of the powers, just not that people in his family had them. I'm joining other people in thinking she was his girlfriend/fiance.

55. This adds to my feeling that Marlowe isn't family to him... I suspect he was part of whatever it was that cured him.

56. She makes a lot more sense at this point and helps me to come round to her as a character. It seems like loss does have something to do with the manifestation of the powers. Her talking to the journalist is unsurprising - wouldn't expect her to change overnight.

57. I don't know... I'm about to become a doctor so I'm not squeamish in the slightest, but still not convinced. The headaches seem to be a reaction to her gift, but none of the others seem to have a reaction to theirs. She's bound to tell uncle Will at some point about it.

I'm not sure if Jericho's cure is connected the rest is. I think Blind Bill and Sister Walker used to be diviners as well as Sam's mother. Also I think that Blind Bills old ability is like (or the same as) Theta's.

Loved it, it's just like these two. People want to be fooled.

61. So Memphis and Evie finally meet. Did you think Unc lied, and he actually did recognise the symbol? He seemed pretty abrupt.
I think Unc lied, because he wants to protect Evie and doesn't want her involved.

Yes it's very importend they explore these themes especially in a YA book as these books are written more to their world and makes it easier to understand these themes.

63. Miss Addie and Lillian were very interesting. What do you think Miss Addie meant by "Such a terrible choice to have to make"?
I think she meant that James had to make the same kind of choice that Memphis had to make while he tried to heal his mother. Miss Addie was touching Evie's pendent when she said that.

I don't think he will be stopped in this book. We're over halfway through and the major players aren't even all together yet they don't even know what they are and probably have to work together.

65. Do you think Project Buffalo, Blind Bill Johnson, Sam's mother and Jericho are somehow connected?
Project Buffalo, Blind Bill Johnson and Sam's mother are connected, I'm not sure about Jericho. He might be connected through Marlowe, his name seems to coma back often to (in Evie's dream).

66. Poor Gabe! Do you think he manages to get away, as he is not under the bridge yet, or is he done-ski?
He is done-ski, he should have listened to Isaiah

58. Ahh, I like the connection with the headaches. I hadn't considered that

63. At this stage I still think James is dead, but I thought maybe the "terrible choice" was one her mother had to make between James & Evie (and maybe Evie got the context of what her mother said wrong about loving James more). I don't know, it just seems to me there is a connection between his death and what Evie heard and this comment by Miss Addie. You may be right and he is still alive though!

65. I'm not sure about Jericho. There is something funny about a comment he made in an earlier section about not being quite human. I wonder if Unc knows the truth

66. I thought she would recognise that symbol too!

58. I agree with you! But I also think that most of the time we would rather think we are being silly and ignore it then actually run. I guess with this time period too, it was much safer to be out walking at night. I think you and Parvathy are right about Evie's headaches. I wonder if that means she will lose her gift in time?

59. I guess people are just fascinated by people! Even the evil ones

60. me too. I wasn't a fan of selling the talismans

62. Totally agree. I have read so much YA recently which has followed the whole love-triangle theme I've gotten a bit over it. It is nice to read a book with a bit more meat and one that encourages people to think critically

63. I thought the choice may have been Evie's mothers between Evie and James. I found that section so intriguing!

66. I hope you are right and Gabe is not dead :(

63. I hadn't thought that. I was thinking the choice was Evie's mother between Evie and James. I can't wait to find out!

64. I think you're right. This seems to be one of those books that is a series where not much is resolved in the book, you need to read the next one.. There has been alot of setting up and there aren't many pages left!

66. :(

I kept trying to tell Isaiah to stop talking too, just like Memphis was. I think Blind Bill could be a previous attempt at a offering or maybe part of Project Buffalo.

59. Theta's new number, and the crowd going to the museum with "Pentacle Killer Fever" reminded me of the musical Chicago. Do you see the similarities today with people obsessing over serial killers/sensational crime?

Yes. I love to watch all the crime shows like CSI and Law & Order and the documentaries. My current favorite channel is ID which has all different kinds of documentaries on true crime stories. I still remember my calculus teacher in high school letting us watch the O J Simpson trial during class.

60. What do you think about Evie and Sam's entrepreneurial spirit at the museum? Are they "creating an atmosphere" and giving people what they want, or are they just being charletons?

It is a short term thing that isn't going to last. As soon as the next big media story comes along, the people aren't going to care about the "atmosphere". I wouldn't necessarily call them charlatans, but they are taking advantage of society's current interest in 'creepy' matters to improvise and embellish what they already have.

61. So Memphis and Evie finally meet. Did you think Unc lied, and he actually did recognise the symbol? He seemed pretty abrupt.

I think Uncle Will has lied about a lot of things now. He jut keeps getting more and more secretive even if on the outside he seems to be helping.

I don't think it is too adult in the context of its time period. Teens need to understand what has happened in the past and other points of view to understand how society has gotten to where it is at now and to be able to form their own opinions. Some of these issues still exist today and they have to deal with it at their own schools depending on where they live. I personally don't think it is any worse than hearing and seeing what happens in the news when another school shooting happens now.

63. Miss Addie and Lillian were very interesting. What do you think Miss Addie meant by "Such a terrible choice to have to make"?

I thought she saw something in the future about a hard choice Evie is going to have to make.

64. So it sounds like John Hobbes is on his way back as 'The Beast' in two weeks. Margaret Walker must have a connection with Unc and have been in this situation before "It's coming back". Predictions on how he may be stopped, or do you think in this book he will come back? It sounds like Uncle Will has seen this before and now all his secrets are seeming very sinister. I think he will come back, but like at the end of Harry Potter there is a weakness not many people know about that can be exploited.

65. Do you think Project Buffalo, Blind Bill Johnson, Sam's mother and Jericho are somehow connected?

Yes, I am pretty sure they are.

66. Poor Gabe! Do you think he manages to get away, as he is not under the bridge yet, or is he done-ski?

I was so surprised by this. It is possible that he might be able to get away, but not unscathed, since a messenger is supposed to be the next offering. Can you really be a messenger if you are not alive to give the message?

58. Oh, I hadn't thought that he could be a previous attempt at an offering. I guess that is also possible!

62. True. The news these days can be pretty disturbing!

63. Oh, I hadn't thought it could be a future choice...

64. Yes I wondered that myself. Because he can't come back completely or it would be a pretty despressing book! There has to be chink in the armour somewhere

I agree. I believe Blind Bill’s power was taken away from him as well. I have a feeling that Blind Bill Johnson knows exactly how Memphis must feel.

59. Theta's new number, and the crowd going to the museum with "Pentacle Killer Fever" reminded me of the musical Chicago. Do you see the similarities today with people obsessing over serial killers/sensational crime?

I believe we are numb to brutal killings/murders. Sad but True!

60. What do you think about Evie and Sam's entrepreneurial spirit at the museum? Are they "creating an atmosphere" and giving people what they want, or are they just being charletons?

I think they were trying to raise money to help keep the museum open. I think they are “creating an atmosphere” and the people are eating it up!

61. So Memphis and Evie finally meet. Did you think Unc lied, and he actually did recognise the symbol? He seemed pretty abrupt.

I believe he recognized that symbol. I wonder what he’s hiding?

62. A few people have mentioned before that this book doesn't feel very YA Fiction with the spiritual themes and murders. I think it is important for YA to explore these kinds of themes. These are themes we see discussed regularly on tv and in movies. Nothing new!

63. Miss Addie and Lillian were very interesting. What do you think Miss Addie meant by "Such a terrible choice to have to make"?

I’m not sure about Miss Addie’s comment. But Lillian sure wanted Addie to stop talking.

64. So it sounds like John Hobbes is on his way back as 'The Beast' in two weeks. Margaret Walker must have a connection with Unc and have been in this situation before "It's coming back". I hope that they will stop him before he completes the ritual. If they pulled their talents together and found a way to predict his next move.

65. Do you think Project Buffalo, Blind Bill Johnson, Sam's mother and Jericho are somehow connected?

Yes, I believe they are all connected in some way. I hope they gather more information about Project Buffalo.

66. Poor Gabe! Do you think he manages to get away, as he is not under the bridge yet, or is he done-ski?

I think Gabe is done-ski!
