Emma I thought the ending was bittersweet. (I'm not a fan of that word.)
I don't really know what to make of it though, it was so different.

Normally, the book would've ended with Tess and Will getting married or something so I thought it was kinda depressing to read that they lived happily, got kids, and all that. Not because that stuff is depressing but the idea that they grew old and he died just like that. It was strange because they fought through three books to stay alive and then there's this epilogue saying: "Oh, well. Years went by and now he's dead."

I'm rambling.

But it was okay. It could've ended much worse so I'm okay with it.

I just don't know, I think it was kind of cruel to both of them in a way, and I think it would have been better for Jem to have died rather then have to live a century and then some with the silent brothers. Plus, Will's death was the most painful thing I have ever read.

Lindsey This book had one of the best endings/series conclusions that I've ever read (possibly THE best). I couldn't have asked for a better way to conclude things with this series - we all knew Will was her first and biggest love and we got to experience that and we also knew she loved Jem, though not with the same passion she had for Will. Her moving on (much later after Will's death) with Jem was perfect - Tess had experienced her life with her great love, and now she gets to experience it with the man she loved and cherished as a friend and companion. It wasn't clear if Jem was also immortal or not, but I like to think he was so that they could venture through life together as friends and lovers. This book broke my heart, but in a good way. It showed us a powerful portrayal of the love shared between three friends and the ties that bind. It showed us that life isn't always fair and that happiness and heartbreak are often a package deal - but in the end there is beauty in all of it.

I agree. Although I hate to be the bearer of bad news, it was stated that Jem was human again at the end, and therefore mortal. After finding out he was cured, I did wonder about his mortality, and I was kind of hoping he was still immortal. I don't know. I think Cassandra made him mortal for a reason, but I just liked the idea of Tessa and Jem being together forever after Will. Tessa had to suffer through the loss of one great love, but she could keep the other for eternity. It just sounds nice to me in theory, but it goes back to what you said, that life isn't always fair and that happiness and heartbreak often accompany each other. Maybe that's what Cassandra was trying to say. Nonetheless, it was still a great conclusion. I LOVE this series!

I know, that's kinda what I meant. It felt so wrong to read that Will died! I had to reread that part a few times before it sunk in.

I knew that Jem didn't die when he was suppose to have died. I just felt like Cassandra wouldn't kill him off just like that. So I was prepared for something to happen to him. I don't remember what I expected though.

Seemed too perfect? It was too perfect. Clare obviously tries too hard to please everyone. It never works out. Plus, Will is way too hot and way too amazing to simply be killed off in an epilogue.

message 263: by Safina (new) - rated it 5 stars

Safina well this is my review:

***Spoilers included in this review***

What makes this series is not the love Will and Jem had for Tessa, but the love they had for each other. Initially I was quite hesitant to read this series after reading the plot summary (After attempting to read city of bones and getting annoyed at the excessive use of similes, the awful writing and the spontaneousness, I never thought I'd read another Cassandra Clare book, but I was pleasantly surprised at the improvement of writing in TID after deciding to give it a go) and I did not initially like the fact that Tessa ended up with both boys, but after reading it, I am satisfied with the ending..well..most of it. Tessa did begin to annoy me in Clockwork prince...having got the impression that Tessa only *lusted* after Will and was only using Jem to get over him. Whenever she was with Jem, she would always think about Will, and I have a problem with that. Although CC did state Tessa loved both equally, we saw more of Will's POV and his love for Tessa and so we sympathised with him a lot. Also, he was portrayed as the 'hero', and poor Jem was too Ill and couldn't do the same. We also never saw much of Jem's POV, and fair enough, it would ruin the story if we did, but I do think CC could have done a better job at showing Tessa's love for him. Another thing that got me was the impromptu sex. Yes they may have died, yes they thought jem was dead, but I have a problem with will stating that he would never be with Tessa if jem died blah blah and then goes and does exactly that. Don't get me wrong, I love will, but I just found this a little rude.
Another thing I did not like was the POV changing in the middle of a chapter. Some people may like this, and it was nice seeing the stories of Cecily and Sophie and Charlotte, but personally I think it really destroys the suspense.
And the ending!!! Bittersweet. There's no other word for it. I do think Will got the better end of the stick, being the one to marry Tessa, have children with her and grow up with his friends (which Jem will never be able to do) while Jem was a silent brother..but what gets me is that Will and Jem never really got to spend their lives together...the one person they cared most about. I teared up at the end when Will brought Tessa to meet his parents thinking it should've been Jem there with him (in a no homo way). I also cried in the epilogue when Jem played music on Will's deathbed...the way he turned away when he heard the child's name was James <\3
Yes they both ended up with Tessa..and for that I am satisfied but until the last page I didn't realise what made me unsatisfied. And that is, Will and Jem not being together, never again fighting side by side, never again joking around the way they used to, never again being parabatai.

In conclusion, the writing is so much better than in city of bones and I love the description. It really sets the scene of Victorian England. It's a simple plot, yes, and sometimes predictable, but the way Clare bound it together and made it so emotion provoking, is something not many authors can do.

P.S. Ducks.

Yeah... I don't hate Jem, it's just that C.C always made it seem like Tessa loved Will a lot more than she loved Jem. So I got pretty pissed off with the epilogue. And I did get sad when I realized that Jem would never see Will again, he'd never get to talk to him. I know Tessa lost him too, but she got to see Will everyday after they got married. But not Jem. *SNIFFLE* Will and Jem together were amazing. You could see their parabatai bond sooo much more than you can see Jace and Alec's. Just... wow

message 265: by Loony (new) - rated it 5 stars

Loony I just cried on every chapter especially on the 14th.

And wth was that ending. I am Team Will, but also Team Will-Jem bromance. It's so weird that Tessa gets to keep both of them.

AND WHY DID WILL HAVE TO DIE?! 3

I don't know. I am full of feels right now. But I like this book nonetheless.

message 266: by Loony (new) - rated it 5 stars

Loony Reading your reactions make me hate Tessa... ugghh. I think Tessa loved Will more than Jem. Just saying. Is it possible for Will to be alive again (God, I'm crazy).

Anyway, do you think Will and Tessa's children or future descendants will at least have Tessa's ability to Change?

AND. I just have to say I love Cecy-Gabriel and Sophie-Gideon!! Even Will-Magnus and Will-Gabriel. Everything Herondale I love.

Bella Marie Cullen I had problems finishing. I had to stop after every other page towards the end, I could not stop crying.
Rated 5 stars. Dang good prequel trilogy.

Yep, that's true. That is why Clockwork Princess sucks. The ending was written to make all fans happy, ignoring what had happened in Clockwork Angel and Clockwork Prince, where we read about the passionate love between Will and Tessa and more sisterly love between Jem and Tessa. Cop out end.

I agree! Or she could have just stopped the book at Will and Tess getting together. That would have been perfect. We all knew she was going to outlive him, we didn't need to see it and feel it, that was horrible. She could have still got together with Jem in one of the Immortal Instruments books if she felt strongly about that happening. I really didn't think it was necessary though.

Tessa's words to Jem in the Epilogue implied that she has never stopped loving him, from the beginning. Seriously? Where did it start? At Clockwork Princess.
And you never stopped loving someone but didn't even bother spend sometimes mourning for his death and went off making love with the other someone she was also in love??
Totally horrible ending!

I really want to read about Jace but thinking about reading more about Jem and Tessa has lessen my excitement.

Yeah, mine too. I would've been SO much more excited if the whole Tessa and Jem thing was non-existent.

Nurlely Cami wrote: "...and put Tessa and Jem into TMI. Simple and clever and nobody gets hurt and cries his/hers heart out for Will "

No please. I am Jace's big fans but reading something about Tessa and Jem in City of Heavenly Fire will ruin my excitement. Cassie can write about Tessa-Jem in a novella or a series, but please do not include them in TMI.

Madeline Wolf I cried at the end. *Spoiler* When Will died in the epilogue It literally killed me. I do not(Personally) cry a lot for books, but this made my list of now 2.5(Long story.) I ABSOLUTELY LOVED the book. Its so dramatic, and you cant tell whats going to happen next. LOVE the book.

chinami given that this sort of ending is not only unusual but also a bit artificial. I am a hard core jem fan and was shattered that he never got a chance to be with tessa like Will had. it may appear that jem gains over will's death but will too had gained over jem's incapability.Tessa's morals or lack thereof aside, she is bound to move on after will. she has long life before her.
will married tessa not long after jem took his vows to brotherhood. in order to pacify will fans, i hope she met jem after a good mourning over will. the same cannot be said for jem fans when Tessa made only a feeble attempt in mourning their lost love.

message 286: by Abby (new) - rated it 5 stars

Abby I was so sad at the beginning of the epilogue when it was about will but then at the end of the book I was so mad. I know she loved Jem but come on, will was totally her soulmate and she never loved Jem like she loved Will. And even after Cassandra had been hinting about that for the whole series, she ends it like she loved them equally and the same. I hated it and it makes me really mad.
It's sad though because I liked Jem and now this really ruined him for me because I can't think of him without thinking that he was the guy that ended up with Tessa even though he never would have been with her in the first place if Will hadn't had a curse. She never would have even looked at Jem if will was nice to her from the beginjng

message 288: by Dana (new) - rated it 4 stars

Dana Way too perfect. I was honestly kinda shocked by how the author wrapped it all up like that. I didn't feel that it was necessary at all and frankly Tessa never deserved sweet Jem to begin with!On the other hand no one forced Jem to be such a pushover all the time. I would have been fine with them being friends but as others stated I dont like how she gets to have her cake and eat it too.

message 289: by Lacey (last edited Jul 18, 2014 08:48PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lacey Honestly this series made the entire Cassandra Clare shadowhunter novels seem soo fantastically well conceptualized. I loved it. With regards to the love triangle, I've always hated it, the whole concept. Yet. This book took it to another level. The love between characters made me so attached to them, wanted them to be happy only because we knew how much each one of them deserved it. I personally looved Jem. No one could not love him. IT was never clear that Tessa truely belonggged with him, since the author made it clear that Tess and Will were seemingly made for each other. And I was thrilled they had spent their life together.I yearned for a deeper perspective from Jems side, and how his feelings developed.

BY the end of the epilogue, I was so completely overwhelmed. This has been a very commendable conclusion. Wrapping up the story lines, intimately, yet showing us the future ahead. I was in tears when I realised Jem could finally have a chance of real happiness again. We all knew deep down, Clare could not create a character like Jem, so pure and demanding of the readers hearts,to not give his story a proper ending. I do agree however that it is STILL NOT easy to understand, how they both fell back into stride where they left of. I'd have liked to see how they rebuilt their relationship. Perhaps we will some other time?

Cheers.

Brieanne Aguila This series was amazing! While I always wanted Tessa to be with Will I totally understood the love she had for Jem and was so torn for all of them. And the love between Jem and Will was probably one of the most beautiful aspects of this series. Before I finished the series I was so upset when Jem came back as a silent brother. At that point I would have rather that he died. I know that sounds harsh but I could not stand thinking about him living the loveless and solitude life of a silent brother knowing how much he feels and loves and shines. It broke my heart that it would be his fate. That's why the epilogue really saved the book for me. While I still would have loved it, I felt so relieved that he would have his mortality and with the one he loved.

The way that Clare wrote about Jem and Will's souls being as one, and therefore Tessa loving them both was perfect. Love is complicated and not always black and white. It made the story so much more real and deep that Tessa loved them both and it was really because the 3 of them were inextricably linked, because Will and Jem were Parabatai and utterly connected. They all loved each other and that made the novel so much better than just having the conventional love story or love triangle. I don't want it to end! I want to live in the world a while longer!
