I noticed a lot of people have it on both horror & comedy shelves so I'm not surprised by that.

Susan (Suz) (sharney) Alright with that description Elvia I'm going to have to check it out ;)

Elvia (elvb) LOL....yeah I need to make a humor shelf for this one and the Chris Moore novels I've read. Martinez fits right in with Moore.
Shanon, have you also noticed that "Gil's" has been labeled YA or at least in the Best YA lists? I'm tellin' ya...I'm not sure I'd be comfortable with my child reading that until she's at least 18! lol

I hadn't noticed the YA lists. From what I understand it is NOT a YA novel! yikes!

Tiffany | 22 comments I can't wait to start Gil's. I have it on order from Amazon along with a Gecko book and they're supposed to be coming on the 9th.

Tiffany | 22 comments I'm on This Witch for Hire, which is a 2 in 1 of the first 2 Kim Harrison books. I am also on The Mage's Daughter by Lynn Kurland. Both are really good. I just started Mage's daughter this morning and I'm already halfway through it. Working conventions lets me catch up on my reading. :)

I haven't heard of Hannah before. I'm curious to see what you think of it.

Storm Born is GREAT! You've started reading it at just the right time to pick up Thorn Queen (#2) without any wait.

The day we got it in I was drawn to the cover. We actually got a lot of good-looking teen books in that day but I figured I could read this one pretty quickly. So far, I really like it a lot. It's historical fantasy with mermaids, what's not to like? ; ) The characters are really well-developed and the author has a good grip on imagery - makes for a very easy and intriguing read.

"Storm Born is GREAT! You've started reading it at just the right time to pick up Thorn Queen (#2) without any wait."

I'm absolutely loving Storm Born, it's fantastic. I keep waiting for something absolutely horrible to happen though, at least that's what I've come to expect from Mead ... I don't know if I'm going to start Thorn Queen after finishing it though. I've got a bunch of books listed for challenges that I should work on. I need to read Succubus Heat too so I'll more than likely start that next.

I've pretty much given up on reading most of my New Releases for now. I'm so behind on all of the books I've been waiting for. Too many books are catching my eye and I've had less time to read lately. Let's see... I've got Succubus Heat, Destined for An Early Grave, My Soul to Take, Dream Fever & Blood Promise all sitting here staring at me and begging for attention. ARG!

Oh man, don't even get me started! I have over 800 books that I actually own that I haven't read yet. Pretty ridiculous, huh? I've slowed down on buying new releases a lot though so at least my pile isn't growing at such an exponential rate anymore. I read 12 books last month so I'm working on it bit by bit.

message 262: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (theholyterror) | 132 comments Man, Storm Born was really really good! I ♥ Richelle Mead's books so much! Hannah was good until the last two chapters. If it had ended differently I could have easily given it 4 stars.

Now I'm reading both Stray (Shifters, #1) by Rachel Vincent and Moon Called (Mercedes Thompson, #1) by Patricia Briggs . I didn't realize that Stray was over 600 pages! It seems though that they spaced the lines apart more than normal and also increased the margin sizes. Weird. And I'm glad to finally start Moon Called, it seems like everyone but me has read this series!

The Mercy series is another great series. You've been reading some really good books lately!

I haven't read Stray yet but from the chatter it gets I'm sure it's good. I've got it to read sometime too... eventually... hopefully :)

Shannon (theholyterror) | 132 comments Shanon wrote: "The Mercy series is another great series. You've been reading some really good books lately!"

I've been trying to cram in as much reading as possible before school starts. I'm also participating in a couple of challenges and a few group reads that are forcing me to read the books that have been on my backlog for a while now. Here's a list of all the challenges I joined. Stray is a mini-read for the Who's Your Author group so I'm trying to read it this month.

When school starts I know I'm going to slow down on my reading tremendously (well, my reading of books I want to read, lol) and it makes me kind of depressed. : (

I used to do the month-to-month challenges too. I found myself too stressed and had to stop. Something about me forces me to complete everything on a To Do list and those challenges were To Do lists for me. I'm a freak but I'm ok with it...

I'm doing a challenge right now that runs from August through November. Not feeling too stressed but then it's not the end of the challenge yet so we'll wait until crunch time to see if I feel the stress :)

One of my favorite things about graduating was knowing I could read books I enjoyed again! I feel for all the students out there who want to read a good book but are stuck with text books and other research/projects/homework. I'm just glad it's not me anymore!

I really hope you enjoy both of these books. Patricia Briggs is one of my new favorites!! And Stray was good - except Rachel Vincent tends to describe...a lot. Other than that it was a good book. And fast if you can believe it.

I haveRogue at home now but I'm getting thru Uglies, and a Patricia Briggs weekend first - On the Prowl, Cry Wolf, and Bone Crossed - before I start it.

So sad! My ereader is busted and my replacement won't be here for 4 days :( That means I have to wait to finish The Hob's Bargain & The Living Dead. In the meantime I'll be reading Salem's Lot.

I'm right there with you. I can't keep up with all the challenges. I decided to continue reducing the number of books in my to-be-read pile. Besides buying extra books gets expensive and I often have no interest in reading them.

I finished Neverwhere A Novel by Neil Gaiman and Hunting Ground by Patrician Briggs. I think I'm going to start on Summer Knight by Jim Butcher.

Oh Yeah! That's up next for me so I'm glad to hear it's good.

I'm reading Grave Peril (#3 in the Dresden Files) and feel like I missed something. There's a new character, Michael, that is just in the story without much introduction. I looked to see if there's an anthology in between the 2 books but couldn't see one. Does anyone know if there's any short stories by Jim Butcher that I should be reading along the way? I HATE missing pieces of the story because they're in other books!

message 274: by Elvia (new)

Elvia (elvb) There aren't any shorts about Michael. I've searched Jim Butcher's website. What you see is what you get with Michael :). But you grow to understand him and his ways/beliefs.

message 275: by Paula (last edited Sep 09, 2009 07:34AM) (new)

Paula (pauldajo) Grave Peril was a bit upsetting to me. I liked the book, but what happened to one of the characters I liked was irritating. Maybe it will resolve itself later on.

Elvia, I'm glad that Summer Knight is going to be a good one. This is one of the series I read that is like comfort food.

Michael did burst in on the scene. Butcher does that with his characters. Michael is a true believer and he's actions demonstrate the power of true belief. We will find out more about him. It's his multitude of children that I want to get to know. I'm from a family of 6 kids and I know that the more sibling = higher possiblity for oneriness!

message 276: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 66 comments As others have said, don't worry about not really 'getting' Michael at first. There's plenty enough info added as it becomes important that he will eventually become a favorite. I think its one of thos things Butcher excells at. He can give you fantastic characters without giving you huge walls of text all at once to make sure you understand them. He feeds you the information in bits and pieces through thoughts, conversations and actions.

message 277: by Elvia (new)

Elvia (elvb) That is one of the reasons Butcher's Dresden Files is my favorite series!
Paula, I'm trying to remember Grave Peril and even the synopsis doesn't bring it back to me...I guess I'll have to read it again.

Jennifer (jnhart) I just finished Blade of Fortriu (Book 2 in THe Chronicles of Bridei). It was fantastic. Can't wait to read some more of Juliet Marillier's work, especially the next book in the series - Well of Shades.

Right now I'm reading Rogue by Rachel Vincent, Fool Moon by Jim Butcher, and Holy Smokes by Katie MacAlister.

I finally got Well of Shades today!!!! And another one called Wolfskin by Juliet Marillier. Can't wait to read them both.

I started The Dark Mirror yesterday after learning about the series here! Thanks for everyone that brought it up - I'm really enjoying it.

I'm also going to finish Pretty When She Dies A Vampire Novel. I am LOVING this book! It's the first book I've read by Rhiannon Frater and I'll definately be hunting down the rest of her books soon.

Paula (pauldajo) I finished Death Masks by Jim Butcher and started Blood Rites book six of the Dresden Files. Also started Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins.

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) Finally picked up Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder.

I discovered on the author's website some free short stories. Two of the stories available (synopsis below) relate to her Study trilogy. For those of you who liked the trilogy and couldn't get enough...

http://www.mariavsnyder.com/shortstor...

POWER STUDY is about Ari and Janco as they deal with a Sandseed Magician and a cocky young soldier.

ASSASSIN STUDY is an online serial story about the trouble Valek is involved in while Yelena is in Sitia.

Off to start Magic Study tomorrow.

Lady Heather (_ladyheather_) I'm reading Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunter series. I have raced through the first two...couldn't put them down..I am currently reading Night Embrace. I started reading Ms. Kenyon's work because frankly I was tired of reading my daughter's YA material...I wanted more of a story with a little more passion and WOW does Ms. Kenyon deliver!!!!
If you want more pick up her books!
