NBRC: Tower Teams Read 2013, Round II discussion

Captains' Chat
I added the date and post number in the top left box of our June book list and June Hobbit Game pages so that we know which books have been recorded when going through our thread. You can update this when more books are added to the list. I added my last two books read and it looks like Tea? might have added a couple from earlier today. I am leaving assigning them to a category to you, Jojiwoji.
Yep, it was me*blushes*
I have to check: Who is tracking what?
Is Jojiwoji doing both 7% and Hobbit game? Or only 7% or Hobbit game? Are we all going to do updating when needed?
I got lost with all the planning :D
Had a poke through the other colours' threads to add more paint to our spreadsheet. Should be able to do this about once every two days, and double check against personal challenges about once a week.
For use of 'blinkies' can't we use books read any time this year? Correct me but that's the impression I got... If so then there's no need.

You're right. Blinkie can be used for books we read (at least those who got blinkies) this year. But also I think it can be used for shorter books (or it is still under discussion ☺)
And I sent Ezi PM about her book :D
I'm not sure, but I don't think its necessary either way. We can simply browse through their bookshelf of books read this year.
I don't think we need to track them. We can use them with the "blinkie" cupcake if it fits the category otherwise, but like Jojiwoji said, we can simply browse through their bookshelf for them.
"Blinkies" may be used for books less than 160 pages, since the first of the year, and on any Teammate's shelf that answered the puzzle correctly.
I hear I have been seen on some Milk cartons as Missing? :) All is well, just have been extremely busy with extracurricular activities. I haven't started a new book yet. :( BUT I am leaving for vacation on Sunday and plan on starting a new book..I'm just torn between "Wild" and "Midnight Children"...
I would lean toward "Wild", Dee. I have heard that it is good and it is on my TBR list as well. I read your other book several years ago and got through it but was very confused at times. It was harder to read and is something I think I would not want to start on a vacation. Also, in "Wild", the author is going on a 'vacation' by herself away from her family. Interesting that it is the opposite of what you will be doing.
Has anyone thought about what kind of challenge we want to do in August? Do we want to reuse one that we have already done, such as books with blue covers or the page count one in June? Or do we want to come up with a completely new one? In the captain's group thread a couple of teams have posted what they want to do already.
Someone already used scavenger hunt idea, so I don't know what to do. I'm temporarily out of ideas :(
We have now finished every category except #2, (colour ahead) and repeat of #5 (Spell Out). I have not finalised anything yet, because if a book is read which does not fit into one of these categories, or if we get a different colour at the next update, I will have to do some reshuffling. For this same reason, I think we should continue recording all possible categories until everything has been finalised.

You should post in main thread what we are missing, so everyone can go for search.
As for waiting another color, that's two more weeks. We'll be done by then ☺
Maybe we could go another round?! ☺
I have a couple of pink books but I haven't read them yet because I didn't think we were in a hurry to finish. We are supposed to have until the middle of July. We could probably get through the whole round at least twice in our time frame.

I am halfway through one pink book and I have two other books that are due at the library soon, but I will try to squeeze in another pink book by this weekend. (For me that means Sun/Mon)
I want those "bouncing" cupcakes! Several of my books are over 450 pages. Can't wait to try the new puzzles. Several of the other team members are too.

Maybe I'll finally read Game of Thrones ☺

Looking at the spreadsheet, I seem to be significantly ahead of schedule, and was thinking to raise my goal to 150. (From current goal 125).My goodreads challenge for the year is also set to 150, and I think that this will be much more realistic.
I will PM the mods (unless LK signals that she's seen this post and changes numbers without me making a formal announcement). Just wanted to give you the heads up before our numbers go and get messed up.

That's fine, Jo.
I'm thinking we ought to lower Gemma's goal to three or five. With a newborn, I doubt she comes back before we are done in October/November.

The mods are thinking about maybe giving out cupcakes for completing a category again after the team completes the original challenge. *Fingers crossed* We could potentially be done after this weekend and we would still have 4 weeks left to do it all over again.
I have a cupcake page on the spreadsheet to keep track of which puzzles have been completed and by whom. The top left corner shows what post it has been updated through. I have checked it with Captain Cupcake's and our records match his right now.

In case we do it again?
Does the team want to keep going? I haven't seen a decision on whether there will be more cupcakes given out. I think we could post our categories this weekend doubling up on category 7, then use the pink covers during the second attempt to complete it? Thoughts on this?
That's when being able to stay with the first color comes in handy. I'm on my phone eating lunch right now. Had to get out of the house to concentrate on getting some reading done. Do you want to post in the team thread and see what they think about skipping the pink covers for this round and trying for a second round?I'll be home again in about an hour to do the Sunday Update.

In case you missed it, Karen hasn't posted anything since her exams, because she got sick. She'll be back when she's feeling better.
LOL! Sometimes we even have utensils but today i am eating with my fingers. (Nachos) The restaurant probably thinks I'm crazy, I just started laughing at my phone.
It seems we will be going for pink covers. I should have another pink book finished today or tomorrow. I think I will start posting finished categories later this afternoon or evening unless someone objects or wants to. I will save books for category 7 in case the team changes its mind again. Jojiwoji has them nicely color coded and I will start with Category 1 and work my way through. If we get three posted this week, we will have 1 BAP added to our total on the next Sunday Update.
For the August Challenge using the Scattergories idea, this is a thought I had:Cerulean, Hobbit
C,R,L,N,H,B,T
There can be 7 rounds of scattergories using a different consonant from our team color (see above). If we have 11 categories for each letter that would be 77 books, but I think that would be doable for us. We did get through 59 books in 2 weeks of our June Hobbit Challenge so far. And we definitely had enough books for the 7% Challenge total just not all in the right categories we wanted to do.
Example for scattergories categories:(just ideas I found from website with bizarre August holidays))
1. Title
2. Author
3. Setting of book
4. Character in book
5. word relating to the sun
6. word relating to summer activities
7. word relating to lions/cats (Leo)
8. word relating to books (Book Lovers day Aug 9)
9. word relating to family (Sisters day first Sun in Aug)
10. word relating to natural disasters (Vesuvius day Aug 24)
11. word relating to fishing (national catfish month)
I posted completed categories 1,3,6,7 in the FINISHED Categories thread. I grayed out the books used in those categories since they can not be changed any more.
I would split characters name to male and female. We could also add fruit category (people eat plenty of it during summer) or just food. And how about things on covers? Something hot and/or cold?We also need rule one item per book ☺
What I had in mind...
All 'players' are 'playing' for themselves - trying o fill as many categories for a letter as they can before going to next one. That way we don't need to many categories ☺
And again we are making plans without Jojiwoji. Sorry!!!!!
We are only bringing up ideas, we have a lot of time to decide what we really want to do. The only problem I see with having each player 'play' for themselves is that the slower readers might opt out of playing because they can only read a few books in a month and not complete a letter. We could pick more letters and have fewer categories in each. If we do Scattergories, I like the idea of picking letters from our team name, though, to connect it to us specifically.C,E,R,U,L,A,N,K,H,O,B,I,T
I didn't think that we need to complete letter, just to find as many categories as we can with it. I do like the idea of using team's letters.I 'm not sure I'm following your idea. You want us to do it like 7%, where we read what we want and than try to fit it in certain category? Or you want us to 'reserve' category we want to cover? First is not Scattergories any more, it's more like scavenger hunt. Second will also lose us slower readers, 'couse we'll take those easy-to-find categories only because we are reading more and faster.
Maybe I should try and do that Hobbit journey? But I'm not sure that will be only one month game and I'm not sure we'll have 75 books at the end.
Okay, I see what you mean. Your idea is better for Scattergories, there is no need to complete letter in that game.Jojiwoji hasn't commented since increasing her goal. Maybe she has school again in Australia. Their seasons are opposite from ours.
I have to think of something to fit all those Nora Roberts books I'm gonna be reading first week. ☺How are we with spreadsheet updating since we have round two for cupcakes?
I think we might have to look on shelves to make sure we didn't miss a book. I have only added the last few books with pink covers to the list. Or we can probably not worry if we missed one and keep track from here since we will probably read enough books by the end anyway. If we repeat after completing it do we start challenge again, or can we only repeat where we haven't used up the categories? For example with spell outs can we reuse letters from the completed challenge or only ones we haven't used yet. I wasn't sure so I used as many non-spell out books as I could first when posting those categories to save as many letters as possible.

We can do max 5 categories and get 5 cupcakes
I've been following the conversation, just not commenting :)In Australia we have 10 weeks of school followed by a 2 week break, and 6 weeks in summer (your winter)
We are approaching the next holiday, and my activity will probably increase greatly then.
@Turtlecollector LK has said that we do not need to be conscious of previous letters used. We are starting completely from scratch, another Round so to speak.
Got green light from Dawn (Kat N Hat) (she is in charge of Scattergories in The Lost Challenges group). We can continue planning with clear conscience.
I will be helping my sister move this weekend and will only have access to the internet from my phone on Sunday afternoon. Can one of you do the Sunday Update this week?
