I've enjoyed a season or three :)

What is the twist/mix-up for the upcoming season?

The cast is made up of returning players (non winners only) that were voted onto the show by the public. And its a great set of people.

Bill | 1596 comments Anyone been watching Fear The Walking Dead? Can't wait for all hell to break loose.

message 304: by Kat (new)

Kat | 1178 comments Ok, stupid question time.

In some other groups I'm in, mentioned books are not linked with their title (like this: Half a War), but as a thumbnail of the cover.

How do you do that? Is there a button for that?

Didn't want to ask in the other group, as I seem to be the only one not doing this over there.

(I like text links better, I can't read the title on those thumbnails)

Lindsay | 546 comments EDIT: -snipped-

Ctgt below nailed it

message 306: by Kat (new)

Kat | 1178 comments Yes, thank you!

I thought there was an easy button for it that I didn't find.

SO they're all copying and pasting links and images... bleh, too much work. I'll stick with text links! :)

message 307: by Ctgt (new)

Ctgt | 629 comments Kat, do you use the "add book/author" link at the top of the comment box? If you do, there is also an option at the bottom of the results box where you can change from text link to the cover.

Thanks for that - now I feel silly :)

message 309: by Kat (new)

Kat | 1178 comments Oooooooooooooooooooooh.

The secret button!

Thank you Ctgt!

message 310: by Ctgt (new)

Ctgt | 629 comments No need to feel silly Lindsay. It took quite a long time for me to figure out some of the features and I'm pretty sure I still don't know all the shortcuts.

You're welcome Kat.

Kat | 1178 comments Games of Astraeus (Akallian Tales, #2) by Jeramy Goble

Just to try it out. Hah, I'm no longer a noob!

message 312: by Dara (new)

Dara (cmdrdara) So I'm playing my first session ever of D&D tomorrow. Any tips for a newbie?

message 313: by Kat (new)

Kat | 1178 comments Yes. If your character comes across a mysterious book, DO NOT elect to read from it aloud.

Learned this the hard way.

Take biscuits (cookies) for the group.

message 317: by Geoff (new)

Geoff (geoffgreer) Alternatively, DO read all books and live dangerously

I hate the bookcover option. I wish they'd remove it.

1) Don't worry too much about making mistakes. Just try to have fun.

2) Embrace your character. Don't think: "How would I react to this?" instead try to think: "What would my character do?"

Dara (cmdrdara) Rob wrote: "2) Embrace your character. Don't think: "How would I react to this?" instead try to think: "What would my character do?"

I think that's going to be the hardest part at first. I think I'll have to play my character a bit to really get to know her. I'm so used to video games and choosing to do something based on the stats it will give me rather than really role playing it.

(I'm playing as a wood elf ranger, level 6 in case anyone was curious.)

message 321: by Rob, Mayor of Ghost Town (new)

Rob (robzak) | 6375 comments Mod
It is a change. Personally I've found the more the dramatic the differences in the character from myself the easier it is to keep them straight. And often the more fun.

I get to "do" and say things I wouldn't normally say. In college I played a Lawful evil character. I cackled while I slaughtered a village. I hated everyone in my party. It was a fun time.

message 322: by Dara (new)

Dara (cmdrdara) Well, my first session went alright. I was pretty nervous and I know I messed a few things up in combat but I'm still learning. I was pretty useful to help the group sneak by some enemies. There are two groups that play at my comic book store and I'm the only girl in mine. I wish the characters were a bit more diverse. There are two barbarians, two wizards, two rogues, and a bard (and me, the ranger).

That sort of thing is common among "random" groups I think. And the ones you mentioned tend to be the most popular classes.

I'm not sure about in newer D&D, but we always tried to keep a more balanced group of tank, melee dps, ranged dps and heals.

Thankfully we had a few players would be willing to play other stuff if needed.

I never played a wizard before joining them, but they lost their sorcerer and asked I play some kind of caster. In the past I tended to favor melee dps as a rogue, a warrior and a melee ranger. It ended up being a lot of fun though, especially when I leveled up. Fireball is Xd6 where X is your caster level. ^_^

But our group was Barbarian, Rogue, Cleric, Paladin with an occasional Bard (until he moved and stopped coming) so we had a nice balance of abilities.

message 325: by Dara (new)

Dara (cmdrdara) I'd like more balance but like you said, with a random group of people it's pretty unlikely. There's a second group but I don't know what their makeup is. I'm hoping the group gels a bit more but again, it's hard to do that with kind of random people. And I'll be out for at least a week after I have my bunion surgery on the 30th.

message 326: by Dara (new)

Dara (cmdrdara) So the current campaign wrapped up last night and I played a grand total of 2 sessions with my ranger (though I kicked serious amounts of ass for the one battle at level 10). In 2 weeks we start a new campaign with new groups and everyone is level 1 with new characters. I'm looking forward to this and changing DMs. Not that I didn't like the old one but the new one is more focused on roleplaying and he runs a bit of an easier game with less combat. I'm making a druid inspired by Keyleth on Critical Role and Phoebe Buffay from Friends. I'm really excited.

Kat | 1178 comments I signed up for a French conversation evening at the local community college tonight.

My current employer was very impressed with my language skills when they interviewed me for the job, but I've not had a single chance to use any of them since I started almost 2 years ago.

Am also in need of new contacts my own age, as I hang out with elderly pensioners too much. Not that I mind, but they keep forgetting I'm still in my thirties. The other day they suggested that I join them signing up for the waiting list of this new fancy retirement home development. They had forgotten that I have another 30-odd years before I need to be on that list...

...so I'm off to (hopefully) meet some young-ish French speakers, alors!

message 329: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 1582 comments Let us know how it goes Kat. That seems like a great way to keep up on language skills.

message 330: by Kat (new)

Kat | 1178 comments It was great! We had wine and tarte!

But... it was me and 8 pensioners. So the result is mixed.

message 331: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 1582 comments Ha it figures....But I'm glad it wasn't all bad.

Kat | 1178 comments Going to try a local neighbourhood project organised by the church next. They have a meeting on the 12th.

Also going to try a choir, as I really miss my Gospel choir in London.

Peter | 153 comments Is it just me or did the discussions not used to be organized by author? Something is different here...

message 334: by Rob, Mayor of Ghost Town (new)

Rob (robzak) | 6375 comments Mod
That was my doing. It's only certain authors. We were getting a bit big on the number of sections I thought.

Sanderson had four sections. Butcher and Abercrombie had two. So I consolidated them.

message 335: by Peter (new)

Peter | 153 comments Ah I see. And yeah, I agree that it makes sense. I just couldn't figure out why everything seemed different all of the sudden. (x

message 336: by Kat (new)

Kat | 1178 comments How odd - NABCC has disappeared from my discussions overview.

Tried searching for it by name from the groups page, but it didn't come up in the results. I had to open my friends list, click on Rob and then scroll down to Rob's groups to find my way back here.

What's going on with that?

message 337: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 1582 comments Same here - it only shows a few groups and I can only find this one if I go to my groups page. Grrr...

Rob (robzak) | 6375 comments Mod
Discussions overview? I don't believe I'm familiar with that.

I just have all threads here send me emails, so I tend to follow that back. I also have the unread page (https://www.goodreads.com/topic/unrea...) bookmarked for quick access.

message 339: by Kat (new)

Kat | 1178 comments Are you voting in the choice awards?

Every time I log in I get this banner inviting me to vote. Honestly, I'm not qualified to vote for books I haven't read in the romance or horror sections...

What about you guys? If you're voting, do you limit yourself to stuff you've read? Or are you supporting other books/authors/genres based on other criteria?

message 340: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay | 546 comments I stick to the categories I know. Typically that means Fantasy, SF, YA and Comics. I do read Horror and Romance, but not widely enough to have an informed opinion.

message 341: by Rob, Mayor of Ghost Town (new)

Rob (robzak) | 6375 comments Mod
I vote for books in categories I've read. I wrote in one book.

message 342: by Kat (new)

Kat | 1178 comments Ooooh, which one did you write in?

message 343: by Mark (new)

Mark | 482 comments Just voted in fantasy and comics.

message 344: by Ashley (new)

Ashley | 28 comments Felicia Day's book is in humor, so I also voted in that category.

message 345: by Bill (new)

Bill | 1596 comments I only voted in two categories. Wish I read more nominees.

Fantasy - The Autumn Republic
YA F+SF - Uprooted

message 346: by Sky (new)

Sky | 1291 comments I voted for Liar's Key in Fantasy :P

Nemesis Games in SF.

One of my goals for the year was to read more non-fiction, which is totally failing, as I've read none! (was reminded when I looked at the non-fiction category)

message 347: by Scott (new)

Scott (thekeeblertree) | 1049 comments Yeah reading through the categories made me realize two things about my reading habits: 1. I pretty much only read fantasy these days and 2. I don't read many newly released books

I also voted for Autumn Republic, thought it was a kick ass end to that trilogy

message 348: by Dara (new)

Dara (cmdrdara) I only vote in categories that have books that I've read. So Felicia Day in humor and NK Jemisin in Fantasy.

message 349: by Rob, Mayor of Ghost Town (new)

Rob (robzak) | 6375 comments Mod
I voted in 6 categories..

Fantasy: Fool's Quest, though this was a tough decision between a few books for me. So many good fantasy books again this year.
Sci-Fi: Nemesis Games This was an easy choice.
Humor: You're Never Weird on the Internet
Graphic Novels: Rat Queens, Vol. 2: The Far Reaching Tentacles of N'rygoth
YA SFF: Uprooted
Middle Grade: The Mad Apprentice (This was my write-in)

Rob (robzak) | 6375 comments Mod
I'm tempted to write-in The Price of Valour for Fantasy because it's one of my top reads this year and I feel like Hobb will easily make the first cut without out me.

Sadly Mr. Wexler is still quite under the radar outside of this group it seems.
