Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments It's supposed to be the coldest playoff game ever.

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I am listening to the Diana Gabaldon short story in Dangerous Women by George R.R. Martin it takes place when Jamie is young.

That absolutely makes sense. Though I'm pretty nervous about my drive in the morning. I live in the rural area outside the city and our streets don't get plowed until last.

message 4955: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Oh be safe!!

I am enjoying this short story more than I thought. It takes place right after Jamie's father died, after he was flogged - -and after he is in France.

message 4956: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments Oh that short about Jamie in France sounds good.

It was beautiful here today, sunny and 67. When we were watching the 49er game, the ground looked so cold. Yikes!

Everyone is the be safe tomorrow with all the weather. We're in need a rain, very badly.

Leea | 1437 comments I started Nice Girls Don't Have Fangs (Jane Jameson, #1) by Molly Harper and it's very funny.

We also finished our family read of Little House in the Big Woods (Little House, #1) by Laura Ingalls Wilder and the boys loved it! Next up, we're planning on reading Charlotte's Web by E.B. White

message 4958: by Courtney (new)

Courtney | 159 comments Finished Troubled Waters (Elemental Blessings, #1) by Sharon Shinn and was a little disappointed by it. Guess I had high hopes for it.

Starting A Study in Silks (The Baskerville Affair, #1) by Emma Jane Holloway .

message 4959: by Tellulah (new)

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) Finished Double Cross (The Disillusionists Trilogy, #2) by Carolyn Crane Not as good as the first book for me. I kept walking away from it through the first half. And while it did pick up in a fun way, the cliffhanger was pretty "Yup, this is exactly what had to happen here in book two". And I'm not sure I felt like that was a good thing. So I do want to find out what happens but am probably going to catch up on some other reads first.

Hope your boys enjoy Charlotte's Web by E.B. White Was a fav of our 2 sons when they were little!

Finished up a few more in the Stephanie Plum series
Visions of Sugar Plums (Stephanie Plum, #8.5) by Janet Evanovich which I didn't really care for. Only reason it got 2 stars from me is the appearance of Morelli at the end!

Loved To the Nines (Stephanie Plum, #9) by Janet Evanovich although I'm taking a break from the series for a while.

Have just started The Winter Palace A Novel of Catherine the Great by Eva Stachniak

Leea | 1437 comments Finished Nice Girls Don't Have Fangs (Jane Jameson, #1) by Molly Harper and it was okay. I just couldn't get into it like the other Harper books i've read.

Now i'm going to start Return to Poughkeepsie (Poughkeepsie, #2) by Debra Anastasia with Wendy! I'm nervous, I didn't like the last book by this author and i'm worried I liked Poughkeepsie so much and maybe that was just a fluke.

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Leea did you read And One Last Thing? And One Last Thing ... by Molly Harper

message 4963: by Kay (last edited Jan 08, 2014 01:16PM) (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments I finished reading a YA... Unmaking Hunter Kennedy by Anne Eliot and it was cute but nothing to jump up and down for.

I've been frustrated with my reading choices lately. I just haven't read a good book for awhile :( I also feel like I can't really surf on goodreads to find anything good especially with the deceiving high ratings for some...it just sucks.

I really liked One Last Thing by Molly Harper. Have you all found any other authors that are similar?

message 4964: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Dee and Ian recommend A Little Night Magic by Lucy March a friend in another group (I think you know her - -StephB) recommends A Werewolf in Manhattan (Wild About You, #1) by Vicki Lewis Thompson . I bought the audio of a little night magic, but the reviews for A Werewolf in Manhattan are mixed so that is holding me back.

How about trying a subject matter that you haven't read much of before? Sometimes I'll spend time reading through book synopsis after synopsis until I find something that I haven't come across in the past.

I'm still trying to work through galleys at the moment. I thought that The Troop by Nick Cutter was going to be creepy and fun, but it's turning out to just be creepy and disturbing. I don't know if I'll be able to make it through.

Started No One Else Can Have You by Kathleen Hale and something about the friendship vibe is reminding me of Dangerous Girls by Abigail Haas so far. I'm not sure if that means I'll like the book or not, but I'm interested enough to keep reading for now.

message 4967: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments Yeah, good idea, Stacia. I should venture out of my comfort zone. I haven't browsed Netgalley or Edelweiss lately...I'll go check out what's over there.

message 4968: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Kay, I somehow missed the part that said you were struggling with finding something to read. I definitely agree with Stacia that you should either read something you don't normally read or you should do a genre switch. I recommend looking at recommended lists -- maybe even not on goodreads. I also suggest looking for books that are tried and true on the recommended lists -- not untried ones from E and NG. For me, I will look at what is new at the library, what are recent award winners and genres or groupings that I like.

message 4969: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments Thanks, Regina. That helps. I haven't thought about the library and will check out some lists...most likely lists that I normally don't read.

message 4970: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments Has anyone read Beyond Shame (Beyond, #1) by Kit Rocha ? It sounds like an erotica dystopian. My GR friends have given it mixed reviews.

Anna (Bobs Her Hair) Kay wrote: "Has anyone read Beyond Shame (Beyond, #1) by Kit Rocha? It sounds like an erotica dystopian. My GR friends have given it mixed reviews."

I loved it, Kay! It is not for the light of heart tho. If you want to indulge your dirty birdy, then go for it. Some thought it had too much sex. I disagree. It matched the setting, plot, and characters, IMO. :o)

message 4972: by Regina (last edited Jan 08, 2014 03:52PM) (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Kay that looks really good! My GR friends have given it from 3.5 to 5 stars.

message 4973: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments Yeah, I can't wait to see what you think. I want to read it now. I haven't read an erotic dystopian book before.

message 4974: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments Thanks, Anna. That's good to know that you enjoyed it.

Regina, 3.5-5 is pretty decent. I have a few GR friends that marked it as DNF.

Leea...we should buddy read and I haven't read a dystopian erotica either.

message 4975: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I would love to find a really good dystopian or post apoc )(preferably post apoc/apoc) steamy romance/erotica. Years later I am still so disappointed by Nightfall (Dark Age Dawning, #1) by Ellen Connor because I thought that would be the series that met that niche.

message 4976: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments I agree, Regina. I didn't care that much for Nightfall either.

message 4977: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments With Beyond Shame (Beyond, #1) by Kit Rocha , this author also writes under Moira Rogers and I didn't really care for Crux (Southern Arcana, #1) by Moira Rogers but I'm willing to give Beyond Shame a try.

message 4978: by Regina (new)

YES!!! We haven't read a book together in a long time. Last one I picked sucked. haha!

message 4986: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) Courtney, I just couldn't get into A Study in Silks (The Baskerville Affair, #1) by Emma Jane Holloway . The premise sounds good, but the execution felt slow and bogged down.

Finished Takedown Twenty (Stephanie Plum, #20) by Janet Evanovich - the "latest" Stephanie Plum... ho hum, nothing to write home about.

Found what I thought would be a fun new series about gals & guys in FBI or CIA and a private company hired by those agencies - book I read was Garrison's Creed (Titan, #2) by Cristin Harber , but it just didn't sit right with me; too many things that real covert agents would never reveal.

Starting Divergent (Divergent, #1) by Veronica Roth - never read it before! And also the next couple of books in the Mayan gods (Accidentally Yours) series I've been reading, which are weird, but strangely addicting, Vampires Need Not...Apply? (Accidentally Yours, #4) by Mimi Jean Pamfiloff and Accidentally...Cimil? (Accidentally Yours, #4.5) by Mimi Jean Pamfiloff .

I need to check out the True Love group reads... am I missing something?

message 4987: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments Lori, our group read this month is Meant to Be by Lauren Morrill and few of us will buddy read Beyond Shame (Beyond, #1) by Kit Rocha this Friday, if you want to join.

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments I picked up The Rake (Lessons in Love, #1) by Suzanne Enoch last night and it's been on my TBR list forever. It's been a while since I've read a good HR so I am really enjoying this author's writing style.

message 4989: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments yay!! good job!

message 4990: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments I know, Regina...it's a relief to find a decent book and not waste any of my time. LOL

Suzanne Enoch doesn't receive the attention she 's due! She also wrote a fun romantic suspense (Sam Jellicoe) series. (The heroine is a cat burglar. The romance progresses with each book.). Then, the pub gave it the ax! Grrr! Enoch once mentioned the possibility of self-pub other books for the series, as she still has storyline ideas. It's been a few years.

Anyway, she's a talented HR writer! ;)

Kay, there's a book on NG that I actually read at my library so not sure how that happened. Anyway, it's called Anonymous Sources and it's an investigative thriller that I really really enjoyed.

I agree, Anna. I think Suzanne Enoch is incredibly underrated. She has some fantastic books.

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments Angie and Anna -- I just finished The Rake. I really enjoyed it!! I definitely will read more by this author.

Anna (Bobs Her Hair) @Kay...Also try By Love Undone (Bancroft Brothers, #1) by Suzanne Enoch and Reforming a Rake (With This Ring, #1) by Suzanne Enoch . She has a new series out, which I want to read. Future buddy read? ;)

Adding those to my list. Definitely future buddy read :)

Anna (Bobs Her Hair) @Kay. Nix Reforming a Rake. The book I meant is Taming Rafe. It's follows By Love Undone (The Bancroft Brothers, #1). There are only two books. I've read the Sin and Sensibility series. None of my GR friends have read her newest series (Scandalous Highlanders series), so I'm not sure how good it may be. There's also the Scandalouse Brides, The Adventurers' Club, and The Notorious Gentlemen that seem good. Do any of those series appeal? Any 101 people have suggestions/picks?

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments I might try to see if I can start Beyond Shame (Beyond, #1) by Kit Rocha tomorrow, but I am not sure I'll be able to. I think it's sad because Anna's the one who recommended it and iirc, I was supposed to do the original buddy read with her back when we had the arcs and I never did.

Finished The Troop by Nick Cutter finally and although it had a cool horror-throwback vibe (he took a few ideas from Stephen King), I thought the book was too gratuitous at times for no good reason and sometimes the narrative was a bit dry. It could have been much better than it was. A very "eh" 2 stars from me.

Also finished Natural Law (Nature of Desire, #2) by Joey W. Hill and have mixed feelings. I loved the first 30% of the book, but there was a scene toward the middle which pissed me off. I might need a day or two to ponder. The sexual dynamic was great and the suspense addition was unexpected (but not bad). It was a 2 to 3 star read with a couple of 5 star scenes.

message 5000: by Leea, Escape Artist (last edited Jan 09, 2014 09:28PM) (new)

Leea | 1437 comments It sucks reading just 'okay' books... I'm reading Return to Poughkeepsie and there are parts that I love and parts that seem so chopped up, like a puzzle that doesn't fit. I mean, I liked the first book but right now I just want this to be done with. Part of me also wants Eve with a better guy, Ryan. Plus it just crude, not is a funny way at all. I wish I could say there has been some smokin' hot sex but nope. ha! My favorite part is Kyle/Cole and Livia/Blake.

Hope you can join us, Stacia. I plan on starting Beyond Shame (Beyond, #1) by Kit Rocha tomorrow afternoon.
