Random Chat... What's going on with you?
I bought one of those Delonghi capsule coffee machines. Do any of you have one. They make pretty good coffee. Not as good as proper espresso...a really good coffee can't be rushed, it takes time...but better than instant coffee. Do any of you have one?

So...I have to buy a birthday gift for a woman...err older than 49, younger than 51 lol. I want to spend $50~$100. In the past I've bought her things like a l'Occitane gift basket...kosta boda glass...iPod. I generally like to buy things that are a little unique.
Any ideas?
What about a gift basket with all her favorite things? Is she's a reader, a book she might like. I say this because for our 10 year wedding anniversary this last Friday my husband gave me a basket will all my favorite things. It had a picture frame with us and the kids, a new coffee cup with Starbucks gift card, some hand lotion, Chapstick, my favorite candy and in the back was a picture of my new kindle paperwhite. Anyway - my point is that most of these things are simple and inexpensive (minus the kindle ;) and mean so much to me and shows that he pays attention to the things I like and make me happy. Which is a better any fancy gift.

Thanks Leea...I've given her gift baskets before (one with food and wine for Christmas and one with cosmetics for her birthday) and don't want to repeat it, but there are a few things in there that could work. She drinks tea, a couple of fine bone china teacups could work.

I don't know if you two have photos together but one of the best gifts I ever got from my husband was a personalized photo album (that you send away for online) of us doing fun things. It was just such an incredibly thoughtful gift - that he'd taken the time to find all those memories, and made me really happy.

I have a story. I'm not a church person but I have some friends who are and when I was staying with them a few years ago they somehow convinced me to go with them. During church everyone did that stand and sing thing which is just weird...but OK I can deal...30 minutes later I thought maybe it's time to sit down.
Then came the "Are there any visitors?" thing...and my friends and their three daughters all put up their hands like over-enthusiastic 10 year-olds in school, and point at me. At this point I could have quite happily been dragged into the fires of hell.
They had greeter type people who came up to me and gave me a welcome gift. A small bible, a notepad and pencil and candy.
I'm thinking to myself, with all the troubles the church has been having lately, is it really appropriate to be handing out candy?
Then after church I'm ready to make my get-away but my friends decide they want to talk. I go to the foyer, find a quiet corner and wait for them. An old lady comes up to me wanting to greet me...I don't really want to be greeted but OK if it makes her feel better I'll be a willing victim.
Then she starts doing that casual touches on the arm thing which is really kind of hot when it's a woman you're own age...but when it's a woman old enough to be your grandmother...very creepy.

Do you think writing by hand is a dying skill?With Japanese I probably write by hand 75% of the time and only use a keyboard about 25% of the time.
In English, I type well over 90% of the time. I had to write on a card today, and my handwriting was a mess...I made really stupid errors, the letters looked wrong...it was so bad, I actually laughed.
I wonder if computers are making handwriting a thing of the past?
I write at least everyday. Plus, i'm helping the boys do homework every night and it's all hand written. But I do agree with you Ian, hand writing is a dying art.
Yep, I agree that handwriting is dying out! When our sons were little they really didn't practice writing in cursive and the teachers were very relaxed even on printing. They're in their 20's now and do write handwritten thank you's for gifts but I don't know how anyone can read them! Older son is now in the military and he's improved a little but he mostly communicates by e-mail.
I can't write anymore. In fact I take notes on my iphone for new assignments from my boss or when I am out and about.
I have to write a lot, surprisingly, for my job. My handwriting has actually gotten better. My signature is worse, but my regular handwriting is better.
I go to work tonight then my vacation starts! I can't wait until 7am!

Have you tried to import books from goodreads? If you have, how long does it take?
I did...it said 1,312 hours to import them all. lol...I started the import but I kept on accidentally closing the window which seems to stop the import. Still I managed to get about 40 of them.

Ian, off to follow you. Here is mine: http://leea.booklikes.com/I joined back in June when Miss Kay told me about the site and it took forever for my books to import - like 2 days. I never when and fixed anything that went wrong with the import, just moved forward by adding the books i've read perviously and reviews.
Ian, I'll add you on Booklikes. It just doesn't seem like a social site... but I honestly haven't used it much. Fixing book's is possible, but it's a pain.
Funny shelving books and finding books is easier and better on librarything but booklikes has a better appearance. Librarything has forums but neither is very social.
Did you notice the half stars at BookLikes. How many years have Goodreads been saying it can't work?
I noticed them. I am waiting one particular book to be imported so I can rate it 2.5 :D (I had to give it three because the writing is really good, but it made me feel like crap).
LOVE the 1/2 stars... it's fantastic.
I actually really like Booklikes. I haven't had any issues. Although, I don't really shelve over there. I really just use it to post a review/blogs and reading and following other's reviews/blogs, lol. I use Goodreads for shelving and keeping track of things like that. My only complaint is that it's hard to find a book you've shelved to mark it as 'currently reading'. SOooo, I just don't, lol.

HaHa! Went to Booklikes today but it's just too slow for me. I'm also on Shelfari but it's difficult at times also: threads won't load, etc.
So will stick with Goodreads and hoping for the best :D

A lot of people have created a Booklikes account recently because they were curious (including me). I think most would just do as you say - stick with Goodreads for now and hope for the best.
I won't be leaving Goodreads, but I'm going to use BookLikes as well. I love the half star rating they offer. My blog reviews tend to be 200-300 words...my Goodreads reviews tend to be 100-200 words...I'm thinking I might try to keep my reviews on BookLikes to under 50 words.

Booklikes isn't usually slow.
It's suddenly faster today and I can access on my phone. I had been able to access on my phone months ago and it was never as slow as the last few days (mass attempted exodus).

I definitely won't stop using Goodreads. It's still my go to.
Don't know if it's our slow internet connection; we have what I call "bottomfeeder" modem with Cox Cable at the lowest price they offer. I tried Booklikes again today and was still very slow. Oh well! lol!
As Regina said it also might be due to the "mass attempted exodus" so maybe will let a few weeks go by and try again.
I've been having trouble logging on to Booklikes lately - seems horribly slow. Is that the influx of new folks? It's ANNOYING!And once again, I don't think that it's a very social site, or I haven't gotten the hang of it yet. (Probably the latter.)
