i have done this before i have started reading a book then realize i wasn't into it and i didn't like it as sad as it is and no matter how much i hate to do this if i don't like the book i am reading i will simply stop reading take it back to the library and get another book that i will enjoy i hate doing that because i really want to be able to finish the book and i really want to like the book as well but i just can't seem to bring myself to finish a book that i don't like no matter how much i try

message 2: by Reaghan (new)

Reaghan | 52 comments I almost always force myself to read it, but it is often a poor choice!

message 3: by N (new)

N | 276 comments Good rule of thumb - if you are on a page that matches your age and you don't love it MOVE ON :) I used to force myself or skim, now I think nah. I try again another time - like In the Name of the Rose, I WILL read it someday....

message 4: by Dean (new)

Dean MacAllister (deanmacallister) Lifes too short. Three chapters of a book...or 30 mins of a movie and you did your best. It's time to see other novels.

message 5: by Purbita (new)

Purbita (Read-addict) | 50 comments Get bored
stop reading
start a better book..

message 6: by мєℓ (new)

мєℓ Sometimes the start is a bit slow. Some authors put up characters, places, story....
So I read 3-4 chapters. If nothing happened and I'm bored then I give up.

As Dean said: "Life's too short"

message 7: by Sheila (new)

Sheila | 21 comments I am one of those I hate to give up what I start, so most of the time I try my best to finish the book even though it is boring, rarely I would give it up.

message 8: by Susana (new)

Susana | 52 comments It depends. If I'm not into it and I have to read it for some book club or team I will do the sacrifice and go through with it (this is how i felt with "The Mockingbirds"). However, if its a book by my own account I will probably stop reading it or finish reading it for the sake of adding a book on goodreads lol :)

message 9: by Jackie (new)

Jackie I won't push on,rather put it aside and have another go at a later date. I hate to 'waste' a book so maybe 3 tries, then if it still isn't working it goes to the charity shop. This is assuming It is just nit getting me interested, if I find it distasteful in some way - it's gone!

Too many good books to waste time.

message 10: by Danyal (new)

Danyal Effendi (daneffendi) | 14 comments i try to read it to finish but its difficult. so they are put back on the shelf, partially read. :-)

message 11: by Elissa (new)

Elissa (elissareads) | 6 comments I usually put it back on my shelf, and maybe later I will read it, but most of the time I just go ahead and start a new book. There are so many books to read and so little time, so I don't waste my time on a book I do not enjoy.

I love your quote here!!!!!!^_^

message 13: by Mschell (new)

Mschell (authormschell) | 6 comments I really try to give it a chance, some books start off slow then it picks up, I'm one of those people that have to finish.

message 14: by Claire (new)

Claire | 27 comments It usually depends on why I don't like it. If it's major, like if I don't like the main concept or the protagonist is insufferable, I usually quit right away, but if it's the writing or something else that's easier to ignore, I usually try to skip to a part where I can, you know... ignore it. That said, I tend to quit a lot of books, especially recently. If it doesn't hold my interest, why should I read it? (As long as I didn't buy it... Then I sort of have to read it...)

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

Keep reading and hope that it gets better!

message 16: by Iz (new)

Iz Alcausin (izalcausin) | 28 comments If I really don't like it, I don't press myself to finish reading it hoping that it gets better. I'd just look for another book that is much better than the previous one. :)

message 17: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Raygoza (jenniferraygoza) I try to give it a chance but my mind will just start to wonder and then I give up after a few tries.

message 18: by Sam (new)

Sam (sam222) I don't like quitting books that I start so I usually just slug through it and that's what I'm doing currently with my book The Midnight Tour by Richard Laymon. I have a book that I never finished in 2012 that I'm going to finish one day.

message 19: by emma (new)

emma (8765443289) I try really hard to plod through at least 1/4 of the book, but if it isn't good by then, I read the last few pages to see what happens and generally don't pick it up again.

message 20: by Chai (new)

Chai Smith (perfectlyunperfect) | 12 comments I generally check out several books at a time. so if I don't like a book I will pick up another and come back to the one that I didnt like on a different date.

message 21: by Meag (new)

Meag (meagan01) I'll read the out, not with much enthusiasm and over a long period of time sometimes forgetting about them. If i'm lucky they get interesting coming close to the end,

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

Put it aside for a while then come back to it hoping it'll get better.

message 23: by Karen (new)

Karen L (1karen1) | 18 comments I can usually force myself into the story long enough to finish it. Very rarely can I not complete the task. Afterwards I forget about it.

message 24: by Stacy (new)

Stacy okun (stacyo40) | 111 comments i CANNOT put it down, i struggle through it, and ever the optimist, i wait till it gets better LOl

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

I usually just place the book aside and then read it again and hope that it get's better. I rarely do this but only if the books get really boring or too slow to read. Sometimes I'm just not in the mood, so I get to fit in just the right mood and then read it again.

message 26: by Guluna (new)

Guluna (toastedbagels) It depends, how much boring a book can be..
I normally complete them :)

message 27: by Laura (new)

Laura | 168 comments If i get past the first chapter I continue reading but if it is really bad I put it down

message 28: by Iris (new)

Iris | 27 comments I finish almost all books I read, unless they're truly disastrous or bore me to tears. Maybe it's time I talked to my shrink about being a glutton for punishment.

message 29: by [deleted user] (new)

If the first few chapters aren't good I stop reading it unless its a book from a series I think is good.

message 30: by Tom (new)

Tom Krug (thomas_krug) | 22 comments I force myself to read most books, even if they're sub-par. Especially if I've spent money on them. But if the book is excruciating, I'll just naturally put it down after a hundred pages or so.

message 31: by princesz (new)

princesz (goodreadscomjjc) | 2 comments i just stopped reading it and put a bookmark so whenever i'm bored i'll force myself to read it

message 32: by Santino (new)

Santino (tinoprinzi) I just finish it! You can't judge a book by its cover, so why would you judge one until you have read it in its entirety? I've read some books that were boring or awful until a certain event occurred, which is its ending sometimes, that actually made me hold a completely different opinion say 50 pages or 20 pages ago.

message 33: by Laura (new)

Laura | 168 comments I must admit it takes alot for me to put a book down I can only recall doing it once

message 34: by Kat (new)

Kat (itskatco) I still give it a chance. But if I can't take anymore, I put it down.

message 35: by Ahmya (last edited Apr 27, 2013 02:28AM) (new)

Ahmya (ahmyasan) hehe .... it happens sometimes not always, therefore when it happens either i stop reading altogether or i read the last chapter to find how the book actually finished. but that's sometimes too. If the book is too boring i completely ignore it until i don't have have any choice to either read the last chapter or give it back.
I still have months old ebooks i am 'TRYING' to finish :D

message 36: by Robert (new)

Robert Spake (ManofYesterday) | 61 comments I do feel somewhat guilty but I realised that if you don't enjoy something there's no need to continue with it. If I'm that curious I'll just look up on the internet what happened in the end.

message 37: by Jason (new)

Jason Purdy | 32 comments I just stop. Once I get to the point where I start to doubt the book, I give it another ten pages or so. If it doesn't change my mind, I stop. There's no point forcing your way through something if you're not interested in the characters or the story. I'd apply the same to anything, music, films, video games. If I don't like it, I don't force it.

message 38: by Kitty (new)

Kitty O'Day | 6 comments I used to read on regardless, but now I realise life is too short and if I really find it a chore to pick the book back up again I don't. I move onto something else. Is that bad of me?
I might go back to it if I am in different mood, as that effects if I like a story.

I don't think it's a bad thing. I'd agree, reading is supposed to be enjoyable, if it feels like a chore to work through something then there's not much point in sticking with it. Sometimes I would read on, even if I'm not fully enjoying it.

But sometimes there's a book that you just outright disagree with (or is just plain awful) and there's no point being a sadist and carrying on with it.

message 40: by Sydney (new)

Sydney Mugerwa (corrosivemind) Growing up, books were hard to come by so I grew up with the habit of reading something once I started on it. These days though I an learning to let go if the book doesn't make me happy

message 41: by Joanne Farley (new)

Joanne Farley I use to finish a book no matter what, these days if I'm not enjoying it I move on to the next book.

message 42: by Xxcreativebunnyxx (last edited Apr 27, 2013 04:16AM) (new)

Xxcreativebunnyxx | 24 comments I just skim the pages

message 43: by мєℓ (new)

мєℓ Elissa wrote:I love your quote here!!!!!!^_^ "

True story :) It's happened to me once. Reading a book, I was surprised to jump paragraphs.

Me: "Blablabla" *jumping 2 paragraphs "Ha, actions finally!" *Reading* "Ah no"

When something like that happened, then it's time to choose another book!

message 44: by Ashley (new)

Ashley I just usually move on but if its a book other people really enjoyed I'll read more of it to see if the ending is better than the beginning

message 45: by kierra (new)

kierra (karmania) I used to finish the book no matter what. Now if I don't like I just skip few chapters or go the very end to know how it ended.

message 46: by [deleted user] (new)

If I don't like a book I try to push through it and continue, hoping it picks up and gets better but if it doesn't I just have to stop. I don't like forcing myself to continue something to the end when I'm just going to think that was a waste of time and I could've spent that reading another book I would enjoy so much more.

message 47: by Megan (new)

Megan | 29 comments It's pretty rare for me to not finish a book, even if I'm not particularly liking it. But I will stop reading if I absolutely hate it. With that being said, I generally screen my books before I invest my time. I check out average ratings, reviews (particularly why certain people didn't like the book; I find that more telling than the positive reviews), and download samples to my kindle.

message 48: by Klancy (new)

Klancy Hoover-Davis Even if I don't like a book I finish it. I don't like not knowing what happens...And if my friends ask me about it, I can give them reasons for why I didn't like it

message 49: by Leilani (new)

Leilani | 19 comments If i don't like the book and it's too boring for me, i'll just stop reading right then and there. I know i wouldn't be able to finish it

message 50: by Jane(Pixie) (new)

Jane(Pixie) (janepixie_mitzkewich) | 6 comments HI, This just happened to me. First. Tere are too many books out there. This one had little character development or description. I read to experience good writing. The book club slammed it. I voiced my agreement and moved on.I mean, I try to give books a chance, usually/ posting from Guam
