Previously read true-crime books : A Death in Italy: The Definitive Account of the Amanda Knox Case, Hotel Kerobokan and Catch Me If You Can: The True Story Of A Real Fake

I have realised that I enjoy reading 'TrueCrime' books since I love to think 'who have done it' .
I enjoyed reading mystery / detective books by Enid Blyton / Agatha Christie when I was very young.
Other than that, I am obsessed to 'forensic scientific' topics such as NCIS, Body of Proof and so-on.

I've heard that from others, it is the first book she wrote so that might be why it's not as good as most of her books. It's also one of those that was released under two titles: The Rapist's Wife (1995) and Evil Beside Her (2008) Kathryn Casey.

Oh the lovely Mr. Kemper, as my friend Eileen would say, that was a smiley case.

I am also eagerly awaiting your book.

Nancy Hudson (docnancy) | 3 comments I love Kathryn Casey's books, but the one about the husband who was a rapist was least satisfying. I hope she puts a new book out soon. I am currently reading Deadly Deceit by Don Lasseter. He is a good author also. He writes a lot more books though.

I haven't read that one . How long do you stick with a book if you're not enjoying it ?
I know some people keep reading them no matter what, so they will complete the book .
I should try to do that myself ,because sometimes I might be missing a good book !

I think I've read something by Lassiter, but I can't remember what it was ! Doggone, I wish I would have kept better track of what I've read in the past. I've spent days trying to get my books all recorded that I've read, but I know I'm still missing a bunch .

Mary Claire (mcmattiello) Just finished Duel with the Devil by Paul Collins. It was great! Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr defend a man accused of murder. I gave it 4 stars. Historical true crime.

I read that book too, I even went to the location of the well to see if I could talk the owner into letting me into the basement to see the well, alas the cafe where the well is located is closed, out of business closed.

I'm glad to hear more about this one. I've been debating about getting it and very tempted ,since Burr was quite a character .
Thanks for the note !

Hi everyone. I haven't been reading True Crime as much as I used to, but there are a couple that I've read recently that I would recommend.

Serpentine. This one reads like a top notch international crime thriller. It's easy to forget that it's a true story.

If anyone is interested in a light hearted, funny True Crime book, I'd recommend Ballad of the Whiskey Robber: A True Story of Bank Heists, Ice Hockey, Transylvanian Pelt Smuggling, Moonlighting Detectives, and Broken Hearts. It's hilarious.

message 138: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Derek
Thanks for the 2 recommendations . I've heard of Serpentine but have yet to read it. The other sounds quite interesting !

I usually stick it out to the last word, since most (not all!) end up making it worth my while. Some may just take a bit longer than usual for me to get through, like this particular one. Casey is one of my favorites in the genre-once I finish "Evil Beside Her", I will have read all her true crime books!

I need to learn from you to stick with it then . Great job, to finish all of Casey's books. When is her next new one coming out,do you know ?

She's apparently currently writing, "DELIVER US: THREE DECADES OF MURDER AND REDEMPTION IN THE INFAMOUS TEXAS KILLING FIELDS", which is supposed to come out late 2014-I can't wait, lol. From her website (http://www.kathryncasey.com/) "South of Houston going into Galveston, since the 1970s, thirty girls and young women have been killed. Many of their murders remain unsolved. I'm investigating and writing about the cases and the people involved. I hope that DELIVER US will be published in late 2014."

I've seen a couple tv shows about that case. It should be interesting to read the whole story put together. That's almost gotta be someone from down in the area, don't you think, to continue dumping everyone in the same place each time ?
I hope they find him !

Nancy Hudson (docnancy) | 3 comments I watched a movie made in Mexico that was excellent and it was about all the women killed across the border in Ciudad Jaurez and left in the desert . The justice system has failed to prosecute anyone and it still isn't even clear who has been committing these murders though clearly gangs or drug cartels. Anyway jimmy smits was in the movie I believe and he was from Texas and a lawyer and I recall something about women also possibly being kidnapped from across the border. I watched it several years ago and can't recall the name. Over 800 women!

Could it possibly be The Daughters of Juarez: A True Story of Serial Murder South of the Border
The Daughters of Juarez A True Story of Serial Murder South of the Border by Teresa Rodriguez

That sounds like the same thing you might be talking about . I haven't read it ,but it sounded familiar .

message 147: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Hudson (docnancy) | 3 comments It was a foreign film, partially fictional, but yes, it is about that situation in Mexico, which is particularly appalling.

Speaking of True Crime books focused on the U.S.-Mexican border, I really liked Buried Secrets: A True Story of Drug Running, Black Magic, and Human Sacrifice. Very interesting & disturbing book.

Down by the River: Drugs, Money, Murder, and Family was also a good read.

I also like Kathryn Casey's work, but I've experienced her books through audio. In general very good, but at times it does drag a little. That's why its good to listen to the audio as you can put it in the background when it's an uninteresting part. However my favourite of her books Descent into Hell kept me rivited right the way through.
