The “Cutthroat Competitor Cupcake” is coming!

This is a cupcake that’s NOT fooling around.
Hard to conquer, but your BAPs will surely mound.

You thought the “Triple Threat” was hard to earn?
This one’s NOT vinegar; yet, neither is it sauterne.

This cupcake counts as ‘cuatro’ – which translates to four.
With a 350,000-word-endurance, these books are worth tons more.

This Captain will give you four BAPs to really increase your points.
After all that page turning, this isn’t one that disappoints.

Announcement:

With regards to “Cutthroat Competitor Cupcakes,” 350,000 words = 1,400 pages.

However, keep in mind that for some of the longer books they squeeze more words on per page. We go by word count first, when we can find it, then refer to WorldCat.

Sooooo... that is why sometimes you will see an 800 or 900 page book count as a “Cutthroat Competitor.”

Also, your Captain has a link to a list of approved books, to which we will continue to add. Thus far they are:
An American Tragedy
Atlas Shrugged)
A Breath of Snow and Ashes
The Civil War, Vol. 1: Fort Sumter to Perryville
The Count of Monte Cristo
A Dance With Dragons
The Fiery Cross
A Storm of Swords
It
Les Misérables
Sacajawea
Voyager
The Wise Man's Fear

Starting a very big book: Believing the Lie (Inspector Lynley, #17) by Elizabeth George by Elizabeth George. New author for me so hopefully its a good book.

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6400 comments I have sent Puzzle #No 135, and just about to send in #136.

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6400 comments Ooh, thanks for doing those challenging puzzles, Barb. I would have no idea how to even make a start on them.

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments Remember everyone that I've been testing the Cryptograms for Captain Cupcake so they're already done. ;)

message 1411: by Diane L (new)

Diane L Just wanted to say thanks again for all of the suggestions for Stacy. She went through your responses, made a list and came home from the library with an armful of books. She was taking the baby home to put to bed and then curling up on the couch with the first one last night.

message 1412: by Barb (new)

Barb Yeeehawww team! Just checked the newest Sunday update and we're now in FIFTH PLACE!! We're only 20 books behind the team in fourth place, but that's do-able, right? :)

I've read a few Inspector Lynley books and I've liked them. I hope you do too!

I knew that, but I forgot ... again :) Ah well, I got a chance to strain my brain to remember what the ??? stood for!

The jigsaw puzzles? They're not hard to do, just VERY time-consuming LOL

I had trouble getting into it.

Barb Did you finish it, or give up on it? I've only read 2-3 in that series, and I found them a little hard to get into as well, but eventually, they end up drawing me in.

It might help, too, if you start with book #1 in the series. There's a LOT of character development that is explained as the books progress.

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6400 comments Wow, fifth place. Go Team. Our Mango is doing a celebrationary Tango!

message 1421: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments GO MANGO TANGO! NOW.... get back to reading. Fourth isn't that far ahead of us :)

message 1422: by Jane (new)

Jane | 705 comments I was out all day yesterday and didn't read. I have a list of books I need to read for some challenges this month but I just can't seem to get into them. But I wanted to read something in bed last night so I bought Percy Jackson 3 which I knew I would like and finished it this morning.

message 1423: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments Yes those are fantastic books, Jane! :)

message 1424: by Lisa Kay (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Evana, it looks like Harlequin has started a new series that your daughter-in-law might like: Heartwarming. They are advertising it as 'wholesome.' And they have a free book on Kindle and Nook:
The Husband School by Kristine Rolofson

http://www.amazon.com/The-Husband-Sch...

message 1425: by Karla (new)

Karla Evana, I hope your daughter-in-law found a few books she liked from our lists. I'm curious to know which she chose to read and what she thought of them.

message 1426: by [deleted user] (new)

Gotta take a break from reading. Having trouble finding a good book to read.

message 1427: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Field (nicolefield) | 1778 comments Hey guys, I've been out for a week with the flu from hell, but now I've finished my first book since then and I'm ready to catch up with those reading One Day.

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6400 comments I think that flu has been going around from Melbourne to Sydney, Nicole. Hope you are feeling better now.

message 1429: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Field (nicolefield) | 1778 comments Just have a cough left that I'm trying to get rid of. Otherwise, feeling not too terrible.

message 1430: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments Awwww, Nancy! Have you read the Percy Jackson books? They're fun and easy reads! And I'm enjoying the Sookie Stackhouse books and the Harry Dresden books right now too. Maybe try one of the buddy reads going on ???

Hope you feel better Nicole!

message 1431: by [deleted user] (new)

I've read all of the Dresden books and i don't have the Percy Jackson books on my tablet. I've just read so many books that i'm getting burn out of reading.

message 1432: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments Oh noes! :( I feel like we just got you back!

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6400 comments Yeah and we need everybody reading, reading, reading to keep our coveted No 5 position in the Challenge.

message 1434: by [deleted user] (new)

I guess i'll read some more books

message 1435: by Nicole (new)

That's the problem. I'm not sure what i'm in the mood for. I get this every now and then.

message 1439: by Barb (new)

Barb Yeah, it's happened to me too. Maybe you could just take a day or two off reading and see if that helps?

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6400 comments I think it happens to everyone now and then. I usually change genres or read something I know I am going to love from a author that always delivers for me. Or go and watch some good TV drama for a while.

message 1441: by Nicole (last edited Sep 16, 2013 07:21PM) (new)

Nicole Field (nicolefield) | 1778 comments I watched a lot of TV while I was sick, Nancy, and it's definitely helped. Now I can barely look at Scrubs. Don't get me wrong, it was funny, but 3 seasons in a week is a bit much ;)

Thanks for the well wishes, Barb :)

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6400 comments Sorry team, I've been working on Puzzle #144 for two days and just can't get it out. My sister is visiting till Monday so I will have no more time till then to work on it so if somebody wants to jump in, feel free. Thanks.

message 1443: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments Did and sent #144.

Typing them out in Excel and sorting made it so much easier... and the benefit is... the repeats AUTO-POPULATE once you start typing them... so less work.

But man alive my brain is NUMB!

message 1444: by Jane (new)

Jane | 705 comments Anybody know anything about October challenge? Is there one and any hint to what it is about?

I just like trying to decide what to read next month in good time, even though my decided lists always change.

I know I am going to read som books with witches and ghosts for 2 other challenges and a few shorter books during Dewey's Readaton.
I also need to start planning for books for all my challenges as there is only 3 months left in the year.

message 1445: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments It's been posted in the captains group for questions and modifications, Jane.

It's mostly a readathon, but I'll tell you that your books about witches and ghosts will help with the other part of the challenge.

It's also only running from Oct4- Oct19, so you can go ahead and plan anything you want for outside those dates.

It'll be posted officially soon, once the captains are all clear and no more changes are made!

message 1446: by Jane (new)

Jane | 705 comments Thanks Steven :-)

message 1447: by Jane (new)

Jane | 705 comments I am going away on holiday from late 14th to 19th of October without internet connection ( a lake in Sweden)
But hopefully I will be able to read a lot and I should get back in time to do an update before it ends.

message 1448: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments If you're worried about that part Jane, or if you think you might not make it back, just make sure you do an update on the 14th, and try to plan to get all your books for the Treasure Hunt part in before then.

The good thing is, the Treasure Hunt is only 15 books total. So that won't take as long :)

After that, i'll be just read read read!

message 1449: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments I'll be posting the information later today as soon as Sonia declares it "official!"

message 1450: by Jane (new)

Jane | 705 comments looking forward to see it.
