This assignment is for you to read as widely as possible by Monday 7th October 2013. The target is to read 15 books by this date, and additionally to share your ideas and responses about what you have read on the Goodreads site. These posts may be informal in tone, yet should be relevant, mature, informative and literary. They should be about 100-150 words long.
1. Firstly, register for Goodreads and join the '9F Reading Circle' group. To register you will need to indicate which genres you are most interested in, and to rate at least 20 books that you have read out of 5 stars. Select one of these books for your first review posting.
2. Next indicate what book you are currently reading and note why you selected it, and whether or not it is living up to your expectations.
3. Now, join the 'Year 9F Reading Circle' group so that you can connect with students in other Year 9 classes.
4. NOTE: You will write at least 15 posts on Goodreads which will include:
(i) At least 10 reviews of books that you have read yourself. These posts should initiate threads of discussion. (ii) At least 5 posts where you are responding to a class mate about a book that you both have read.
The idea is to have a broad conversation across the year level about books, and for you to review and encourage each other to read what you have enjoyed yourselves.
5. Finally, we will have oral presentations of book reviews each semester. Each student will be required to prepare a 5 minute oral presentation in dot point format, and speak about theme, character, plot, setting and language, in a book I approve. You will submit these notes as evidence of your preparation, and they will form part of your mark. These presentations will be delivered in groups of 4. The best presentation in each group will present before the whole class in a finals day, when we will elect a class winner and runner-up.
The first round of oral presentations will take place on Friday May 24th. The final, involving 7 students, will then be on Monday 27th May.
7. You may also go to http://www.insideadog.com.au/books at the State Library of Victoria. This is an interesting site for exchanging views on books with a group of students state wide.
