Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments the Superbowl is going to be interesting...Broncos and Seahawks...I wouldn't have picked either at the beginning of the season, I don't think

Leea | 1437 comments Bummed about the 49ers loosing...

message 5153: by D.G. (new)

D.G. I really thought the 49ers were going to win - I didn't watch the end of the game (was watching Downtwon Abbey and Sherlock) so I was surprised when I saw Seattle made it.

message 5154: by Tellulah (new)

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) I'm almost halfway through Wicked as They Come (Blud, #1) by Delilah S. Dawson At first I found it a bit info dumpy but I'm getting more and more drawn in.

message 5155: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) Finished up book Nature of Desire book #7 Branded Sanctuary (Nature of Desire, #7) by Joey W. Hill . It was tough going for me, because of the subject matter - the MC gal is dealing with getting mentally and emotionally past a recent violent attack that resurfaced buried memories of a childhood incident. But what I really enjoyed is that it's not your usual BDSM book... She thinks she has to "fit in" with his world, and he is the submissive. It was very unexpected how they worked it all out - not at all what you'd think.

Started Meant to Be by Lauren Morrill ... but I'm not digging it. I took a quick look at the reviews, and I was relieved to see that I'm feeling a lot like Wendy expressed in her review. So, I haven't been chatting about it in the Buddy Read thread yet, because I was concerned about expressing my extremely mixed feelings - how the book almost seems schizophrenic to me.

Feels like I'm falling behind in my reading. Getting through a single book seems to take so long these days!

Maybe it's that nothing is really exciting me or energizing me as I read it? Not sure...

Leea | 1437 comments I'm reading Coming Home (Jackson Falls, #1) by Laurie Breton and it's really good. I love the interpersonal relationships, lots of ups and downs and a woman who's so amazing...

I read a book by this author years ago. It was Final Exit by Laurie Breton , and I remember really enjoying it.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments Finished Phoenix Island by John Dixon and it was a slow starter, but eventually picked up.

Starting The Darkest Minds (The Darkest Minds, #1) by Alexandra Bracken in the morning for a buddy read and also starting The Virgins by Pamela Erens because I haven't read a lit fic in a while.

message 5161: by Peggyzbooksnmusic (new)

Peggyzbooksnmusic Finished The Winter Palace: A Novel of Catherine the Great which I liked but didn't love so gave it 3 stars.

Now starting Maids of Misfortune which is a cozy historical mystery. Needed something light and fun after the intrigue of Russian court life :D

message 5162: by D.G. (last edited Jan 21, 2014 04:19AM) (new)

D.G. I'm glad I'll be picking back up Steel's Edge (The Edge, #4) by Ilona Andrews because I'm not sure I'm enjoying the ebook I'm reading - Cowgirls Don't Cry (Rough Riders, #10) by Lorelei James . It's like I should be simpathizing with these people but I'm not.

message 5163: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I just don't like the edge books. I can't get into them.

message 5164: by Jen (at last!) (new)

Jen (at last!) (jenkeith) | 222 comments I'm currently reading Royal Blood (Her Royal Spyness Mysteries, #4) by Rhys Bowen since I love the Georgie series. I'm also listening to the audiobook for World War Z An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks .

message 5165: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I listened to the abridged version but loved the audio of World War Z.

I am reading so many books right now. I started one but couldn't get into it The Crane Wife by Patrick Ness -- I love Ness and this is an ARC so I feel bad. I am reading these right now:

The Dead in Their Vaulted Arches (Flavia de Luce, #6) by Alan Bradley Dhalgren by Samuel R. Delany and listening to The Round House by Louise Erdrich

cowgirls don't cry is probably one of my least favorite in the series

message 5167: by Tellulah (new)

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) In the end Wicked as They Come (Blud, #1) by Delilah S. Dawson was a pretty fair read. I still want to read the novella but I'm not sure I care about book two if it's Casper's story. Has anyone read it?

message 5168: by D.G. (new)

D.G. Regina wrote: "I just don't like the edge books. I can't get into them."

I can understand that. I'm not crazy about the whole 'Edge' mentality. This one at least is mostly in the Weird (I find those names so silly!) so I'm enjoying it more.

message 5169: by D.G. (new)

D.G. Dee wrote: "cowgirls don't cry is probably one of my least favorite in the series "

I hear you. This will probably be the last book I read in the series. They have been getting so repetitive and it angers me that I cannot keep people straight - why give everybody names starting with the same letters and sounding alike! I have like a hundred first cousins and let me tell you, very few of our names rhyme, have the same number of syllables while starting with the same letter. It can be done!

And there are soo many freaking kids!

message 5170: by Regina (last edited Jan 21, 2014 10:40AM) (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments LOL DG about the names, very true. I tend to read these books when I am in the mood for smut. I think I am up around where you are. I noticed my library just got all of these books in ebook, that made me laugh.

I just don't care about the romances and don't buy into the conflict -- it is a weird merging. I can almost see the two distinct authors in these books.

message 5172: by Angie Elle, BaBAMB!!! (new)

Angie Elle (angieelle) | 696 comments Speaking of names...how much does a name play into whether or not you will read a book? I've read a book before where I wasn't able to pronounce the name, and it took away from my enjoyment of the story, so finally I changed the name in my head. LOL

Also, I've read blurbs before that sounded really good, but the name had a apostrophe in it, and it just turned me off to the book. Weird, I know, but it happened. LOL

So how much does a name play into your decision to read a book?

message 5173: by Jen (at last!) (new)

Jen (at last!) (jenkeith) | 222 comments Regina wrote: "I listened to the abridged version but loved the audio of World War Z. ..."

I like it so far! I love all the various voices of the narrators. Lends credibility to the book!

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments Angie wrote: "Speaking of names...how much does a name play into whether or not you will read a book? "

I used to train with a guy named Shane. His nickname in the dojo was Stewey (because he was psychopathic baby). Before that, I knew another guy named Shane who was a racist...a misogynist and a welfare cheat. And in primary school (lol...40 years ago) I had a classmate named Shane who was a bully.

Yeah...if I see a book with a main character named Shane, I move onto the next book.

D.G. Angie wrote: "I've read a book before where I wasn't able to pronounce the name, and it took away from my enjoyment of the story.."

That's why God invented audiobooks! HAHAHAHAHA!!

But I'm totally with you there. If I have problems pronuncing a name, it pulls me out the story. And fantasy authors are the worst!

yeah, I actually wrote a rather pointed review about that...she had an anthology that came out, and it ended up being Keely basically pooping out baby after baby and it was like WTF

D.G. Regina wrote: "I just don't care about the romances and don't buy into the conflict -- it is a weird merging. I can almost see the two distinct authors in these books. "

You can tell they are not romance authors because the romance is almost secondary - the third one was the worst with the most ill timed love scene I've ever read- I was all WTH?? Do you really have to do it NOW?? And there's not one overall conflict in the series but different conflicts per book which makes it somewhat weird in an UF type book. I think this last one has been the best for me, first the conflict is compelling (they are trying to end slavery) and the two characters make sense for each other. I don't know that I saw that in the other books.

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments I finished reading Redemption Road (Jackson Falls #4) by Laurie Breton which was good but I think the prior books were better. I'm off to search for my next read...

Have been wanting to read this author Rhys Bowen for a while. Will have to bump her up on the TBR list!

Leea | 1437 comments Finished Coming Home (Jackson Falls, #1) by Laurie Breton and I really liked it! It was such an emotional book.

I'm bogged down with ARC's but I kind of want to read Sleeping With the Enemy (Jackson Falls, #2) by Laurie Breton ...

Also my baby is turning 6 tomorrow, when did that happen? Ha!

message 5182: by Peggyzbooksnmusic (new)

Peggyzbooksnmusic Oh wow, Leea! 6 already :D They do grow up too fast; our "baby" is now 22.

Wishing him an awesome birthday!

Happy birthday! My baby turned 12 a couple of weeks ago and is almost as tall as me. I've been hugging her a lot.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments Finished The Virgins by Pamela Erens . Meh. Another strike against this category of coming-of-age literary fiction. Will try again at some point to find another one that might work for me.

Really liking The Darkest Minds, and might try to finish up Torn from You (Tear Asunder, #1) by Nashoda Rose tonight, which has really fallen off in the second half. It's too bad because the first half was crazy.

message 5185: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments I finished reading The Do-Over by M.K. Schiller which was very fun and I enjoyed it.

Leea...Happy Birthday to Garrett!

message 5186: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments Thanks everyone! We're having a fun day hanging out and then going to dinner tonight.

I ended up starting Sleeping With the Enemy, just read the two chapters.

message 5187: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments I started reading The Chocolate Thief (Amour et Chocolat #1) by Laura Florand .

I hope everyone is having a good day!

message 5188: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments Finished Sleeping With the Enemy (Jackson Falls, #2) by Laurie Breton and I enjoyed it. It really was a different from the first book, Coming Home.

Now I need a genre change... what to read next?

message 5189: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments just got done reading Hunted - I won her pre-order giveaway (which included a $25 amazon giftcard - hell yeahz!) - I liked it, but the ending came too quick...the whole climax started at like 92% - I wanted a bit more, but not bad for a debut

and Rosalind James just sent me an ARC of her newest one Asking for Trouble - which is bk 3 in her Kincaid series (about the sister) and also reading Love in a Pawn Shop

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments Finished Torn from You (Tear Asunder, #1) by Nashoda Rose . I haven't read a more cringe-worthy book in a very long time. Both the content and the editing were in need of help.

Example : (she) signed the document and put it back in the vanilla envelope.

message 5191: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments Oh boy, Stacia!!

I started Somerset by Leila Meacham and it's a sweeping historical. I read the first section and I can't wait till they get to Texas.

message 5192: by Ian (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments Stacia (waiting on tomorrow) wrote: "Example : (she) signed the document and put it back in the vanilla envelope."

That's a tough one...they're not quite caramel envelopes...definitely not cinnamon....maybe custard.

lol...I did the google search...somewhat afraid of the sexual deviants I would see. Thankfully all I saw was envelopes.

message 5193: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments I'm sorry Stacia - that made me laugh though

message 5194: by D.G. (new)

D.G. Oh gosh!

Yup...definitely more custard than vanilla! HAHAHAHAHA!

message 5195: by Tellulah (new)

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) Read a total piece of poo book. Spy Games (Spy Camp, #2) by Gina Robinson Everything was wacky. The characters, the plot which just seemed randomly piled on - this despite there being a stalker ex-boyfriend and murder. No character growth. Just much irritation.

message 5196: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments Still reading... Somerset by Leila Meacham and it's very interesting. The story of a man trying to make his own mark in Texas.

Happy Friday!

message 5197: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments Now sure about Somerset by Leila Meacham anymore. I feel like the character are just to rich and privileged for this migration to feel like a struggle at all. I enjoy reading real people making their way in the west. I'm half way through as the author is now skipping 5 years every chapter, it's getting a little confusing. I don't know where this is going.

Has anyone read her other book, Roses?

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments I wanted to read Roses a couple of years ago when I fell in love with the cover, but never did.

Finished Forever (Temptation, #3) by Karen Ann Hopkins and thought it was a lovely ending to the trilogy. I will need to find some new Amish romances to read now.

Starting Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge

message 5199: by Tellulah (new)

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) Read Shadowglass (The Shadowfae Chronicles, #2) by Erica Hayes Simply laden with adjectives in every sentence and verbs that felt run through a thesaurus. Plus waaay to much sex at the expense of plot and she had magic vagina to the nth degree. Regrettable.

message 5200: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 419 comments Finished Tears of Tess (Monsters in the Dark, #1) by Pepper Winters . nice and dark enough for me. Now I'm reading Connected (Connections, #1) by Kim Karr . I feel like there's something missing with it. The tragedy seemed off. I don't know. I hope that I'm not reading more into this than I should.
