SOLVED. murder mystery with people using surrogate bodies to live but is not "Surrogates" [s]

Trying to remember a book should have been first in series & came out in ~2004, story set in future where hgher caste of people use surrogates to live their lives. Protagonist accused of murder, wife in something like a coma or just refusing to face reality, and ends with him planning to go to space. I think title had keywords, cities, light of moon, but unsure. was reading and moving across country so not sure of anything, other an enjoyed the tale and have always wondering where the author took it next.
