Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) (I had an MGA back in the day, G. As you can tell, I love cars but especially the early ones)

Mrs. Robertson - my kindergarten teacher. She is my all time favorite because she is my Mother.

Dr. Opp - undergraduate school. He was perhaps the most eccentric person I ever met and one never knew what would happen in his class.

Mrs. Wyckoff - high school. She was very strict and very sophisticated. After I left high school I realized what a great teacher she was even though everyone was afraid of her.

Three places in this world you would never visit (the North and South Pole don't count)

Lauri 1. The Mall of America, I believe it is in Minnesota. I mean how many malls can one go to and see the same stores?

2. Mount Everest, simply because I do not believe I could physically climb it.

3. North Korea, only because of the present political turmoil. I am sure I would enjoy the culture and the people. There are not many places I would not go.

Who are your three favorite fictional characters?

Your three most admired Presidents

message 78: by Bentley, Group Founder, Leader, Chief (last edited Apr 14, 2013 10:26AM) (new)

Bentley | 44291 comments Mod
Well that is hard because for me I do admire many of them for different reasons.

First, George Washington because he was the first after the Constitution was ratified and even more importantly for his help as Commander in Chief and General before he was President. Where would be without a successful outcome there. Also being first and being President at that time in history meant that you were forging new directions and policies that had never been in place before - so you were also not only the leader but a pioneer. That must have been a difficult job especially for a fledgling country.

Second would have to be John Adams - also for much of what he did leading up to the country getting off the ground and then being the one who had to follow in the footsteps of GW. John Adams probably did more and sacrificed more than any of our founding fathers and we owe him much.

FDR - for what he had to accomplish and did during one of the most trying periods in our American history - all while being disabled but never acting like he was.

And if I had a 4th - it would be Wilson despite his lackluster performance on civil rights - I thought he made the country think beyond itself. If I had a 5th - I would throw in Clinton.

OK my question: tell me three people who you believe are disliked the world over who are living and why?

message 79: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) Do you have two more? It is a hard questions when you admire many of our Presidents.

message 80: by Bentley, Group Founder, Leader, Chief (new)

Bentley | 44291 comments Mod

message 81: by Bentley, Group Founder, Leader, Chief (last edited Apr 14, 2013 10:34AM) (new)

Bentley | 44291 comments Mod
But here are two more which will surprise folks:

George W Bush - because when he left the presidency after two terms W decided that he was leaving the stage too and knew when to shut up and not hone in on what somebody else was doing. (I did not say anything about the presidency terms themselves) - But not getting into the middle of other people's decisions is a good thing unless you are asked by the person making the decision for input. If not asked, shut up.

Barack Obama - for stepping into one of the worst messes this country has ever found itself in after two wars and massive tax cuts probably since the great depression and for being able to make things better and not have us fall into an even bigger black hole. And keeping his cool at the same time.

My question still is:

Tell me three people who you believe are disliked the world over who are living and why?

message 82: by Jill (new)

message 84: by Jill (last edited Apr 14, 2013 10:41AM) (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) This one is easy:

Kim Jung Un - NK
Bashar al-Assad - Syria
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad - Iran

All for the same reason.....they are killing off their own people, they are threatening the world with WMD, and they are basically mentally unbalanced.

Three most disliked people who are no longer living

Those are three choices that I think many would have.

Ohhh that is harder....

1. Adolf Hitler
2. Chemical Ali in Iraq (Ali Hassan al-Majid)
3. Stalin

Alright let us get positive again:

Tell me the three most admired living women in the world

message 86: by Peter (new)

Peter Flom This sort of depends on what you mean by "most disliked" - disliked by the highest proportion, or most intensely disliked. But I'll just take a shot

Adolf Hitler
Stalin.
Pol Pot

(I would have put Mao, but many in China still think well of him - far more than think well of the three on my list).

Name the three most overrated presidents

I am going to have to place my question as the one:

Tell me the three most admired living women in the world

message 88: by Peter (last edited Apr 14, 2013 11:43AM) (new)

Peter Flom You beat me to it, Bentley, by 2 minutes. And we agree on 2 of 3! I have a book 1000 1,000 Years, 1,000 People Ranking the Men and Women Who Shaped the Millennium by Agnes Hooper Gottlieb byAgnes Hooper Gottlieb (no photo). It ranks the 1000 "most important" people between 1000 and 2000 AD. Each has a brief bio and a summary of the bio. For Stalin, the summary of the bio is one word: "Monster".

Do I hear hissing?????

This one is tough since it is worldwide.

1. Pope Francis - he has already began to gather admirers outside of the billion members of the Church
2. The Dalai Lama - a man of piety, wisdom, and serenity.
3. Billy Graham - he is so likeable and I have never doubted that his faith is from the heart.

Well, that's funny....all of mine were religious for some reason.

I don't think we have done this one.

That is very difficult:

1. Polk
2. James Monroe - always liked him
3. John Adams

Tell me three people (living) you would like to be pen pals with and why.

message 94: by Peter (last edited Apr 14, 2013 03:06PM) (new)

Peter Flom Interesting choices, Bentley. I would have picked Carter and Truman as two of mine. I don't know much about Polk.

In answer to yours:
Neal Stephenson - first, the guy can *write*. Plus he's full of ideas on all sorts of topics I find interesting.

Melvin Konner - Konner, author of one my favorite books: The Tangled Wing, seems not only learned but wise.

Steven Pinker - Another polymath, who seems to soak up new fields of knowledge the way you or I might buy new pants.

Neal Stephenson Neal Stephenson

The Tangled Wing Biological Constraints on the Human Spirit by Melvin Konner Melvin Konner(no cover)

Steven Pinker Steven Pinker

And your question makes mine easy:

Name three dead people who you would like to be pen-pals with (just assume they can answer!)

message 96: by Peter (new)

Peter Flom Getting the formatting right plays right into my learning disability - plus Goodreads doesn't make it easy, with it jumping around inside a post when you add a link, and jumping back to "link" from "photo". I guess I'll just have to check the text in the link.

As to your question

World peace
An end to hunger
Everyone being judged on the content of their character and not the color of their skin, their beauty, their sex, their gender, their age etc. (Hat tip to Martin Luther King, Jr).
