Thank you April Ann. It looks like Jackie "The Librarian" tagged the book for me as the "Henry Reed" series by Keith Robertson.

Yea Jackie the L! I called up that site and that jpeg of the front cover rang all sorts of bells in the ol' bean. Thank you.

It involved a bespectacled boy whom first visits his grandparents for the entire summer vacation. He meets a local girl and they share a number of adventures. In the first book, there was a mean next door neighbor who was overly protective of his lawn, to the point of warning off intruding deer with gunfire (it turned out to be a new variety of lawn grass, short and springy, I recall), which was caught on film by the kids as an intent to poach.
In another book, the grandparents and the 2 teenagers head out on a cross country camping trip (I remember they were in the Southwest at one point).
Yet another book had them visiting England, an episode I remember nothing of except that they were driving around in the original “Mini” Cooper, which they referred to as a “Peanut Roaster”.
One of the last books had the teenagers as near-adults, vying with some pretentious upscale neighborhood kids. I remember that by this time, the teenagers were old enough to be driving legally.
All these books had illustrations, by the same artist. The style seemed very distinctive, like Louis Darling’s (Beverly Cleary’s illustrator). And I don’t remember them as “light” fare – they were probably a bit longer than , say , “Charlotte’s Web”.
