My landlord lost his job about 6 months ago so he was seriously struggling. He bought the house I was living in on a whim for 22,000 and didn't have a mortgage because he paid cash (not sure where he got the money). He's a young bachelor. He tried everything he could think of but the quote from the city was 25,000 which was more than he paid for the house and he couldn't get any loans because he was unemployed. Basically he has no choice but to sell the house as is for a few grand and cut his losses.
As much as it sucked for us, it really sucks for him too. And for the neighbors whose property value will go down now that he has to sell for so cheap.
We had to do a quick move, but it's done. I'm also more in the country now, and so while it's a drive to get back into the city (about 15 extra minutes, not bad) it's also nice to be out where there's less people, lol.

Glad it all turned out for you Wendy and that it's finally over.

Yep is very expensive to live in Southern California but then when we go for our walks by the ocean we remind ourselves that this is where people come for vacation! Hubby and I are very glad our parents relocated to CA way back in the 50's!

Good for you! If I don't go for at least a short walk most days, I feel like a slug!

But going to the library is always a treat plus I love the feel and smell of "real" books. My arthritic hands will be so glad when they can hold the Kindle again instead of a heavy book that is almost 600 pages long

Have you ever tried those Powermats? Not sure how much they cost but apparently you can lay pretty much any electronic device on it and it will charge it without having to use cables.

Thanks, Ian! Will have to look into that (hoping they're not too expensive)
Happy Halloween! Don't get many trick or treaters anymore so at least there isn't a lot of candy around!

Ian, Have you tried a powermat? I should have asked you in my above post!
They have them on Amazon but from what I read they are for cellphones. Our cells are "dinosours", pay-as-you-go with no internet service; they've been pretty much trouble free.
That's one of the reasons hubby got me the Kindle Fire but it's the first generation and I'm beginning to think that might be why I'm having problems. From what I read online the newer Kindle Fires are much more efficient with less problems.
But then again, I'm not very techy and am thinking about getting a Kindle Paperwhite for Christmas (mother-in-law is generous with cash gift!) since I usually only go online on PC and listen to music at home through the Amazon cloud also on PC.
Dam*! I just want the darn things to work and not have to deal with problems! lol

I haven't....but I've seen promotional photos of other electronic devices sitting on them. Actually just looked it up. Kindles aren't Powermat enabled so you would need to buy another device to plug into it. It would be easier to just buy the cable.

Oh my...someone should be sacked over that. Those generators are essential. If they fail, someone hasn't been doing their job. It's awesome that you were able to get through it, but the fact that what should have been a blip became potentially life threatening will hopefully raise a whole bunch of flags.

I am thinking about reporting her. I had to explain that we had to bring the most ill out in the halls to keep an eye on them and use our phones as a light to see by to make sure they didn't die without o2 because I had to refill all the portable tanks which took 30 min to do and that means they went without o2 for 45 min anyway. My God I was so mad when management started that crap!

Is it a work place where you can make reports like that without sanction?

It was nuts!

Ian, thanks again! I might try the cable but I'm starting to lean towards the decision to wait until Christmas and get either a basic Kindle or Kindle Paperwhite. I have lots of physical books plus the library to tide me over till then!

Thanks, she's always been so active and I think that's why she healed so quickly, plus she has a great attitude. She was recovering from a broken hip and even her doctor was surprised that she was able to go home so soon.

How sad that your Mother had to have such a terrible experience with her hip replacement rehabilitation. It's stressful enough for someone to go through surgery. Hope she is home now and able to get around.
Hubby's Mom is so thrilled with her new hip that she's going to ask her surgeon if she can have the other hip done. But we're a little leery of her going through the process again if it's not necessary.
edited to add: She broke her hip a year ago and had to completely recover from that operation before she had her hip replacement in Feb this year.

I'm betting that your Dad's hip replacement will really help him to get back to being active again. Sending good wishes that he has a speedy recovery!

I was losing my mind in this job search stuff. So I went heads-down into it and had a couple of bites, but no offers. Then my wonderful Gal Pals told me that they'd pay for me to go on our annual Autumn Getaway to a fabulous Bed & Breakfast/Winery that we love in Cedar City (and I visit at least once a year). Because I'm watching every dime these days, I just wasn't going to be able to go. But YAY! They took care of the gas and room, and several times, someone paid for my lunch or dinner. What great friends. They know that I routinely do that for some of them, when I have the $.
ANYWAY... Drum Roll Please - I GOT A JOB! It's a contract job at Caesars Entertainment International - I've worked for corporate companies with hotels/casinos and gaming companies before. It's at 4-6 month contract, so I'm focusing on that, and hoping that my job performance is good enough for them to offer me another contract, get another one from the recruiter I've been working with, or get offered a full time job. WHEW!
WENDY - sorry to hear about the quick move. Glad you & your DH were able to work it out in record time and get it done. I hate moving - all that packing and unpacking.
PEGGY - Have a funny/weird story about my Kindle Fire HD. I managed to drop it on my left big toe, rounded corner first, and MAN did it hurt! Those suckers don't seem to weigh much until you drop them!
I'm sure I missed other news here... sorry! Now that I don't have to be quite so heads-down job hunting, I can finally catch up on my reviews and my reading... and with all of you!

Sorry to hear that, Regina...I totally get it, though. I always look to see what you're reading - I get some of the best reads off your shelves!

I tend to summarise a book and then give my impressions. My summaries are more detailed than the book blurb but I'm very careful not to give away sp..."
Love your rating system, Ian - very close to mine. Although I routinely give 1/2 stars, mostly at the 3.5 star level.
