Kay (calikay) | 667 comments You got to pick it up, DG!

Angie, I agree...JM has a way of writing so emotionally.

Last year, I read all of JM's back list of contemporaries since I already read all of her historicals a few years ago. The one that stood out for me is Double Standards by Judith McNaught and Paradise (Second Opportunities, #1) by Judith McNaught .

Oh, man. I forgot about Double Standards. I love that one, too!

I remember the first time I read Paradise (my first book of hers,) I finished at three in the morning, and I was bawling like a baby. That book is probably one of the most emotional books I have read in my entire life. LOL

And then I read everything she had published at the time.

My favorite historical of hers is Almost Heaven. What is yours, Kay? Leea?

message 2303: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments I read all her historicals first so when I read Whitney, My Love...I read it in one day and stayed up until 4am to finish it. I couldn't believe the rawness of feelings she made me feel. So, I finished all her historicals within a few weeks and then moved on to her contemporaries. Gah...I wish she is still writing. Her next book has been pushed out year after year.

I can't pick just one. I love them all! There is something special about each one of them. I did a re-read last year of all her historicals and I was amazed how emotionally gut wrenching her books were the 2nd time around.

Yes, they are so emotional. And the punch is still there the second time around.

Oh, I forgot about Once and Always (Sequels, #1) by Judith McNaught . That's also one of my favorites.

I agree about her books getting pushed back. It's sad to think we may never get something new from her.

Lisa | 383 comments Just finished Mr. Perfect by Linda Howard - loved it! I'm another one who wouldn't had picked it up even though I love mysteries, but the cover isn't an eye-catcher and unless somebody recommended it or it was a group read (which it was), then it's a pass. My loss. SO glad it came up as a group read.

Now I'm starting The Silver Linings Playbook by Matthew Quick . Saw the movie and liked it. I needed a book that takes place in Philadelphia for the JAMIE challenge.

message 2315: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) I'm stuck in Night Huntress world. Yeah, when I get started on a series, if it sucks me in, I'm gone.

Blasted through One Foot in the Grave (Night Huntress, #2) by Jeaniene Frost and just over the half-way mark with At Grave's End (Night Huntress, #3) by Jeaniene Frost . I'm getting nervous, because many of you said that after book 3, you lost interest.

I originally picked this up, because I got Once Burned (Night Prince, #1) by Jeaniene Frost as a freebie Kindle book. When I looked at the series, I decided I should start with Night Huntress. But do I have to read Night Huntress world books before moving on to the Night Prince?

message 2316: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 383 comments Well, dang! After reading the beginning ofThe Silver Linings Playbook turns out it takes place in New Jersey! In the movie, they changed it to Philadelphia. Good grief. Now I have to find a different Philadelphia book but still plan to finish reading Silver Linings.

message 2317: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 383 comments The Night Huntress World books focus on each of the Bones' pals/team, I don't think it's vital to read those before the Night Prince. Oh, except some couples that meet and get together appear in the Night Prince, if I remember right. Hmmm...maybe you might want to read the World books first so there won't be any spoilers when you read NP.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments I haven't read any of the NH world books but have read Night Prince. The couples from the NH world make cameos in the series but I sort of glossed over them being there because they're minimal supporting cast. So I think you could probably go either way without missing much.

Lisa, how weird that they'd change the location from the book to the movie.

I am loving A Hidden Fire (Elemental Mysteries, #1) by Elizabeth Hunter so far. I really wished that I'd listened and read it sooner. Talk about a very pleasant surprise! Yay for a new UF series to latch on to!

*ears perk up* New UF series? Just grabbed the first book.

message 2320: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 383 comments Oh good, I'm glad that Stacia can give Lori another perspective of reading Night Prince before Night Huntress World :) It's been at least a year since I've read those books so my memory is foggy.

Movies change a lot of stuff from the books they're based on. I wonder if they did it because Pat's dad was such a Philadelphia Eagles fan and it made better since for viewers? OR, shooting locations in Philly is cheaper than New Jersey?

Stacia - was A Hidden Fire the book we're going to buddy read? Oh, or was it Spider's Bite? Another Elemental book? LOL

message 2321: by Sandra (new)

Sandra | 27 comments Big YAY! More love for Gio and B!!
So glad you're enjoying it too, Stacia ^_^

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments There's a lot of elemental books, haha. Apparently, stuff with elemental in the title is a hit with me.

Yes, we were going to do Spider's Bite. Hopefully in August?

Yay, Stacia! It's a terrific series. You're so lucky to have all the books and spin-offs to enjoy. ;o)

message 2324: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 383 comments Sometime in August sounds good to me, Stacia. Meanwhile, I hope to read A Hidden Fire sometime since it's already on my kindle.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments I think it might be a freebie again for kindle.

Books about billionaires just don't interest me - when they are the hero - anyway. And stories about white collar professionals in romance anyway - don't do it for me. Maybe because I live in that world.

On my way home from camping. I only got a little bit of reading in.

message 2329: by Stacia (the 2010 club) (last edited Jul 25, 2013 09:11PM) (new)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments My last one that was 4.5 rounding up to 5 was Time Between Us (Time Between Us, #1) by Tamara Ireland Stone because it was so refreshingly simple and not overworked. It was nothing more than a sweet love story without all of the angst or love triangles and I loved that it wasn't trying to be anything more.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments Finished The Yonahlossee Riding Camp for Girls by Anton DiSclafani and my feelings were so mixed. I love vintage feeling books and the concept of a young woman being shipped off to a riding school for rich girls in the middle of everyone else suffering through the Great Depression seemed like an interesting idea.

The writing was absolutely beautiful, but it was very slow for the first half and the second half was extremely dark. I sort of ended up feeling very melancholy and unsatisfied when I was done. :( It's definitely an adult book though, even with the young character age.

message 2331: by Courtney (new)

Courtney | 159 comments Finished An Accidental Goddess by Linnea Sinclair . The only thing I liked was that it gave me the feeling of those Star Trek Voyager days that I used to watched when I was a kid. The romance and characters fell flat for me.

Now I'm going to read Soulless (Parasol Protectorate, #1) by Gail Carriger !

I remember you mentioning this a few weeks ago. It sounds like something I'd like plus the storyline seems different.

message 2333: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) Yay for another Elemental Mysteries fan! I really got into that series and raced through them. At the time, the Kindle versions were all on sale or free, so it was an easy series for me to get all the books at once.

Book 4 of Night Huntress Destined for an Early Grave (Night Huntress, #4) by Jeaniene Frost was... kinda sucky. It felt oddly misplaced in this series. I kept expecting (view spoiler) Lots of action and angst - almost too much, for me. But I'll finish out the series. Whether I go through the Night Huntress World stuff... dunno. But I like Vlad, so I'll read the Night Prince stuff - at least book 1, since I already have it.

I am SO BEHIND on my reviews, it's not even funny. I'm going to have to take Sunday afternoon and just write everything up.

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) Kay wrote: "I'm in a reading rut again. Just curious...what are some of your recent 5* books. Maybe that will help me decide what to read next."

Kay, two very different 5 stars I enjoyed lately were the sweet YA romance Eleanor & Park and the excellent investigative thriller Anonymous Sources.

message 2335: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments Thanks, Tellulah. I loved Eleanor & Park! I'll have to check out Anonymous Sources.

I ended up reading the first few pages of Time Between Us (Time Between Us, #1) by Tamara Ireland Stone and it sucked me in. So, I will be reading this one. Thanks for the rec, Stacia.

message 2336: by D.G. (last edited Jul 26, 2013 09:02AM) (new)

D.G. So I started this book about a single mother who works a lot and her mother babysits her child for her. So in the first chapter, she had to leave work late and she bought pizza for dinner. When she got home, she finds out her mother had cooked but instead of eating the home cooked meal (salad and something else), she gives her kid pizza.

That really bothered me. I mean, all things being the same, wouldn't you think that eating a home cooked meal would be better for the child than pizza? Also, it seems the mother cooks all the time but she doesn't eat the food because she mentions tons of leftovers in the freezer. However, there's no explanation about the mother not being a good cook or this being pizza night or anything. She just gave pizza to the kid with no explanation. And if the mother cooks often, why didn't she call her mother and tell her not to cook that she'll bring the pizza home?

I know it's a little thing but it sort of brought me out of the story and now I don't like this heroine - she seems selfish to me (there's other stuff I don't like about her...she seems to treat her kid like a burden too.)

message 2339: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments Finished This Girl (Slammed, #3) by Colleen Hoover and it mediocre... then ending was the best. This was another male POV book and it was just a lot of repetition, just got old.

Now i'm going to read another arc, Under a Texas Sky by Dorothy Garlock . It sounded good but no other friends have read it so this could be a total flop or fantastic. lol!

My boys started Kindergarten and 2nd grade today! It's amazing to me that they're finally both in school, a little bittersweet. Here are the boys... Poor guys we're looking into the sun :)

Lisa | 383 comments Great photo - the boys are SO cute! Wish I had thought of the sign when my kids were in school. I always took their pic 1st day of school standing in front of the door so we can see how much taller they were each year.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments Aw, that's cute Leea! I can't wait to get my "first day of school" pics next week. :) The sign idea is a great one.

Finished A Hidden Fire (Elemental Mysteries, #1) by Elizabeth Hunter and enjoyed it. Tellulah's probably going to laugh at me because it's another 3.5 rating (I swear, I have been rating books all over the board lately, so not as many 3.5's anymore!) but I still thought it good (that's my rating between okay and really liked it). I think it was a promising start to the series, with only a few minor hiccups. It was good enough to get me interested in reading further on, at least!

Starting The Mistress (The Original Sinners, #4) by Tiffany Reisz

Although I notice in the past three months your average has only changed from 3.16 to 3.15. I just started a book which I think might be right up your alley. It's called Libriomancer ... very early days but is looking promising.

Are there any smart language people here? Just curious...in the above sentence, should I use "which" or "that" or are both OK?

message 2349: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments I would use That but i'm not a "smart Language person" lmao!!

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments There isn't a right answer. If I notice that I'm using "that" a lot, I'll look at my sentences. If there's a sentence with the word "that" in it twice, I'll see if I can switch out "which" for one of the instances. In some cases, you can't make the switch.

I try to look at how the sentence reads and "which" word sounds better when I read it in my head.
