Is anyone re-reading this in prep for the movie? And once the movie is seen, let's compare and discuss.

It's been so long since I've read it. I'm quite critical of movie interpretations. I wonder how this next one will stack up?

Mochaspresso I saw the preview for it in the movies. While I am not the biggest fan of the book, the movie preview did seem good. I think I could be game for rereading it and comparing it to the movie when it comes out.

It's not a long book and I'm curious to hear what the thoughts will be.

Míceál Ó Gealbháin I reread it about 6 months ago. I didn't realize it was being made into a movie again until recently. I hope it is a better production than the last undertaking. I had high hopes for the Redford/Farrow film but their acting was stale and rigid. Looks like a good cast in the new film. Has to be better than Clive Owen as Hemingway and Nicol Kidman as Gellhorn. Talk about missed casting. Woody Allen got it right in Midnight In Paris.

Nahid Yes, i read this for the first time whilst studying A-level English Literature. I loved it, but never got round to re-reading it. However, i can't wait to watch the film, i love Leonardo Dicaprio <3. So i'm definitly going to re-read the book before i watch the film :-). I always find film adaptations lacking in comparison to the book, so let's see how this fares :)!

Zayne K. I had the book sitting on my shelf for a while, but never really got around to reading it. Now that the movie's coming out soon, I finished it a few days ago and really enjoyed it. I can't think of someone better to play Gadsby than Leo DiCaprio. :)

Alicia That is my plan and will enjoy the discussion.

William I've seen all three versions of Gatsby in the movies, including the one with Alan Ladd. I do not have high hopes for this new one, but I'll just have to wait and see. Right?

Loved Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris. But I like most of his films.

Me too.

Jools I loved Midnight in Paris..... :)

I read Gatsby at least twice a year to be honest. I love this book and I am very excited to see it come alive on the big screen.

I think this re-make of the movie is going to be awesome. Either people will love it or hate it, combining the current music with the period costumes and extravagant sets, same as "Moulin Rouge". I liked the previous Great Gatsby movies and I've read the book twice, I wouldn't say it is my favorite book, though. I am actually reading the Cliff Notes on the book right now to perhaps gain more insight on the motivations of the characters.

Cateline Oh! I just downloaded it to my kindle to read in prep for the film. The previews look great.

Julie I'm going to re-read this in preparation for the movie. I love the book, I've read it 3x's in the past. The first movie with Robert Redford (whom I love) put me to sleep. I'm very hopeful for this version. Everyone seems well cast.

I'm also very critical of movie interpretations and I'll likely dissect it after I see it.

Actually the first movie starred Alan Ladd.

Julie My apologies. I did not see The Great Gatsby of 1926 or 1949. The 1974 version put me to sleep ;-)

Julie Woody Allen's films are hit or miss for me but Midnight in Paris was spot on. A terrific movie.

William I didn't know there was a movie version in 1926, so I guess I haven't seen them all.

William Kevin wrote: "I thought the movie preview looked like a travesty - which is what I have come to expect from Baz Luhrman. I'll give it a miss and just read the book again."

That was my reaction as well, Kevin, but I'll still see the flick. I thought his Romeo and Juliet was horrible.

Terry ~ Huntress of Erudition Responding to Julie' post from 3 days ago: I love to dissect movies, so this should be fun!

Deb I'm really excited as well. I've just finished "revisiting" the book and posted my review/experience. I have a completely different view of the book in general having read it now vs when I read it in high school 20 some years ago.
Very curious about the movie. I can just imagine myself grading the film from the comfort of my bucket theater seat. ;o)

Laurel I just bought a copy to reread. It has been years since I read it. High hopes for Leo as Gatsby, not so sure about Daisy.

Maren Madi I did. I'm going to see the movie on my birthday!

Heather Janesky YES! My WineClub with a Reading problem is re-reading it this month, then doing a girls night out for the film. I've loved this book since high school, but Baz's vision of the Gatsby world is Much more glamorous and Fabulous than my mind's eye:)

Terry ~ Huntress of Erudition Laurel wrote: "I just bought a copy to reread. It has been years since I read it. High hopes for Leo as Gatsby, not so sure about Daisy."

I'm not so sure about the actress playing Daisy either. She doesn't seem to have much life in her (going by the movie previews) at least not that would inspire Gatsby to create this whole lifestyle to impress her.

Robert Spake I just read it for the first time in preparation for the movie. I liked the book, I'm looking forward to the movie as I'm a big fan of Leonardo DiCaprio and Baz Lurhman. I find I usually like film adaptations of books as long as I accept them on my own terms.

Míceál Ó Gealbháin Saw some previews and the scenes depicted in the tv commercials do not seem to be of any scenes I recall from the book. My hopes for a good adaptation are dwindling.

Shelley I agree with Julie about Woody Allen.

Just wanted to mention for those interested that there's a post on Gatsby in HuffPo today.
