The story is not going to be boring.

Irene, you are co-leading the discussion yes?

Meg (megvt) | 3069 comments What will be interesting for me personally, is that with some of my reluctant readers at school I will start with the movie version of the book first so that they get the gist of the book and then read it. It is a great hook for some. Now I will see if it works for me too.

Megan M | 267 comments I read the first chapter last night and am surprised how much I enjoyed it. The writing is outstanding. Happy reading.

Great idea, Meg. I hope it works for your students! :o)

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) I started doing that. Going to see/watching the movie version and then reading the book if I liked the movie.

Irene | 4577 comments Meg wrote: "We would love to have you Madhavi.

Yes, but I have never co-facilitated before, and only facilitated one discussion here, so I am not sure how exactly to go about it.

Meg (megvt) | 3069 comments How about you start with the first reading section? then we can see how to proceed from there?

Irene | 4577 comments OK, That gives me until May to get that section read.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) Once you start reading you won't want put down the book.

Lisa Julianna (lisajulianna) | 80 comments I may try to join all of you in reading this one. I am in college and so not sure how much Fun reading I will get done but I'm going to try it. Now I have a stupid question...LOL! Is it going to matter what version I read? I see you ladies talking about different versions so I want to make sure I get the right one. I was going to try to get it on my kindle, Do you think that would be ok?

message 63: by Meg (new) - rated it 3 stars

Meg (megvt) | 3069 comments You can read any version on any device. We would love to have you. What we were talking about was the HBO version as a comparison to the book.

message 64: by Lisa Julianna (new)

Lisa Julianna (lisajulianna) | 80 comments ahh ok Thanks Meg for clearing that up for me. :~)

Madhavi (madhavij) | 32 comments Thanks Guys.I had finished Book-1 ages ago. I have started reading Book-2 (finished a chapter). Last time when I left reading book-2,I guess I had an overdose of the series [:)]. Now, that I have picked it up again.. I find it hard to put it down.

@Jayme (the ghost reader):- It's not always that the story becomes boring.. i just tend to leave a book in the middle and move on to another book (whichever i'm excited about) finish it and come back to this one.

Megan M | 267 comments Not to brag, but I just ordered the Kindle Paperwhite and it is equipped with Amazon X-Ray. For those of you that don't know, Amazon X-Ray is basically an encyclopedia of a book’s characters, places, etc. This will surely assist with reading Game of Thrones, considering all the people and places involved in the story. I am done bragging. :-)

Jenny (narcisse) | 209 comments Oh man, I use that x-ray feature constantly for the A Song of Ice and Fire books. Definitely useful for those times when you're like, "Who is this guy again??" It's so much easier to find stuff. I repurchased this whole series in ebook format just for features like the x-ray and search, and the ability to highlight and put notes everywhere for important stuff I want to remember or be able to find later for references without actually defacing an expensive book. And so I don't have to carry the giant hardcovers around. :)

Meg (megvt) | 3069 comments Uh oh Megan, looks like you volunteered to help lead the discussion!!! :)Just kidding, but all of your input will be greatly appreciated. I am very curious about Kindle Paperwhite and Amazon X-Ray

message 69: by Anna (new) - rated it 2 stars

Anna I noticed there is Amazon X-Ray for Kindle Touch as well :) Although mine is grey at the moment, but it might be because I'm still on the sample (for the 5 book bundle the sample is pretty big...).

Oh, and I'm liking it so far. I'm glad this group read came along and that I decided to try despite the negative I'd read. I think I might end up liking this a lot... :)

I am getting more tempted with the 8 week battery life and the end of chapter time feature.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) I had to refer to the index pages in Game of Thrones to keep everyone straight in the first book.

Cathy | 51 comments I'm in! I have been watching the serie on HBO, and everyone who has read the book/series, says it follows the book(s) closely. However, everyone says the book(s) are much better!

I am reading this on a Kindle, also. Have you heard from any other Kindle readers?

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) I didn't read it on kindle. I read the hard copy.

Anna, has anyone assisted you with page numbers vs. chapters? I am also planning to read the book on my Kindle.

Anna Cathy wrote: "Anna, has anyone assisted you with page numbers vs. chapters? I am also planning to read the book on my Kindle."

Not really... The problem is that there are no chapter numbers. I was going to suggest (but haven't gotten around to it) that maybe someone with a book could add like the last sentences of the chapter or the first ones of the next one. Or somehow indicate what part we are discussing. The first weeks have the character's name on it, but I guess it gets harder when they repeat. In any case I'm not buying physical books when I don't have to, so hopefully we find a solution.

message 79: by Cathy (new) - added it

Cathy | 51 comments One solution is to get a hard copy from my local public library and do a quick match. I have to return a book in a couple of days. If I get this done, I will send you a msg.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) The character names are the separate chapters. I have a physical book. I have it at home. I can help you and email the cutoffs to you or something.

message 81: by Anna (new) - rated it 2 stars

Anna That would be awesome! I knew this couldn't be too hard :) I would really appreciate the e-mails, since I live in France and have no idea if I can get this in the library (or where the library is for that matter... or how the library works here...).

Thanks,, Jayme, I mistakenly sent you that email and you are awfully nice to offer assistance! I am going to run by my local library and compare the book to my Kindle edition. Can't wait to get started.

LOL. Yes, let's devise a simple solution. I will follow up with you soon.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) I can post it on here if anyone needs to compare.

Anna, I just posted the Kindle schedule. I went to a local branch library, and all the copies were on the "Hold" shelf. I looked for a big, fat paperback book. It was the third one I looked at! So, I quickly jotted down the page numbers and then put the book back for the future reader!

Jayme, thanks again! I have posted the Kindle schedule.

message 88: by Anna (new) - rated it 2 stars

Anna Thanks! That's awesome! Also, a friend of mine noticed the discussion and pointed me to a website that might be helpful.

Maybe these can be used if we go on to the next books. Then it doesn't matter which version you're reading :)

message 89: by Anna (new) - rated it 2 stars

Anna Oh well, the site actually has a page table! So, no matter how we do it, I have no problems :)

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) Awww. and here I would have had something to do for the next hour. Oh well.

Rebecca Thank you Cathy. I just got the Kindle Paper White so I will be reading and can follow easily.

Meg (megvt) | 3069 comments So I was on the plane going home from TX and this woman was reading it. I was dying to ask her if she was in our reading group but she got off the plane too quickly.
Anyone on United from Houston to Newark Sunday evening? How funny would that be?

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) That would be pretty cool.

Sally (claricat) | 7 comments Yippee! I am reading a newer paperback version and the page numbers did not match the original reading list, but they do match on the new Kindle list posted. BRAVO! I also love the website that Anna posted. I love going back to summaries after I have read...especially if something was confusing! THANKS for sharing!

message 95: by Janice (JG) (new)

Janice (JG) I have read all but the last (published) book of the series (A Dance With Dragons), which I have sitting in my Kindle waiting til I get around to it.

I read all of the available books before I watched the series on DVD, and while the series is done very well, I would recommend reading the books first. That way, you can imagine the characters and geography for yourself first. I noticed that my images of some things differed greatly from the HBO series (such as my vision of Catelyn is very different from the character they cast as Catelyn, Michelle Fairley).

I would like to join the discussion occasionally, and I will be sure to use the link to the chapter summaries so that I don't give away any spoilers.

I will say that this first book, Game of Thrones is probably the best of the series... but that is likely because it is all new and fascinating information about a wonderful new adventure : )

message 96: by Gin (new) - rated it 4 stars

Gin Tadvick (ginski) | 31 comments So I just got my book yesterday and haven't started reading yet. I have also not watched the series as I want to have a fresh perspective or an untainted one. Am looking forward to this sooooo much. Thanks for the Kindle reading schedule. I seem to be reading more on it lately and my TBR pile is literally and figuratively growing. (Don't let my husband in my office!)(Actually - if it keeps growing, he won't be able to get in my office. )

Cathie (catitude) | 41 comments I will be reading only. I started it last night; it's good.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) You will want to watch the series by the end of the book. :)

Cathie (catitude) | 41 comments I don't get HBO so it doesn't matter what I want, lol. I've heard great things about it :-).

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) You can watch them on sidereel.com or hulu for free. There are other sites too.
