Sarah | 3915 comments Wow Valerie, that's impressive. I think I started the challenge in Sept and I'm only at 42.

Yeah, but Valerie said 2013, aren't you talking about 2014? I'm pretty sure we know who the fastest reader is...

message 253: by Michael (new)

Michael | 22 comments 34 so far but most of these are on my TBR list so will hopefully be clicking up.

message 254: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (darthval) | 781 comments I meant 2013, so not so impressive at all, but I am pleased with the progress. :)

message 255: by [deleted user] (last edited Jan 01, 2015 07:34AM) (new)

I'm up to 47 now, most of which I had not read before discovering this group.

message 256: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments Oh, yeah I did join in 2014. I got lucky with mine because I had recently read a few. I've had way too much fun with this shelf. It's so easy to choose these for my next read :)

message 257: by Suzi (new)

Suzi (suzpep) Of those on the Listopia list, I've read 10, and currently have 13 on my To Read list. This is without reading through them each to see what others I want to add. Although since I've close to 100 on my To Read, not sure I need to add more. Having a hard time picking what to read next!

message 258: by Lonnie (new)

Lonnie (easydemon) | 3 comments Hmm... I have read only 14 books, but hopefully I will double that total by the end of this year.

message 259: by Louise (new)

Louise Tebbutt | 32 comments Only 9! Must try harder! Might have been 10, but I just couldn't get into Snow Crash.

Fabi NEEDS Email Notifications | 53 comments I just joined today. Looks like I've read about 20 or so from the list already. Lots more I'd like to read. :-)

message 261: by Maarit (last edited Jan 08, 2015 06:53AM) (new)

Maarit | 136 comments I've only read 28 books from the list, but I'm currently reading two more, so the number will be nice round 30 soon enough. I've also abandoned three list books around half-way, so those are not counted.

There's a bunch of books in the list that don't interest me that much for example The Game of Thrones (I gave the first book a try, but it was boring as hell so I quited it) and World War Z (I hate zombies). Also some books are bit hard to get around here, since I don't (and won't) own an e-reader and the libraries usually don't buy "unknownish" books in their collections, because they're not translated and books in English are bought based on their estimated popularity within people who read them. So that's why I'm not going to read all the list books, but I think I'd get over 50 books read someday.

message 262: by Michael (new)

Michael | 1303 comments Just updated my tally and it looks like I've read 42. I have two more currently reading, but I guess I'd better stop now since that is the perfect number and I shouldn't read any more! (I'm just sad The Hobbit was my 42nd book, and not last month's The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It would have been so poetic...)

message 263: by Louise (last edited Jan 08, 2015 01:48PM) (new)

Louise Tebbutt | 32 comments Maarit, your comment breaks my heart! It makes me want to find and post books to them you. A type of 'language barrier' I had never considered. To have your choice restricted must be so frustrating. I am sure there are plenty of good books in your native tongue, but your command of English is obviously excellent, you should be able to exercise your skill freely, reading any book you want.

Don't forget it works both ways - we are currently reading The Carpet Makers by Andreas Eschbach, most of us (I think) in the discussion can only read this because it has been translated to English. Many other of his books have not been translated, and so they are inaccessible to those who don't speak German. I assume translation also works by "interest" or "demand", and "unknownish" books in languages other than English would not show up in English-speaking libraries either.

And worse, from my own experience, there are myriad pockets within the United States with libraries that hardly acknowledge sci-fi/fantasy at all, and so unless you have ready access to money and internet, you are restricted by what your local librarian thinks is popular, or acceptable...

message 265: by Michael (new)

Michael | 153 comments I've read 38 of the titles from the list, if I counted right. I also have another half dozen from the list on my "to read" stack.

message 266: by Louise (new)

Louise Tebbutt | 32 comments Good point Michael, I hadn't considered that. I myself am so overwhelmed with the choices that are in English, I have trouble deciding what to read next every time! That's why I like the idea of this challenge. It narrows my choices down for me, in genres that I know I like, with the aid of loads of reviews to help me pinpoint books I will really love. Sometimes I feel like an addict, always looking for a 5 star 'fix' - a book that really wows me and makes me think for days (e.g. The Sparrow). I feel I've wasted my valuable time when a book IMO is 3 or less stars. I really need to get over this!

message 267: by Maarit (last edited Jan 09, 2015 01:38AM) (new)

Maarit | 136 comments I read books in English, too, they are just a bit more hard to get in here, if you don't want to buy them all in physical form a bit expensively and then notice that the book isn't that great after all. This is since amazon.co.uk stopped free super saver deliveries to Finland (and other European countries) for packages that costed more than 25 pounds and started to take outrageous prices for delivery (basic postals + prize per weight), so postals now easily go over for what the package itself is worth.

That's why we're now limited to Finnish (online) bookstores, which ain't that cheap (though sometimes you can make a good deal out of some books), but you get postals usually free of charge (atleast in Adlibris, which has the best variety of books in here, though Akateeminen kirjakauppa is also good).

Try bookdepository.com. Free shipping to over 100 countries, including Finland.

message 269: by Steve (last edited Jan 13, 2015 07:15AM) (new)

Steve | 53 comments I have read 62 of the book club selections from listopia. I hope to read 20-30 books this year and I am very happy to have some recommendations that will be outside the box for me. I have enjoyed The Sparrow, The Carpet Makers, and Annihilation for new reads this year off the list. Glad I found this club!

message 270: by Neal (new)

Neal (infinispace) I've only read 33. But I think that's mainly because I don't really read fantasy anymore...haven't for a couple decades. I do own quite a few listed tho, so that's good news. =)

message 271: by Wayfarer (new)

Wayfarer | 5 comments I just joined recently. It appears I've read just 17 of them.
I hope to read some more though.

message 272: by Cami (new)

Cami | 1 comments I too joined recently and have read 21 of the books. 20 are on my to-read -shelf. I'm going to pick up The Carpet Makers if I can find it somewhere.

And Kim, thanks for the suggestion of bookdepository.com! I'm also from Finland and suffering from the same problem as Maarit with libraries and books in English. I usually end up having to buy the books I want to read, but I'm a student and poor, so it's not an option all the time, especially with stupidly high postals...

Cami, if you have an electronic reader or a smartphone or tablet device, you can get books at reduced prices from print versions as well as having a way to keep several in an easy to transport format. Carpet Makers for example is available from Barnes and Noble on their Nook device for $ 7.99 USD. Just an idea / suggestion.

message 274: by Erin (new)

Erin | 6 comments I just joined earlier today and I've read:

A Game of Thrones
Ender's Game
Fahrenheit 451
A Clash of Kings
Mistborn
Slaughterhouse-Five
Assassin's Apprentice
The Princess Bride
The Graveyard Book
The Lies of Locke Lamora
Gardens of the Moon
Brave New World
The Name of the Wind
The Ocean at the End of the Lane
The Hobbit
Warbreaker
Eon
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
White Cat

So that's 19 I think. I'm currently reading The Fellowship of the Ring and then another 13 or 14 are on my to read list.

message 275: by Richard (new)

Richard (thinkingbluecountingtwo) | 447 comments I've just had a look through our Listopia list And I'm a little concerned that the list now shows 190 books whereas there are only 175 books on the clubs 'read' shelf. I definitely don't remember the club reading all of the Harry Potter books, therefore I have a sneaky suspicion that someone has mistakenly added their faves onto the list.

Kim, any chance of sorting the list out for us, I certainly use it to keep a running total of how many club books I've managed.

Thanks.

message 276: by Michael (new)

Michael | 1303 comments Wow, I forgot that could happen, but now I remember the warning at the top of the list not to add books. What a pain...

Kim, I did notice that you can click on who voted for Harry Potter #6 or whatever, and see that person's entire voting list. It might make tracking down which books to delete a bit faster.

message 277: by Kim (new)

Kim | 1499 comments Fixed.

Richard (thinkingbluecountingtwo) | 447 comments Thanks Kim, much appreciated.

message 280: by Charles (new)

Charles McGarry (goodreadscomcharles-mcgarry) 13 so far LOL. Yes I know, very poor. One of my favorite books on there is The Name of the Wind. Rothfuss is brilliant!

message 281: by Steve (new)

Steve Downes (stevedownes) | 28 comments wow, I was surprised by how few of these I have read, but then I do read an awful lot of history books ... curse you one pair of eyes!

I love the detail of your list, Richard. Good stuff. I think it's such a great treat that we can track our reading like this because of Goodreads.

I'm starting to appreciate that approach, actually. With all of the ratings and reviews at my fingertips - and the ability to check reviewer compatibilities - I am much better at picking 4 and 5 star books now. Gone are the days of reading books based on recommendations of friends and family even when their interests are nothing like my own! 3 star books are "fine", but life's too short!

message 286: by Jacquie (new)

Jacquie | 23 comments I joined a couple weeks ago, and was surprised to find I've read 76 of the books on the list! Another pleasant surprise was that there are a few on there I've never heard of - can't wait to get started on those!

message 287: by Julie (new)

Julie (juliemdobson) I've joined a while ago, but until recently just lurked. I've read about 20 books, but at least 26 books on the list are on my TBR list before I took a close look at the bookshelf. There are probably more if I investigate further into the other books.

message 288: by Allison (new)

Allison I recently joined and have read 56 of the books on the list.

message 289: by Chris (new)

Chris (kingtermite) | 25 comments Wow. I'm new to the group, but a lot less than I'd hoped.

It looks like 17 books in that list I've read. The book I'm reading now is in the list, so soon to be 18.

message 290: by Felicia (new)

Felicia (feliciajoe) I joined this group today, and it seems like I've read a total of 9 books from this group.

message 291: by Felicia (new)

Felicia (feliciajoe) 10 now.

message 292: by Donna (last edited Jun 11, 2015 08:28PM) (new)

Donna (earthreader) | 19 comments I'm pretty much a new member, and I've read 22 of them so far. I've got a lot of catching up to do.

message 293: by Teanka (new)

Teanka | 49 comments Just checked the list and I've read 66 which is a bit less than I expected. But a lot of the titles were on my TBR anyway so I'm sure to improve the result soon :).

message 294: by Kirstin (new)

Kirstin | 7 comments Only 4... I have a lot of catching up to do! Many are on my to be read list however. :) I am still working on A Song of Ice and Fire series.

How do you like A Song of Ice and Fire? Personally, I loved that serial!

message 296: by Dylan (new)

Dylan Aha only 8 so far.. No worries I'll get them all read.

message 297: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Nogales (mnogales) 55!

Question: how do books get onto the list?

message 298: by Hank (new)

Hank (hankenstein) | 1231 comments These are all books of the month based on votes by the members via polls. We are currently voting on July's books and the voting will end tomorrow.

message 299: by YouKneeK (new)

YouKneeK | 1412 comments To expand a little bit on Hank’s answer, they’re books that have been chosen for the monthly group reads. Each month the group selects one fantasy book and one science fiction book through a process of nominations and voting. Group members who are interested can read and discuss the books together. The two books selected each month are the books that end up on the group shelf.

The process is described in more detail if you click on the “everything you need to know” link in the introductory text at the top of the group home page.

message 300: by Esther (new)

Esther (eshchory) | 555 comments I have read about 30 which is more than I expected.
