Katy (kathy_h) This is such a classic, I need to read it.

Heather (creaturefromthesea) | 36 comments Kathy, it's a fantastic short story; I guarantee you that you'll love it.

Kimberly Read | 156 comments I read this for a class back ... way back. I wasn't fond of the professor so I didn't really get into the books. I'm reading it again now.

carol. | 2616 comments I have it in an anthology, so I just read the preface last night that talked about Lovecraft's life. Really interesting--I thought he was a lot more successful than he was, and it hinted at a lot of sexual weirdness in his life like his dad dying of syphilis and his mom and Lovecraft having a 'love-hate' relationship. Now I'm piqued to find out more.

Poe was one of his most significant influences, at least for fiction/short stories. I don't think it's gore, more the building of ominous atmosphere.

I have to get to a couple of library books first, since they are on hold for other people.

Don't you hate that?

I wouldn't call it horror so much as suspense or thriller. If you can handle Poe, you'll easily handle Lovecraft.

message 11: by Jalilah (new)

Jalilah I've ordered it from the library!

Kimberly Read | 156 comments I don't think of this as horror at all. To me, it is more an introduction to conspiracy theory.

Ha! That is a very interesting and accurate way of describing the story!

carol. | 2616 comments If you don't wish to buy/borrow a copy, I did find it online:
http://www.dagonbytes.com/thelibrary/...

It is a short story, so not completely intolerable to read on-line.

It's in the public domain, so Internet Archive has it as epub, kindle, etc. as well.

carol. | 2616 comments Well, Carly, thanks for your fiendish link as i proceed to spend the rest of my night in the community library checking out books. Sleep is overrated.

I just found "Kaplan Anatomy Coloring Book." Trying to imagine that on ereader...

...oh no, now I'm going to look. And I'm supposed to be reading about streaming algorithms. You do know about Project Gutenberg, right? 100,000 or so ebooks, many with the old illustrations.
