Suzanne | 1582 comments Oh geez....I was just thinking this week that I wanted to redecorate with a bunch of Star Wars stuff. That is awesome! I want them all!

I MUST HAVE THIS TOASTER!!!

message 155: by Dara (new)

Dara (cmdrdara) I forget who but someone makes a Battlestar Galactica toaster. It says "FRAK OFF".

Kat | 1178 comments I see I have opened a can of worms, haha.

message 158: by Ashley (new)

Ashley | 28 comments Love those shelves! I've thought about doing that but haven't found the time to make them.

That Star Wars toaster isn't as awesome as it looks. As with most novelty toasters it makes the bread look cool but toasts it so unevenly it tastes weird. The book ends are a most have though, if only I had the money.

Those novelty toasters look like they make terrible toast.

Andreas Thanks Kate, I ordered that one instantly, but look yourself: my new Katana bookends

Kat | 1178 comments Question of the day:

Do you ever have too many books? I mean, spare books you don't need/want anymore? What do you do with them? Charity shop? BookCrossing? BookMooch? Ebay? Amazon "sell yours"? Or... *gasp* ...recycling bin?

I need to downsize, but am not sure how.

message 164: by Ashley (new)

Ashley | 28 comments Give them to friends that read. That's what my sister does when she downsizes. I appreciate that because it's like Christmas for me.

well i swap with family and friends, donate them to charity shops and buy from charity shops.

i am very lucky that the biggest second hand book shop is based in the town i work in and they do a barter system. i take a bag of books in and they offer me a price for them. i except it and it get written down on my account card for future use.

message 166: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 1582 comments I donate mine to the library - they add some to their collection and sell some for the "friends of the library." It makes it easier for me to give those precious books away!

Rob (robzak) | 6375 comments Mod
I'm a hoarder. This has not come up for me yet.

message 168: by Dara (new)

Dara (cmdrdara) I donate them for fundraisers and stuff at local schools and churches. It's become less of a problem now that so much of my library is in ebook format.

message 169: by Sky (new)

Sky | 1291 comments we have a several bookcases at work for swapping books/DVDs/etc. I usually dump mine there.

message 170: by Sky (new)

Sky | 1291 comments Nice Alex.

My Great-Grandfather was in the Bohmenian Club. I'm not sure what their entrance requirements are these days but I think we'd both fit right in :P

Kat | 1178 comments I like the sacrifice thing. I might devise a ritual and wear a robe.

Rob, this is the first time in almost 40 years I'm willing to let go of books I've hoarded. But I've been the give-leftover-books-to-person for so many different people over the years that my collection now contains a considerable number of books I've never wanted in the first place, and will most likely never read, ever. Footballer's memoirs, for example. And I lug them around with me every time I move house.

Tried BookMooch.com, but nobody wants my books, despite the site claiming they're on other people's wishlist and they have been emailed to inform them. Not sure if I'm late to the party and the website is dead.

Will try BookCrossing next.

My problem with charity shops and used book stores is that most of my books are in English, but I'm in Germany. They will take a few select bestsellers, but no random English books.

Same with swapping - most people I have real life contact with over here can't read English fluent enough.

The library does not take any donations at all. I found this out after I borrowed Sabriel from their English Language shelf (they have ONE shelf....), and they did not have the sequel Lirael. I found a copy in my own collection and tried to donate it for the shelf, but they told me they only stock books purchased by them through their own catalogues, using their own funds. German bureaucracy, I assume.

Also - Finar's Organic Chemistry Vol. II and similar items need to go as well, and they're not so hot for entertainment reading...

message 172: by Sky (new)

Sky | 1291 comments I bought a house yesterday! Well, at least my offer was accepted :P The current owners have bookshelves everywhere, and I am drooling just thinking of all the books I can move back in from the garage of my current place. Maybe I'll even start buying hardcovers again instead of getting everything on the Kindle :P

Today I met Veronica + Josh and other S&L people and we went to see Scalzi's talk at the Bay Area Book Faire...He read from an upcoming Old Man's War book and talked about his blog post that spoke about how he knew when he had made it, and what it was like to live in poverty. Great guy, and very funny...He could be a stand up comedian if he gets tired of writing sci-fi.

All-in-all a great weekend! No reading done yet though :P

Congrats on the house. I uh bought a new Hvac vir mine this weekend. Weeee.

Jealous about the s&l Scalzi meetup. I hope I get to meet a bunch of people when I visit this summer.

message 177: by Sky (new)

Sky | 1291 comments Thanks all! You are coming out in August, right Rob? Was it beginning or end?

message 178: by Rob, Mayor of Ghost Town (new)

Rob (robzak) | 6375 comments Mod
End of August. So I can be there for the meetup.

Oh and on a plus side, I did just see Chris Hardwick and he was hilarious.

Kat | 1178 comments Congrats on the house!

And yeah, envious about the Scalzi meeting :)

message 185: by Bill (new)

Bill | 1596 comments I really need to pick up a xbone soon. Don't have 200 hours to spend on a new Elder Scrolls right now. My character in Skyrim was named Fiddler.

message 186: by Scott (new)

Scott (thekeeblertree) | 1049 comments So far I've had the most fun on GTA 5 online and Dying Light. I'm not big on Zombie games, but that shit was fun. 4 player co-op was baller

My 360 is rotting, and has been for years. If I buy a new console it'll probably be a WiU when they put out the next Zelda game, or if I want to play some Kart or Smash Brothers.

message 188: by Dara (new)

Dara (cmdrdara) Alex - Go find it! Get sucked into that black hole that is Skyrim. I've played it to death I think. I don't have anything else to do but dick around and do radiant quests.

Kat | 1178 comments I did it the other way around: my game character's names have made it into my novel :)

message 192: by Dara (new)

Dara (cmdrdara) Guy spends $50,000 on Elder Scrolls basement. http://www.barcroft.tv/superfan-spend...

It looks incredible but I can think of a lot of things that I'd rather spend 50k on (it doesn't look like money is an issue for these people). Also his son's name is Indie and that's just stupid.

LOL. OK then..

message 194: by Kat (last edited Jun 09, 2015 01:22PM) (new)

Kat | 1178 comments I second the mortgage...

The leather sofa, though. He spent so much money to make it look medieval and then he plonks a black leather couch in the middle?

How much is 50k $ in real money anyway?

message 195: by Dara (new)

Dara (cmdrdara) I feel like a lot of that could be done on the cheap. Personally, I don't need a stone waterfall shower. It's the small touches that work - the books, potions, lights, barrels.

And a TV - though I do remember a TV and a PS3 involved in playing Skyrim.

One of the hotels we stayed at on our honeymoon had a faux rock waterfall shower and a hot tub fed by a waterfall....It was actually a lot of fun. If his wife is into that sort of role playing, its totally worth $50k. If its just his "man cave" then totally not. If you get my drift.

message 198: by Kat (new)

Kat | 1178 comments Yes, the shower is a cool feature.

When I lived in New Zealand there was a place not far from my house with a real waterfall where you could swim, that was of course the crème de la crème.

I like the fact Ms Yant put an apple in your parcel, Alex :)

message 199: by Dara (new)

Dara (cmdrdara) What websites do you guys read daily? I'm looking for new ones. I'm tired of reading depressing stuff so I've had to drop some mainstays and the quality of some of my old regulars has dropped (io9) so I'm looking for some new content.

I like geek-centric stuff, tech blogs, long read essays. Any suggestions?

I still mostly read i09. In fact a large part of what I read is Gawker (i09, Gizmodo, Kotaku). I also do Engadget, Tor.com, a bunch of author blogs/websites. When Joystiq went away, I started following Polygon and that's been pretty good. I still do Slashdot, though they always seem way behind my other feeds on all but a few things.

I use an RSS reader (Feedly) rather than visiting any of the sites. I skim through most stuff picking out only a handful of things to read most of the time.

At the same time though, I don't recall being in the dark about something I was interested in, so that mix seems to work for me even if some of it
