I did it for the first time today too. If you click on (some HTML is ok) there is a key but it goes like this
Type < write the word spoiler>
Write your comment.
When you are finished type <\ the word spoiler>
Post your comment.
I would do a test post to see if it works ( you can always delete it- which is what I did ). Can't wait to read your comments.

Otherwise I absolutely loved this book. Unlike so many books, I couldn't read into what was going to happen next. So many issues raised to think about. I can't wait to hear and discuss it further with you all.

Was this a retelling of The Scarlet Letter? People, in their reviews, allude to that yet Hillary Jordan only mentioned that the seed for the book came from a comment her uncle made.
I identified strongly with Hannah in that I had a similar religious upbringing to her. I even asked the same questions. What about the dinosaurs? How did they fit in to the timeline? I remember telling my mother one time that I felt like God was a puppeteer and I a puppet on a string. (She was aghast, btw! Queue in Hannah's mother.) I was also rebellious in that I did not accept bland answers and forged my own way. I think that Hannah was much stronger than I am.
I liked that the book was not pushing religion, but questioning it. I know some people thought the book was too religious.
I also didn't care for (view spoiler)
Overall, I really enjoyed the book. I wasn't going to read it until jaxnsmom and Connie bent my arm. I'm so glad they did!

Yeah, I've gotten to that point now. Darn it. (view spoiler)

I understand Hannah’s questions of faith based on the dogma with which she was reared, (view spoiler)

Lynn, I felt the same way as both of your spoilers, in almost the same words!

To me that's the same thing Janice, it wasn't developed properly therefore it seemed out of character.

I didn't find it too religious exactly for that reason, it asked questions rather than forcing a view point on you. Apart from a really interesting story the book got me thinking about issues more than any other book in a long time.

I agree - I sort of felt that most of the last section didn't really fit which is why I gave it 4 vs 5 stars. However, overall I thought it was a great story and would highly recommend it. So happy the group chose it as a buddy read as I might not have read it otherwise.

In the back of the book, she does say that the idea of the book came from her uncle's comment. also in the interview with the author at the end of the book she mentions that although the books starts like a futuristic scarlet letter- the 2 stories then become very different. i have no idea as i tend to avoid most of the classics including the scarlet letter lol

i agree this was a great book- won't be forgetting this one anytime soon.

Agreed, I thought it was needed to help balance the book.

I kept picturing the character Dolores Umbridge from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix when I read about Mrs. Henley. If they ever made this into a movie, that actress would be perfect! LOL!

On the home stretch. Errands have pulled me away from this book way too often.

agreed- I wanted to slap all of these people!

Hmmm... interesting observation!

@ Almeta and Janice (view spoiler)
@ Almeta - Maybe the locked rooms and claustrophic events were Jordan's way of getting Hannah and the reader to "think about OUTSIDE the box".

I read The Scarlet Letter last year. I did not really see any real comparison between the two stories except that Hannah and the woman in TSL would never tell who the father of the baby was and some minor referrence to Aiden's "suffering" because he lived a lie.
You should read The Scarlet Letter. Just because it is considered a classic does not mean it is not a good story. I do not remember having a hard time getting through it. Don't you want to know what the scarlet letter IS? You will be surprised.

Was this a retelling of The S..."
I respect the classics- unfortunately my eyes tend to glaze over when I try to read them lol- of course, there are exceptions- I really like Shakespeare for instance and really enjoyed to kill a mockingbird. I actually have several on my tbr and just might have to add the scarlet letter to my list ;)

Yeah, what's up with Pastor Easter. Did Jordan give up on developing a sub-plot? (view spoiler)
Janice, you saw something I did not.
