SOLVED: 1989-94 sci-fi/fantasy story about Earth & Mars having a bridge between them [s]

I read this book when I was in middle school, so 1989-1993 year range. How long the book was out before I read it, I have no idea.
From what I can remember:
Some astronauts go to Mars looking for the other astronauts who went missing and they find a cave or something that tells an ancient history. That ancient history is more fantasy like and involves something about Earth and Mars somehow being connected by some type of bridge or gateway.
I wish I could remember more about it, but 20+ years is a long time and I just can't, if anyone is able to figure this out - that would be awesome.
