I'd like to propose a slightly different reading order than the numbers of the books...

I'd suggest that when/IF you're getting freaked out in book 5, start and read it *with* book 5. It will make help you make sense of what's happening to Perry. It will especially help you make sense of the end of book 5.

THEN read , which are a compilation of scenes from the first 5 books from Dex's POV.

THEN read before you read . It's Dex's POV of the between book 4 and into book 5. I know that's not the numbered order, but you'll thank me. You can't read "And With Madness..." before, though, even though it seems like you should be able to. You'll need "Old Blood" and "The Dex-Files" to prep you for it.

But you have to read them BEFORE you start into "Into The Hollow"...

OK, IF you're read Old Blood, here's my question:
(view spoiler)[Max's last name is Jacobs... one of my suppositions/wonderings is if Max was supposed to be Dex's guide, but he got too involved with the whole Abby situation. And then, perhaps, Max was supposed to help Perry, starting with "Red Fox", but when again Max got too involved. So instead of helping Perry, he ended up hurting her; partly because Max is still trying to get back at Dex for Abby and for his girlfriend.

Well, (view spoiler)[you read Dex Files, right? Becase in that when he first met Dex he said his name was Jacob. Then backtracked and said "Jacobs, Maximillion Jacobs". And seeing as allll guides are named Jacob, it really made me stop and raise a brow. Perry's 'Jacob' from the accident when she was a teen had black hair. But Pippa's Jakob was also a redhead. Perhaps Max is a Jacob too, is it a coincedence that he also has red hair? And also, here's another stumper, Guides shouldn't be seen by anyone without the gift, but everyone can see Max. So how is he swinging that? BUT, it would make sense as to why his style hasn't changed ever, he's still rocking the Elvis do even after all these years. Plus, Dex said, after Max got him out of jail, that maybe Max was there to help him in a strange way. It definitely is leading us to believe that Max is part of the guides some how. But HOW is the question. Also, he's supposed to help Dex, but he doesn't like him at all (hide spoiler)]. It's a mind-bender for sure.

EXACTLY!!!! (view spoiler)[The thing is that the "Jacobs" have lived - been real people. So, I keep wondering if Max is a new kind of Jacob - one who's still alive? I know, that sounds silly, but his "gift" of being able to know how people felt when they died seems like another piece of the puzzle.

Yeah, that everyone can see him... I started wondering, after reading your reviews and Leea's reviews of the series IF that's why Max was such a brown nose with Perry's parents. If he was supposed to help Perry (or Dex), but Max wanted to stay on the good side of her parents, he'd have to pretend to be like them, right? And after Pippa's story, you know how they feel about ghosts and all that stuff.... especially her mom.

Which, BTW, makes me even madder at Perry's mom. UGH! I never liked the woman, but she's horrible!

I'm SO GLAD someone else is reading this series! I've had a bunch of stuff bubbling up and no one to talk to about it. (hide spoiler)]

I highly recommend that you read Dex's next story BEFORE or WITH . IMO, it was good to have Dex's POV between The Dex Files, Lying Season, and On Demon Wings before going into the next real Dex-Perry book. It helped me get through some of the tough parts in Into The Hollow.

He got too close and he's starting to creep me out a little. He's too close to Perry's family and it's odd. I wonder if in the Hollow we'll get more about Pippa and she may have some info on Max.

Pippa's story broke my heart and I love her for what she did for Dex and MIchael (wonder what happend to him? will he come in to The story at some point?)

BTW, is it Pippa's bad memory or did Halle make a mistake? Pippa has Dex at about 13 when Perry's mom & dad get married. But Dex is only 10 years older than Perry, so I'd think that he would have only been 9 when Perry's mom & dad got married... then 10 by the time Perry was born.

It wasn't even the locking her up, though that was bad, it was the cold scary way that she treated Pippa before they moved to America and the things she said. She's evil, lmao. I'm on the fence about Max (view spoiler)[being a new kind of Guide. See, I think he died back in the day which is why he still dresses the same. It's not that I don't think people still dress Rock-a-billy, cause they do. It's because the way he dresses is brought up to often. She doesn't want you to forget that his style hasn't changed in over 10 years. So, my thinking is that he was a guide at some point, just like Jakob, but perhaps the Guide rules are changing? Somehow he got a corporeal body back? I don't know... I'm definitely thinking something's up. I think he's trying to keep the peace with the parents and help Perry, and even Dex despite the fact that they don't like each other. It's like, Jakob's advice to Pippa was probably what she should have done but it wasn't what Pippa wanted to do. Maybe Max sees more pain for them and he's trying to keep them apart? Trying to undo what Pippa's done? (hide spoiler)]

On another note, (view spoiler)[Pippa's story was SOOO friggin sad! My heart was just so broken for her in the end. Even now I think about her randomly, like when I'm running errands, and I'm so sad that she got so gypped by everyone in the end. Fuck Ludie! Fuck her daughter! I wish she had gotten back to Karl and was still alive. BUT, I really liked Jakob a LOT. I would love to see him pop back up again (hide spoiler)].

I think I stand alone when I read it, because (view spoiler)[I was just really sad. I could tell right away that Dex was wigging out emotionally because he realized how in love he was and he thought Perry didn't love him back so he was trying to throw up a wall to protect himself. (Yes, you do find out more about Dex over the next book and shorts that will shed light on where his head was.) And I was so sad that all of that happened because they just kept lying to each other over and over- why it was called Lying Season, I guess, lmao. He should have admitted how he felt about her, and she should have admitted how she felt about him too. When he asked her if she was in love with him, she should have said yes. And I'll say that Dex was more honest about his feelings than Perry was. He told her many times how beautiufl and amazing she was. He said 'You are my light through all this madness, I should just be with you'. That, in my opinion, is an admission of the depth of his feelings for her right there. But at the same time, it was obvious that Perry was in love with him too, and he should have seen it. They were both blind and they were both liars, and that caused me to just feel both of their pain at the end of Lying Season and my heart was broken for both of them. They shattered each other because both of them continued to make the wrong choices (hide spoiler)].

But I have yet to read a review that saw it that way, so I think it's another situation where my opinion was completely different. I'm an odd duck, lol.

I can see where you're coming from and I see that Dex (view spoiler)[was an emotional mess and puts up walls to protect himself. And I do hope later I will see where he's coming from. I just think that if he really cared about Perry, he should not have freaking pulled her along with the "you're beautiful", "you're amazing" while staying with Jen and not kicking her to the curb. The words and actions seemed so conflicting to me and I can see why Perry lied about not loving him b/c she was probably protecting herself from these conflicts. Argh! These two are just a hot mess. I mean, it's easier to stay in a fucked up relationship then it is to end it and strike off into the unknown. I'm not arguing that Dex doesn't act like a douche, lmao. he totally does. I just think that there are lots of times where Perry was acting like a douche too. Changing his meds was over the line for me. She has no idea what she may have done to him. They contine to bust each other apart emotionally, and it's busting ME apart emotionally! We need some HAPPY times, damn it!

Wendy, I *do* agree with you about Lying Season. Now you can all see why I love and hate this book, right? I think, the first read through,I was so angry at the situations in the book that I didn't process completely. But I agree with your assessment - all the lying just shredded everything. You see the fall-out in the next book - BIG TIME! And (Must have read Lying Season and On Demon Wings)(view spoiler)[ I was really afraid that it would just be the end for them. I didn't know how they were going to be put back together as Perry & Dex after Lying Season and 75% of On Demon Wings. (hide spoiler)]

I can understand both POVs, but... what a lesson, huh?

Perry (Must have read at least up to Old Blood) (view spoiler)[and the meds - ugh! I was screaming at her over that! She is too compulsive sometimes. She acts without a lot of thought. YES, she knows that Dex liked "feeling", but she had no idea what she could have done to him - his body and his mind - by just blindly substituting sugar pills for 1/2 his meds!

And I get her frustration with Dex. He *was* still with Jenn. But see, I think he was still with Jenn *because* she didn't make him really feel. Because he could try to live a "normal" life with her. It fits with his upbringing, too - he had the outer stuff: a hot, sexy girlfriend, a great place, and even a dog. But Perry makes him FEEL. And Perry sees ghosts, too.

Perry is all the madness that he's been trying to avoid. And with Abby showing up... Well, I still think that the interrupted ritual in "Red Fox" was why Abby was able to do what she did.

Wendy, I think you're likely right with your Max thinking. It very well could be that his "mission" is to separate Dex and Perry because *Someone* decided it would be best for all - especially if that Someone knew what would happen if Perry & Dex did get together. But, as in Pippa's case, who's to say? (hide spoiler)]

Dex gave Perry plenty of "signs", it's just that she's got such a low opinion of herself and she's tried for so long to hide her feelings for him... she's so passive-agressive with him. That poor guy didn't have a chance. It's almost like this HAD to happen to give them a clean slate.

Pippa's story (Must have read at least through Old Blood) (view spoiler)[broke my heart, too. In so many ways... Poor Karl, I really do feel for him. He seems like such a great guy. I do wish that Pippa would have returned to him; but Perry's mom saw to it that she didn't.

I think that Perry's mom is supposed to be selfish and self-centered, like her real dad. But there's more to it than that. All the hateful things she said to Pippa over the years, even when she was young. She never seemed to love or to be grateful to Pippa, ever. It's hard to say what she felt for her "dad", Karl, because I don't recall much about that. Both Karl and Pippa spoiled her, but her behavior is much deeper than just a spoiled brat.

Dex's family - didn't that break your heart, too? I can see why his dad wouldn't be able to put up with all of that... the situation that Pippa walked into during the job interview - yikes! And how awful Dex's mom was; is the idea that she drank to avoid seeing ghosts, too? I was never quite sure.

Dex's dad... I don't understand why he never loved him really. I realize that Dex seemed to be "trouble", compared to Michael. Was it just that Dex looked so much like his mom, that his dad just couldn't take it? Thank goodness for Pippa! At least Dex had some love and affection growing up - someone who acknowledged him and praised him.

I think what's really sad, to me, about Pippa's story is that now she's just the Creepy Clown Lady. I wonder why her ghost would be that way? (hide spoiler)]

Max... (Must have read at least Old Blood and preferably through The Dex Files, JIC) (view spoiler)[Wendy, you keep picking up on his Rockabilly thing, and I guess I just keep passing over it. But now that it's finally sunk in, I see where you're going with this. I always figured Max was still alive, but it's possible he's not.

The Jakob/Jacob thing - I just don't understand WHO is supposed to be deciding what's best for these people. I can see how Pippa's Jakob was trying to do his best for her; but by telling her what he did, he knew that Pippa would do her own thing, anyway.

Perry's Jacob in high school seemed to try to warn her, but he wasn't very informative. Which is why it took me so long to "get" why everyone was so freaked out about her friendship with him. And why the psychiatrist kept asking about him. But then *lightbulb*! Sometimes I can be so dull - LOL! I can solve a mystery within the first few chapters, but I can miss something that obvious! I knew something wasn't right, but still...

That's the way I feel about Max. Something's not right there. But Sarah and whatshisname were able to change into Max in Red Fox. So that's gotta say the guy's still got a body. And the way that he interacts with others, especially Perry's parents. What a hoot it would be if Max was a Jacob, huh? Wouldn't that just be a slam in Perry's mom's face?

I guess I keep wondering of what use are the Jacobs if they can't seem to really help? It seems as if any interference from them just brings heartache. Either because they tell too much (Pippa's Jakob) or not enough (Perry's Jacob); or because like Pippa's Jakob and Max, they try too hard to push their own agenda on the person they're supposed to guiding.

Regardless, Max seems to always think he knows best. But as far as I can see, he's screwed up, too. In his mind, at least, he says "no" to Abby because he has a girlfriend. So Abby goes to Dex, and Dex gets obsessed (another reason why I think that Dex doesn't want to feel, especially not love - he went overboard with Abby and drove her to her own madness). Abby ends up crashing into a tree, drunk, and dying. So why isn't Max to blame, too? His girlfriend was Abby's best friend, so Max had opportunity to help. But did he "help" by trying to keep Abby from Dex? Is that why Abby tried so hard to get free of Dex? There's so much more here, still, than we really know. (hide spoiler)]

That's why I'm a little scared about Max being involved in the next book. More after you've finished Into The Hollow...

At first he was terrified of allowing Perry in because she is all the madness he's hiding from. Then when he was ready he freaked because he thougth that she didn't feel as deeply as him, and that there would be no cushion when he fell (hide spoiler)]. At least, that's how I saw the whole thing.

When she was a little girl and telling Pippa that she should be locked up... I got chills down my spine... she was like a demon child

I definitely thought she used the alcohol to hide fromt he ghosts, similar to how Dex used the pills. She coudln't handle it. I dont' think Dex is naturally as strong as Perry is. She got that from Pippa, but I think Perry MAKES Dex strong...I think Dex's dad didn't like him because he was a troublemaker. His dad didn't like anything that didn't appear a certain way. he was all about image. (hide spoiler)]!

Max, again Kay, don't read, lmao (view spoiler)[Perhaps Max is a guide gone rogue? Maybe he went to the side of the demons and his job is to try to break Perry and Dex. Help steal their power or whatever it is the Demons wanted. See I never saw Pippa's Jakob as screwing things up. If Pippa had listened to him she would have been fine. If she had NOT had the baby she wouldn't have had most of the heartache she did, and if she had stayed with Karl instead of coming to America she would also have been spared. Now we know that would have altered the futures of Perry and Dex, but in terms of keeping Pippa safe, he would have succeeded. It was PIPPA who screwed herself (hide spoiler)]

I finished! And (view spoiler)[I wanted to kill her! I was so angry! She did exactly what he did to her, except he TOLD her he loved her. He said he was ripping out his heart and putting it in her hands! She threw it back at him. At least when he pushed her away and threw up walls after sex he thought she didn't love him! BUT.... it worked out in the end and it was so beautful. I loved that she realized that she'd also made mistakes, that she'd had a hand in how things went down in Lying Season. I was so glad, because I was really struggling with how long she was continuing to be mean to him. He said it right when he said that she was purposely hurting him over and over, when his at least wasn't intentional. Then when she went to him and told him that he'd always been hers... It was so beautiful. I'm repeating myself, lmao. I loved it.

Lori, there was one point in the book, the morning after Perry drunkenly tried to seduce Dex and he didn't let her because he knew she'd regret it in the morning. First of all, not many men would have stopped her. Another moment where he really showed her how much she means to him. Then for her to wake up and meanly ask him if it felt good to shut her down... all I could think about was how you said she was so passive aggressive toward him. It was a great example (hide spoiler)].

That book was amazing. 5 stars.
