Petra | 1 comments Hello, Dystopian lovers!
I'm happy to have found this group, as I would love to discuss and read some more of dystopian novels.
Generally I love reading all genre all the way from science-fiction and fantasy to non-fiction philosophy. Concerning dystopian fiction, I've read my share and among my favourite are the works of M. Atwood, 1984, the Road, and so on. I've also enjoyed the Hunger games trilogy, however I wasn't quite convinced by the Divergent series, so I never finished reading it.
I'm looking forward to sharing opinions and experiences with all of you.
Lovely to meet you,
-P

Erica | 2 comments Hi everyone. I'm Erica and dystopian novels are definitely my favorite. I'm currently reading Thunderhead (which is pretty interesting, better in the second than the first book). Dystopian novels are my favorite because they are considered fiction, but every time I read one I always think to myself, "hmm but it COULD technically happen". And I absolutely love that! I'm usually always reading and if I'm not reading, I'm hunting for new books TO read. Looking forward to being in this group and partaking in some discussions!

Currently I am reading the Sookie Stackhouse series and am enjoying it for what it is (FYI i agree vampires should burn in daylight not sparkle.... though i did enjoy those books).

Eman | 7 comments Hi, I am Eman and so far my favorite is the Red Rising series by Pierce Brown. He is an excellent dystopian writer and AMAZING storyteller! I am also fascinated by sci-fi so Red Rising is like a peanut butter cup to me :) I look forward to hearing about other books of this caliber.

message 770: by Michael (new)

Michael Bafford | 4 comments Thanks for the tip. I started Red Rising but didn't get into it right away and set it aside. 🙈 I didn't feel like starting a new huge series just then. I'd also read Red Sister shortly before and had my fill of dystopia. But I,ve heard others speak highly of R. Rising so I'll Go back someday

message 771: by Misti (new)

Misti (mswatsername31) | 3 comments Hi there, my name is Misti and this genre has lately become my favorite. Right now I am reading the Lawless series by Tarah Benner. I am on the last book of that series and I'm already getting withdrawals lol. I've read her other books and I love her writing style. I would love to hear from others about different dystopian books and favorite authors so I can continue to get my dystopian fix lol.

message 772: by David (new)

David Patneaude | 7 comments Hello Misti and all, I mentioned earlier that I was reading The Knife of Never Letting Go, the first book in Patrick Ness's Chaos Walking trilogy. I've now made it through all three, and I can highly recommend the series. It's not much of a spoiler to tell you that the dystopic society emerges on another planet, to which people have fled from another planet (earth?) that's in its dying days. If you decide to embark on this journey, fasten your seat belts!

Hello, my name is Maha. I just joined!
I do read, not a lot, but an okay amount.
And, I find myself very interested in this particular genre, not that I’m not open to reading anything.
But, I feel like I want to learn more about dystopian works. I read 1984, and Animal Farm so far. I found that I really like the style, and ideas of both works.
So, I was wondering if you guys can help me onto which dystopian book I should read next! Since I’m just beginning towards this genre, it would be better to ask someone who has an idea on the good books to read.

Thks :)

We by Yevgeny Zamyatin is another classic dystopian novel on par with the 2 you mentioned . Another you cant go wrong with is a lesser known novel Mockingbird by Walter Tevis . Also for something a little more contemporary I strongly suggest The Maddadam Trilogy by Margaret Atwood . https://www.amazon.com/MADDADDAM-TRIL...

message 778: by Nicole Howell (new)

Nicole Howell (psaiwinenothu) | 3 comments Hi I'm 29 years old and an avid reader. One of my top favorite genres to read is dystopian fiction. The Hunger Games trilogy is one of my favorites. I recently finished The Maze Runner trilogy. Not gonna lie it wasnt my favorite. I have quite a collection of ebooks on my kindle over 2k ebooks. I've been buying books and free ebooks for my kindle since 2010. I also have a nice collection of physical copies of books just need more bookcases now lol. I can easily get through a 400-500 page book a day if it keeps me glued to it. I'm on disability so I love that I can go to the library and borrow books for free. If anyone is interested feel free in adding me. I have about 14 books I'm reading on my kindle and several print copies. Currently reading Origin by Dan Brown. Always looking for new friends to discuss books with :)

message 780: by Robert (new)

Robert Bartlett (RobertBartlettAuthor) | 2 comments Hi Nicole!!! I am an author of post-apocalyptic fiction, the genre has always fascinated me. I agree with your assessment of the Hunger Games vs. The Maze Runner series as well. Have you tried One Second After by William Fortschen???

message 781: by Brian (new)

Brian (gewoonbb) | 2 comments I'm Brian. Dystopian novels are what kickstarted my love for reading 2-3 years ago (1984, Animal Farm, Brave New World, Fahrenheit 451). This year I've read The Road, Station Eleven and The Doomed City among others.

message 782: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen Rodriguez | 4 comments Hello! I'm Gretchen and I just finished Delirium by Lauren Oliver and loved it. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
Have any of you read the Uglies series? What did you think?

message 783: by Nicole Howell (new)

Nicole Howell (psaiwinenothu) | 3 comments Robert Bartlett no I haven't read that one yet but I will put it on my to be read list which is miles long lol. I believe the first dystopian fiction series I ever read without knowing about the genre was Scott Westerfelds Uglies series back when I was in high school. After reading The Hunger Games I got really into the genre. Another author I enjoy that isnt widely known is David Estes he wrote The Dwellers Saga (total of 7 books) I got the first 3 books for free read them then had to buy the others lol. I'm a voracious reader. Hopefully one day I will write my own series :) But I will definitely put that book on my TBR list. Thanks!!!!

message 784: by Louie (new)

Louie | 2 comments Hey, I'm Louie, and am 28. As an introduction to this group, here's a some of the reasons why I enjoy reading dystopias, and why i'd like to read more of them.

1. They feature incredibly creative and unique worlds and as as many ways to imagine possible futures. Chaotic, deserted, vivid, crowded, aseptic, filthy. May these futures be ruled by nature, animals, warped masterminds, creatures or governments.

2. There's different form of "truths" in dystopias, to which we can relate. Some previous fictional works anticipated notable changes in our lives, in our way of consuming, of doing politics, of shaping society. On other levels, dystopias can also carry deep truths and feelings to their core, reminding us how some of those truths and feelings are immutable, no matter times or context.

3. I like to experience through reading how much ideas and values like bravery, combativeness, brotherhood, hope and beauty can take on its full meaning in worlds that doesn't feature any sign of shelter.

First dystopia ever read : Huxley's Brave New World Brave New World
Last dystopia read : Vandermeer's Borne
Next want-to-read dystopia : I'd like to have some advices.

Note : among other types of fictional works, I appreciate anticipation and sci-fi, poetic, bizarre or metaphorical, but have a real lack of interest in fantasy.

Looking forward to dig here and find some good stuff.

Stephen Anastasi | 10 comments Hi everyone
I want to share the joy I feel now that I have finished the last edit of the rewrite, of the draft of the edit of... You get the picture ...of my novel, 'The Brotherhood of Necessity', a horrifying dystopian thriller. Think 1984 on Speed. I'll get it onto Amazon Kindle in a week or less. I gave a copy to a friend, and he ended up reading it in the bowels of a ferry (he said, "You know the ones that tip over and drown everyone") travelling around the Solomon Islands, passing each page along to the person next to him (his son), who sent it to the next (a student of mine) and then to our school's Chaplain at the end of the line). Apparently he had to tell them to back off because he wasn't as fast a reader as them, and they were hammering him for more. Hah! There is a great sense of pride one gets when a novel has the legs to get people really immersed.

I am from Southern Brazil, but I live in DC, where I am currently finishing a PhD in Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies at Georgetown. Erik McCoy (serikmccoy) | 2 comments Hey everyone! My name is Erik and I am a HUGE fan of dystopian futures and the likes.

It all started around the age of 16 when I began to question a lot of the goings on around me, reading conspiracy theories, and educating myself on everything I heard or read. My interest was peaked and I have been hooked since! So much so I wrote my own book about it!

The fact that dystopian realities rest so close to the edge of being a reality is honestly what gets me, and that is one of the reasons we all like them so much, right? :)

If you're looking for something new to read, go check out my book and enjoy!

Insurrection

message 796: by Derek (new)

Derek | 2 comments Hi,
My name is Derek Cressman. I've published two non-fiction books before, and read dystopian books when I was younger.

I've now just written my first novel, a post-Orwellian dystopian story about an inquisitive woman goes through the dreary motions of life in a not too distant Los Angeles that has lost its vivacity. Vera escapes her hollow world through a deep search within herself to avoid a deluge of commercial information. She gradually develops the capacity for independent thought, falls in love, and must then avoid a seductive technology that could render her catatonic.

There's a giveaway going for it now, that folks can check out if you like here https://www.goodreads.com/giveaway/sh...

Curious to hear what folks think, and to see posts on other new dystopian efforts.

Best,
Derek
