Snibril | 9 comments I learnt chess from a book that used the chess pieces as characters, and then gradually taught the rules of chess by having I think the White bishop explaining them to the White king. He defeated the Black king a few times with some simple mates, and then had to learn more complex openings to counter the Black king's increasing skill. I believe it had a blue cover. It is NOT "Chess for Children" by Raymond Bott and Stanley Morrison.

Angharad | 98 comments Is it possibly Kids' Book of Chess and Chess Set? It seems to use a lot of character-driven teaching and a previous cover illustration had a decent amount of blue.

Snibril | 9 comments Doesn't look like it - it was written like a story in which the pieces were characters. So the White and Black armies were always fighting, although I think it was a pretty 'friendly' war - captured pieces were returned at the end of each battle, etc. so it was more a matter of pride as to who won each time.

Joseph (bluemanticore) | 433 comments This is probably a long shot, but is it perhaps Checkmate At Chess City by Piers Harper?

Snibril | 9 comments Don't think so, sorry!

Snibril | 9 comments Similar idea, but I read the book in the early 90's, so can't be this one. It also didn't involve external characters, just the chess pieces as opposing armies + kings.

bookel | 4029 comments Starting chess
by Harriet Castor?

Go through books on worldcat.org advanced search. Chess is likely to be in the title. Limit to juvenile book English. Most likely non-fiction. Use year range especially if new book good way to restrict results.
Check covers Google images or other sites eg. abe.com ebay.com.
