Andrea Warfel | 7 comments I read this book a few years ago and I'm trying to find it again but I can't remember the title or the author. I think I remember a mother and daughter reuniting and one of them works in a hair salon. I remember it was also a murder mystery book and I think at one point the daughter starts getting stalked. If anybody knows what book this might be help please.

How long ago was "a few years"? For me that could be up to 10 years--for those that are younger, could be only 2 or 3. And was it new or older when you read it?

Is this a series? And is it a "themed" type series, if so?

Is it a "modern" setting or is it one of the series that are set in the past? the Roaring 20's like in the Daisy Dalrymple series (Death at Wentwater Court is book 1) or the Civil War period? The 40's or 50's or 60's? The 90's like in the Benni Harper series Fool's Puzzle?

Sarah (sarahatothek) | 39 comments Could it be Close to a Killer by Qualey? Here's the description: Barrie Dupre, raised in the suburbs by her father and stepmother, must now spend her junior year of high school in the heart of the city with her mother, an ex-con. Daria Dupre, imprisoned for manslaughter when Barrie was five-years-old, is now the owner-operator of Killer Looks, a successful beauty salon staffed entirely by women who, one way or another, have killed someone. When two of the salon's clients are murdered in their homes, Barrie is caught up in a plot that keeps bringing her even closer to a killer. The path that leads the teen to the murderer is convoluted and the revelation of the truth smacks more of a deus ex machina than the logical end of a carefully crafted plot. However, this book is difficult to put down because of the author's deft hand with dialogue and wry way with characterization. A combination of sophisticate, smart-aleck, and innocent, Barrie collects 1950s career romances and old photographs, writing imaginative but morose stories about the people in the pictures. Every character in the book, particularly Barrie, rings true. Qualey has delivered another successful YA novel.
