Cathy | 90 comments I don't think I can resist joining up late - it is fun to track what you are reading and to stretch the boundaries even a little. I would like to know what people discovered that they didn't expect to like in Round 1?

Would someone mind emailing the spreadsheet? i'd be lost without it: aligorah@gmail.com

Jennifer (JenJen1221) | 61 comments Can someone send me the spreadsheet also???
jennay1221@gmail.com

Thanks a bunch

message 53: by Jen B (new)

Jen B (jennybee618) I can email it to the three of you tonight (if no one else has already) - I don't have it with me at work.

Yes please, and thanks!

Roseann | 66 comments I was looking through the posts for the first round and am a little confused. Are the rules being changed for shelves--I see some people with 40+ shelves on one book. Do we use just the first popular shelves that show on the book's page, or go through all of the shelves. Sorry, just want to be clear.

message 56: by Joy Marie (new)

Joy Marie from what I read, you use the first 5 pages of shelves for a book.

also, can the spreadsheet be emailed to me as well? my email address is joywhttngtn@yahoo.com

Thanks!

You use the first five pages of the popular shelves that are on each book's page. I think there are roughly 20 shelves per page (not sure of the exact number), so if EVERY shelf within those first 5 pages was on our master list, then you could potentially touch 100 shelves with one book. Does that make sense? The tricky part of the game is that it gets harder as you go along, because you'll start touching the same shelves again, so fewer shelves count for each book.

The spreadsheet actually really helped me in understanding the game last time...so I'll email it to all four of you who requested it when I get home this evening!

message 58: by Roseann (new)

Roseann | 66 comments OK, I think I have it now. But hey, this is for fun, so if I mess up, who really cares ;-).

message 59: by Avigail (new)

Avigail (avigailr) Can you send me also the excell spreadsheet so I can take part in the next round, my mail is ababaigalit@gmail.com. I will practice for now. My question is if I have to read books one by one as the list show or we can read books from the list, but decide our order of reading?

Have a nice reading day and week
Avigail

message 60: by Avory (new)

Avory Faucette (avoryfaucette) Yeah, my experience was that the first book was 40+ but the second books signficantly fewer, and I think that will keep happening.

message 61: by Jen B (new)

Jen B (jennybee618) Avigail, I can send the spreadsheet to you when I get home this evening. You can read the books in any order you want -- that's the great thing about this challenge, since you don't have to read specific books in a specific order. The goal is just to touch as many shelves as you can with the books that you read. Some books touch considerably more shelves than others.

Judith, that is definitely my frustration with it - fewer shelves as you go along. By the time I got to about my 5th book last round, I was hitting only 1 or 2 shelves each time. Maybe that's just an indication that I need to read a bigger variety of books!

message 62: by Avigail (new)

Avigail (avigailr) Thank you Jen B I like this chalange I will be part on the next one as you started this one. But I will do it for myself so I can see how's it goes

message 63: by Duygu (new)

Duygu | 2 comments Hey its my first time here, hopefully I can figure this out :) please send me the excel sheet also to dbasman@hotmail.com thanks!

message 64: by Avigail (new)

Avigail (avigailr) thanks

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) Is there a place to record what you have done?

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) | 2895 comments Mod
So - Just curious. Without saying the name of the book,(Unless you want to) what is the most shelves touched by any single book that you have read?

Mine is 66, which seems like a lot to me. Most of them didn't count though cuz I had already counted them. But still 66 for one book seems like a lot.

Any others?

message 69: by Angela (new)

Angela I had one touch 51, but I only counted the ones that I did not count. It probably would have touched others that I already touched though...

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) | 2895 comments Mod
Wow Angela - so maybe 66 isn't that much anyway. Unfortunately, of the 66 shelves, only 24 were countable since I had already counted the rest. Bummer!

I was able to get 56 with one children's book. Clue--It's magically popular.

message 72: by Luann (new)

Luann (azbookgal) | 1017 comments Lyn, I think 66 is a lot! The highest number of shelves for any of the books I've read during both Shelf-a-Thons is 65. But not too many of the books I've read reach even close to 60 shelves. I did read one in the last Shelf-a-Thon that touched 64 shelves - but by the time I read it, I was only able to count one of them. :(

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) | 2895 comments Mod
Luann - That's what I was finding, too. That most of them didn't even come close. Of course I'm new at this, but my next largest was only 46. I wonder what makes the difference?

message 74: by Luann (new)

Luann (azbookgal) | 1017 comments I think it has to do with the complete freedom we have to call our shelves whatever we want. So the norm is shelves that are similar to others, but not always exactly matching. So it's hard to find books that many people have read and shelved with the exact same shelves.

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) I'm not sure if I'm doing this correctly since this is my first time but I am trying my best.

So let's see I read Chicken Noodle Soup for the Christian Woman's Soul and it hit 3 shelves. Do I need to list the shelves?

Sarah, do you have the tracking spreadsheet? If not, I can send it to you if you let me know your email address. All the shelves are listed on the spreadsheet, and you can check them off as you go (and it will count them for you).

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) No, I don't... can you send it to bluechick1887@live.com I am just really lost again!

message 78: by Luann (new)

Luann (azbookgal) | 1017 comments There is one shelf on our list called "paperpack" that I'm thinking must really be "paperback." I don't find any books shelved under "paperpack" and there are 2,016 shelved as "paperback."

message 79: by Slayermel (new)

Slayermel | 664 comments I think your right, I think it may be a typo.
Angela any thoughts?

message 80: by Angela (new)

Angela A typo...sorry! Did not even notice that. Thanks Luann.

message 81: by Angela (new)

Angela Fixed it.

Luann (azbookgal) | 1017 comments Wow, Sunflower. I'm not sure what happened, but it posted your message here 22 times. Was something stuck on your keyboard? Because there were a lot of empty lines in your message, too.

Thanks for posting that Luann, because I thought my computer was going nuts :o) *sigh of relief*

message 85: by Sunflower (new)

Sunflower | 174 comments wow , really sorry guys. Something weird happened while I was typing it, and I couldn't stop it. Embarrassed. Will retire to corner and hang head in shame.

Don't be embarrassed! It was your computer's fault. You could go in and delete the extra posts - and delete the extra spaces from the one you leave, if you want.

message 87: by Sunflower (new)

Sunflower | 174 comments Ok, I think I have got rid of the extra posts, but don't seem to be able to get rid of the vast space left now. Any more clues?

message 88: by Luann (new)

Luann (azbookgal) | 1017 comments I'm not sure, Sunflower. It just looks like your "enter" button got stuck and it made a bunch of empty spaces there. But if that's the case you should be able to delete them. If it won't let you delete them, I'm not sure what else can be done.

message 89: by Sera (new)

Sera I just joined the group and will wait until Round 3 to participate, but I would love to have the spreadsheet. Would someone be kind enough to email it to me at Paezle@aol.com?

Thank you so much.

I see that Roseann continues to outread everyone in her path in regard to this challenge, too :) Way to go!
