I can't believe howuch I missed first time around - so much explained ex floating pieces of Shadow, Dragnipur and Chaos and gates, TCG, really so many pieces of a puzzle falling into place that I caught when not needing to be focused on the plots.

One thing I found fascinating is missed signals of language- Lady Envy had never encountered the gallows humor and took Pickler's statement as forthright, so tragic that she could have saved the whole squad.

I have always said this one was my fave....The first time through i was really confused about what Rake did with Moonspawn...why would he do that? This time around it was a lot clearer.

It's my favorite too. I just finished the book - so still absorbing things. One thing that really struck me was even though the focus was war, the individual characters diverse, they really shined through. And even amidst war, Erikson showed off their difference. I'm glad I'm reading along with you guys - the chapter write-up and discussion was very helpful especially for a first-time reader.

I didn't remember how Rake got there, so that was a nice mystery for me, because of course I knew that he did. Last time I was devastated when WJ died, this time I was in pursuit of how Rake would appear, the rising of Moon's Spawn was spectacular, and I had a little movie going on in my head, rising from the depths of the sea. I love books that take me away like that, 100% enthralled in my imagination that with fleeting visions of it during the day, like remembering a dream.

I re-read my review from my first read two years ago and whilst I still love this book and will be bumping four to five stars, I still have the same doubts as to the tactics of WJ and Dujek. I still cannot fathom why they tried to be so far ahead of the allies, in what was obviously a most likely suicide attack on an army with well trained soldiers, a huge amount of mages, air superiority and possible a nightmare army of K'Chain Che'Malle. Reading the second time through, still doesn't give me the answers that I hoped to see.

I am sure I have this wrong, because it doesn't make sense, but the way I have read it twice, is that they rushed in to see if they could take it by themselves, claim it and knowing there was a Malazan fleet off the coast could possibly convince Brood and Rake that they should leave them their prize. The only reason why they did this obviously stupid tactic was because it was ordered by Tayschrenn on Laseens command, who was completely unaware at the difficulty of the task.

On the upside, I loved the Picker/Blend storyline through this story, it has developed to be one of my favourite duo's.

I think the involvement of Tattersail/Silverfox and the T'lan Imass played a lot in their initial plans. They were counting on Tattersail's loyalty to Paran.

DId Silverfox ever commit the Imass to the party? Yeah, I think you are right, they probably expected the thousands of Imass to pop up and take on the K'chain Che'Malle. But even back when WJ and Dujek were splitting up, they both saw this as a probable suicide, at least for Dujek. One arm also hinted that Laseen knew what she was doing sending him on the suicide mission and not WJ as he would be needed later to join up with Tavore. Well....how that backfired eh?

That's a good point Lee. A lot of the decisions have been made at a macro level by Laseen. She probably considers the cost worth it - meanwhile the Bridgeburner and Onearm's host have to pay up in lives

I think what Rake did Moon-spawn his intentions were so that Tiste andii could get a better home and moon spawn was dying anyway, so my guess is that by crashing into coral he re birthed their place of living.

I wholly agree with you Lee, WJ and Dujek seem like remedial tacticians in their headlong dash to get to Coral. Why would they do that?

To be in position to occupy the city when things were done - even without Brood's blessing. Things didn't quite work out that way though.

Finished today. I really liked this one. Not as much as DG but still liked it a lot. I think my favorite scene was Moon's Spawn rising from the sea. And poor Whiskeyjack. Sad face all around.

Itkovian was pretty sad too I thought. We get to see what happens when a mortal embraces too much pain.
Next books picks up from DG so you'll probably enjoy that.

Yeah, Itkovian's death bummed me out too. I'm looking forward to House of Chains. I want to see what's going on with the Whirlwind and whatnot

The first time I read this I didn't understand why Rake did that to Moon's Spawn, but after a re-read I agree that he knew it was dying and that the Tiste Andii needed something drastic to move onward....lol

My favorite scene is always where Brukhalian rode his men into the trap set by Rath Trake, knowing it would be the catalyst to turn the tide of the politics...

Itkovian's death actually had me much more upset than Whiskeyjack for some reason. To see him take on that pain and then have all of the Imass recognize that significance was pretty profound.

To me, as in my third reading, was most painful the death of Bridgeburners, because it wasn't necessary..


And I have question, is there somewhere explanation of what is Garat? Dog who could be the hound of shadow??

Yeah, Silvefox said earlier Imass will destroy undead Kell hunters, but Itkovian ruined it, with good intention :(
