Ella Enchanted
question
Worst book to movie adaptations?

Ella enchanted was my favorite book as a kid. I have read it more than ten times. When I heard they were doing a movie about it I was so excited. Two of my friends and I went to see it in theaters because we all loved the novel. By the end of the movie we wanted to cry. It was horrible! They ruined something so amazing, we were devastated.

I saw the movie first. I thought the movie was silly. When I read the book, my dislike for the movie increased. I hate it when they don't tell the story right.
That was my absolute favorite book as a child. The movie should'nt even have the same title because they are SO different.
I know that most of you will disagree with me but I watched the film when I was growing up, and it was one of my favourites. So when i recently read the book, I didn't like it as much as the film because to me the film was the first, although I know it's not.

Yeah, and I guess if the author was ok with it, we can't really complain. It's still one of the "strangest" if not "worst" movie adaptations of a book

I loved the book the first time that I read it. it is totally one of my favorites. when I saw the movie, I was really disappointed. the book is so romantic and such, but the movie is so different. I wish that the movie were better so that I actually WANT to see the movie again. I love the ending of the book because it makes ella work hard to end the curse, but with the movie, it seems like she doesn't work as hard at all.
I saw the movie first, and read the book based off recommendations. The book was soooo much better! I couldn't believe it.
Top 5 worst movie/book adaptations for me are: The Golden Compass, David Lynch's Dune, Halle Berry's Catwoman, Ella Enchanted, and The Constant Gardener.

I liked both seperately. The book was a little darker, and more magical, which I really liked, and it was also truer to Cinderella. The movie was fun, and bright and cheery, so I liked both.
I loved the book Ella Enchanted as a child, and I re-read it every year. I saw the film a year after it came out and it was so preposterous that my friend--who also loves the book--and I couldn't stop laughing at how silly it was. I think of the two as separate stories.
I think the two things are fine as totally separate entities. I LOVE, absolutely fell in love with, the book. I just love what a strong, defiant girl Ella turned into because of the curse; I LOVED that she resisted it as long as possible to the point of being sick, because she was a fighter. I didn't get that all form the movie, or the awesome culture involved or the plot line. The movie has its charm for younger girls I think though...the movie is fine by itself if it's not associated with the book at all. As long as you have a girl read the book before seeing the movie, all is well.
Levine was all about historical accuracy...the film makers were all about trying to make a movie that most resembled Shrek.
On top of that, they take Mandy, who is an old woman in the book and turn her into the hip and young Minnie Driver.
And then there's the fairy, Lucinda. Good Lord. They took the wonderfully absent-minded fairy you loved to hate for her carelessness...and turned her into a stereotypical "oh no you di'in't" black character. *sigh*
And of course, Anne Hathaway who is 20+ years old with hips and a rack playing young Ella...ughhh...

I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE the book, but I completely agree....the movie was ATROCIOUS!!! If they would have toned down the corniness to the movie and geared the movie more towards adults then even though it's a children's/teen book, it would have been more believable!
I know any book requires screen adaptation, but there's a limit. The movie Ella Enchanted turned something clever, original and interesting into something shallow, cliche and boring. Though I have to admit I had a rip roaring good time roasting it with friends. So I suppose in the grand scheme of things the movie had some merit.

I've read the book SOOOO many times and I still LOVE it!!!! But the movie was aweful!!! I refuse to ever watch it again!!!
But I think it would be cool if they made GCL book Fairest a movie as long as they didn't mess it up.

I hated almost everything about the movie. I feel like it was a fine kids movie by itself, but if you put the label Ella Enchanted on it, it has to be Ella Enchanted, and the movie just wasn't. The best parts were cut out, including the part that makes Ella Ella: giving up Char in order to save him and her country that selflessness combined with her desire to be free and her independence is who Ella is, and we don't see enough of that in the movie.
Ok, if you love the book, and absolutely hate the movie, stop reading this now. Trust me, you'll want to.
I first saw the movie when I was 5 or 6. I did not know it was a book. I loved the movie, I watched it tons. And I do stilI love it. I don't know why. I FINALLY got around to reading the book in 5th or 6th (those two years tend to blend togeather, so I don't know which) when I checked it out from my school library. And I have to say... I didn't really like the book all that much. In my list of Gail Carson Levine books, it is actually twoards the bottom. (The Two Princesses of Bamarre is on the tippy top. It will always be my favorite. Ever is second.)
I guess because I had watched the movie so much, by the time I read the book, I was like "Where's *fill in the blank*?" I definately would have read the book first if I had known there was one.

When I heard that Ella Enchanted was going to be made into a movie, I was excited and couldn't wait to see one of my favorite books played out on the screen in living color. Oh, the disappointment! The only things that the movie had in common with the book were the title, the names of the main characters, and Ellas curse. And where did that stupid snake come from anyway?
I shouldn't have been surprised, though, since what adaptation can compare to how someone imagines the book when they are reading it?

I first came across Ella Enchanted as a little girl, listening to it as a book on tape. I was pretty much obsessed from there. I got it out of the library more times than I can count.
I was excited at the thought of a movie coming out, but when I heard they were casting Anne Hathoway, my enthusiasm dropped significantly. As much as I like her as an actress, I knew she was wrong for the part. When the movie was released, I wasn't really at the point in my life where I bothered to "go to the movies," simply because I didn't have money. That may very well have been a good thing. I head bad things from trusted friends about the film, and decided I simply wouldn't bother to pursue seeing it myself.
I came across the movie by accident once on TV. My mom and I were on vacation, and we decided it would be a good way to spend the evening in our stop-over hotel. Well, we were wrong. I spent the whole time complaining about what was wrong with it. At the end, I was so mad, I cried. It wasn't RIGHT. It wasn't Ella Enchanted. It was a movie with the same name!
I was later forced to watch it again while taking care of a group of girls, and none of them knew the difference, having not read the book. They all thought it was fine, but didn't really care for all my disparaging comments. I promised them each $5 if they read it and could give me a list of differences. Best $30 I've ever spent.

I loved the book!I reread it so many times as a girl. The movie.....I am not sure what they were thinking, but it is nothing like the book. Such a waste, it could have been an amazing fantasy movie instead it was well.... a bit of a joke.
Worst in the sense that they are very different. I saw the movie before I read the book. After I finished reading the book, my first reaction/thought was that it was a coincidence that the movie had the same name as the book. The two were so different that I couldn't believe that the movie was supposed to be based on the book! Very confusing for me at the time...
I read Ella Enchanted about a year before the movie came out. Love it.
Then I heard the movie was on it's way. I was so excited! I was not fun to sit beside through that film. I'm very sure I grumbled all the way to the end.
