Ana is convicted of murdering Stefan Andersson, a brilliant scientist, a medical researcher, by pummeling him with her high heel. I've uncovered evidence that much more was going on in this case than was ever revealed in the intense media coverage.

The second book I'm working on made national, front-page headlines, the Kaufman County, Texas, murders of a district attorney, his wife, and the top prosecutor. It's a strange case of revenge with tragic results. Eric Williams, a justice of the peace, and his wife, Kim, have been convicted in the killings. (less)

It's an amazing place to be a true crime writer. Texans live big and bold, we're brash, and the crimes mirror that. Sadly, there's never a shortage of incredible murders in Texas. I look for cases I care about, the ones I feel compelled to understand. I want to know who the people are, what brought them together, and what led to the tragedy that ended a life. I look for a case with an interesting investigation, lots of twists and turns, like a good mystery novel. In the end, the plots are often so extraordinary, at times even bizarre, that I couldn't write them as fiction. No one would believe them. Yet, they're real. (less)

For those of you who've missed the news, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals has reversed David Temple's conviction. Temple is the Katy, Texas, husband in the book SHATTERED who in 2007 was convicted of murdering his pregnant wife, Belinda. David is now free awaiting a retrial.

I have no conflict with the court's decision. Everyone should have a fair trial, especially when facing a sentence of... Read more of this blog post »

I so enjoyed this book. Backman's wisdom shines through, and I reread passages soaking them in. The characters are beautifully drawn. It's the kind of book that is so life affirming. Highly recommended.
