OMG, that is ridiculous on the landlord's part! I am so sorry.

It was seriously stressful, lol. My husband called to tell me at work and I just burst into tears. My landlord lost his job about 6 months ago so he was seriously struggling. He bought the house I was living in on a whim for 22,000 and didn't have a mortgage because he paid cash (not sure where he got the money). He's a young bachelor. He tried everything he could think of but the quote from the city was 25,000 which was more than he paid for the house and he couldn't get any loans because he was unemployed. Basically he has no choice but to sell the house as is for a few grand and cut his losses.
As much as it sucked for us, it really sucks for him too. And for the neighbors whose property value will go down now that he has to sell for so cheap.
We had to do a quick move, but it's done. I'm also more in the country now, and so while it's a drive to get back into the city (about 15 extra minutes, not bad) it's also nice to be out where there's less people, lol.
err...at the risk of sounding stupid, can you buy a house for $25,000? In Sydney a cheap house is going to cost at least $500,000. Things are so expensive here...but I didn't know there were places you could get a house for $25,000.
Ohhh yeah, you definitely can around where I am. Our housing market went downa few years and now you can find many a smaller 2-3 sometimes even 4 bedroom house for that cheap.
Not around here but I know in some parts of the country homes are a lot less. California is an expensive state to live in. Glad it all turned out for you Wendy and that it's finally over.
Wendy, sorry you had to move and with such short notice but also sorry for your ex-landlord. Just a bad situation all around. Glad you've gotten settled.Yep is very expensive to live in Southern California but then when we go for our walks by the ocean we remind ourselves that this is where people come for vacation! Hubby and I are very glad our parents relocated to CA way back in the 50's!
I just had to say I am so excited because I worked out for an hour today on my wii fit! I am trying to start my fitness regiment now for next summer instead of waiting until after the holidays. So far so good :) .

Well, I've realized how emotionally attached I've become to my Kindle Fire: the charger isn't working and can't replace it until payday! But going to the library is always a treat plus I love the feel and smell of "real" books. My arthritic hands will be so glad when they can hold the Kindle again instead of a heavy book that is almost 600 pages long
lol!
well I will tell ya if I had known how good yoga felt I would be an instructor by now. I need to walk some it would help me out and give me fresh air
Peggy Z wrote: "Well, I've realized how emotionally attached I've become to my Kindle Fire: the charger isn't working and can't replace it until payday!"Have you ever tried those Powermats? Not sure how much they cost but apparently you can lay pretty much any electronic device on it and it will charge it without having to use cables.

Thanks, Ian! Will have to look into that (hoping they're not too expensive)
Happy Halloween! Don't get many trick or treaters anymore so at least there isn't a lot of candy around!

Ian, Have you tried a powermat? I should have asked you in my above post!
They have them on Amazon but from what I read they are for cellphones. Our cells are "dinosours", pay-as-you-go with no internet service; they've been pretty much trouble free.
That's one of the reasons hubby got me the Kindle Fire but it's the first generation and I'm beginning to think that might be why I'm having problems. From what I read online the newer Kindle Fires are much more efficient with less problems.
But then again, I'm not very techy and am thinking about getting a Kindle Paperwhite for Christmas (mother-in-law is generous with cash gift!) since I usually only go online on PC and listen to music at home through the Amazon cloud also on PC.
Dam*! I just want the darn things to work and not have to deal with problems! lol
Well what a night!!! I was at work at the Nursinghome and there was a very bad storm. All the power went out and our generators failed. there we were at 1 am with no power and the patients with no oxygen!!!! Only 6 of us working with 80 helpless patients. We got all the residents out in the hall ways, we had to push beds and all into the halls. We used our phones to see by and too every portable O2 tank we had and gave it to the patients which needed air the most. Luckily no one died and only one resident fell. Now everyone is back in their rooms and its all quiet on the western front.
Peggy Z wrote: "Ian, Have you tried a powermat? I should have asked you in my above post! "I haven't....but I've seen promotional photos of other electronic devices sitting on them. Actually just looked it up. Kindles aren't Powermat enabled so you would need to buy another device to plug into it. It would be easier to just buy the cable.
Vanessa wrote: "I was at work at the Nursinghome and there was a very bad storm. All the power went out and our generators failed."Oh my...someone should be sacked over that. Those generators are essential. If they fail, someone hasn't been doing their job. It's awesome that you were able to get through it, but the fact that what should have been a blip became potentially life threatening will hopefully raise a whole bunch of flags.
We actually got in trouble for bringing the patients to the halls and a member of management said the patients could go without oxygen for a few hoursI am thinking about reporting her. I had to explain that we had to bring the most ill out in the halls to keep an eye on them and use our phones as a light to see by to make sure they didn't die without o2 because I had to refill all the portable tanks which took 30 min to do and that means they went without o2 for 45 min anyway. My God I was so mad when management started that crap!
The manager should definitely be reported. The comment should be documented. You have a duty of care to your patients and if management are endangering lives by their actions which would seem to be the case if the generators aren't properly maintained you should take action. Is it a work place where you can make reports like that without sanction?
no I will have retaliation. I am going straight to state so its anonymous because an hour into this the fire dept showed up with more o2 tanks because we ran out. I am telling you crazy isn't the word for what we went thru tonight
You should have a pretty good shot, but write down everything. If you have an incident pad record everything you can remember. When the fire department was called and by whom, how many firemen attended, even how many tanks they brought. If you can remember the names of any of the firemen...the names of those on shift. Whatever it is write it all down, and the times if you can remember...if you're not sure about the time make sure you write "estimated". If it comes back it will be helpful to refer to and be able to say, 'this person said this at this time'.
I called ems on my phone so that is in my record and I have pictures of all the fire trucks and it was the entire ems dept. that was here, approximately 20. They brought 4 D tanks. It was nuts!
wow, Vanessa, how scary for your patients. Glad all turned out well but is not good that your management would have such a callous attitude. Mom in Law (age 88) was in a nursing home for a week last year and we went in every day and stayed with her as long as possible.

Ian, thanks again! I might try the cable but I'm starting to lean towards the decision to wait until Christmas and get either a basic Kindle or Kindle Paperwhite. I have lots of physical books plus the library to tide me over till then!
Peggy its good that you stayed with your mother in law because anytime family is involved those patients get better and more attentive care.
Vanessa wrote: "Peggy its good that you stayed with your mother in law because anytime family is involved those patients get better and more attentive care."Thanks, she's always been so active and I think that's why she healed so quickly, plus she has a great attitude. She was recovering from a broken hip and even her doctor was surprised that she was able to go home so soon.
My mother who is nearly 90 had a hip replacement. Private hospital (The SAN) which was amazing. Then she went to a private rehabilitation facility for 6 weeks (Westmead Private)...don't remember the cost but we're talking in the range of about $5000 per week. She got bed sores. How can that happen in this day and age? My sister works for the Department of Community Services...she's quite high on the totem pole, and she really went after them and got some action, but think of all the people who don't have that sort of clout. It's kind of terrible to think about.

It's stressful enough for someone to go through surgery. Hope she is home now and able to get around.
Hubby's Mom is so thrilled with her new hip that she's going to ask her surgeon if she can have the other hip done. But we're a little leery of her going through the process again if it's not necessary.
edited to add: She broke her hip a year ago and had to completely recover from that operation before she had her hip replacement in Feb this year.
My fathers who's 65 is going to get hip replacement surgery this winter, he's so not looking forward to it. The whole family can't wait for him to do it because my dad is so active and he's been such a cranky man since he's been in such pain. It's so bad!

Sending good wishes that he has a speedy recovery!
Thanks Peggy, you're too sweet. I just want my fun loving dad back. He's just sooo cranky! He's not used to being the one trailing behind. He took a 3 week trip with my olest brother & nephew to Europe and he was in do much pain.
Trying to catch up... sorry I was AWOL for so long. I've MISSED all of you!I was losing my mind in this job search stuff. So I went heads-down into it and had a couple of bites, but no offers. Then my wonderful Gal Pals told me that they'd pay for me to go on our annual Autumn Getaway to a fabulous Bed & Breakfast/Winery that we love in Cedar City (and I visit at least once a year). Because I'm watching every dime these days, I just wasn't going to be able to go. But YAY! They took care of the gas and room, and several times, someone paid for my lunch or dinner. What great friends. They know that I routinely do that for some of them, when I have the $.
ANYWAY... Drum Roll Please - I GOT A JOB! It's a contract job at Caesars Entertainment International - I've worked for corporate companies with hotels/casinos and gaming companies before. It's at 4-6 month contract, so I'm focusing on that, and hoping that my job performance is good enough for them to offer me another contract, get another one from the recruiter I've been working with, or get offered a full time job. WHEW!
WENDY - sorry to hear about the quick move. Glad you & your DH were able to work it out in record time and get it done. I hate moving - all that packing and unpacking.
PEGGY - Have a funny/weird story about my Kindle Fire HD. I managed to drop it on my left big toe, rounded corner first, and MAN did it hurt! Those suckers don't seem to weigh much until you drop them!
I'm sure I missed other news here... sorry! Now that I don't have to be quite so heads-down job hunting, I can finally catch up on my reviews and my reading... and with all of you!

Love your rating system, Ian - very close to mine. Although I routinely give 1/2 stars, mostly at the 3.5 star level.
