Sabrina | 375 comments Congratulations! So happy for some good news and a clubhouse celebration! Banana bread with chocolate chunks sounds very yummy!

message 1102: by DivaDiane (new)

DivaDiane SM | 3683 comments It’s my grandma’s recipe, altered for the modern age: whole spelt flour, and soya milk. The secret is using bananas that have turned black and souring/curdling the milk with vinegar (if your milk doesn’t happen to be sour on its own) and mixing the baking powder with the milk before hand (also for the fun explosion)! And we always add choc chunks. Good dark chocolate.

message 1104: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (michellehartline) | 3186 comments I just finally got around to checking the group shelves, and I've only read 63 or 68 of them. (By the time I started typing this, I've forgotten which!)

a pretty dang good start!!

This made me giggle, thanks! :D

If you want to check the number easily, try this!

message 1107: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (michellehartline) | 3186 comments Why, thank you, Anna- what a useful link! It turns out that I've read 69 on the shelf, and another 6 are in my TBR pile.

The link for read puts me at 80, but my careful calculations put me at 115. However, I did find two more buried in my TBR piles: The Calculating Stars and When Gravity Fails

message 1109: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10435 comments Hmm, that's strange CBR, are all the books on your Read shelf, or do you have exclusive shelves?

message 1110: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 6142 comments probably not as I read them pre-Goodreads

well, I just compared and my versions of

Black Company
Black Prism

Complete Grimm's Fairy Tales - I have this one: Delphi Complete Fairy Tales of The Brothers Grimm (Illustrated) by Jacob Grimm

Final Empire (Mistborn #1)
Golem and the Jinni
Grace of Kings
Handmaid's Tale
Last Policeman
Last Unicorn

and several others

don't end up in the matches list and they are only in the Read. I did exclude the books that were part of an omnibus (Game of Thrones, First law Trilogy, Once and Future King, etc). It's weird. And I'm going to keep on with my spreadsheet

message 1111: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10435 comments Whatever system works! I think I've gone through the group shelf enough times to make sure that all the ones I read before joining GR are on my Read shelf, but not everyone wants to do that. In that case the compare tool obviously isn't much use.

message 1112: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10435 comments I'm at 198, and I've already read one of the likely December winners, so that means I only need to read one more to reach my goal of 200! I'm going to spend the rest of 2020 trying to decide which book should have that honor :D

message 1113: by Hank (new)

Hank (hankenstein) | 1231 comments Nice!

Chart?cht=v&chs=200x100&chd=t:317,279,0,132&chds=0,317&chco=66bb66,6666bb
SFFBC’s books: 317 (185 not in common)
Books in common: 132

Wow, didn't realize I had read this many!

Also, there are several shelved books that are sensitive ot edition, or the particular collection the work may have been in. I know that The Snow Queen keeps messing with me for some reason...

CBRetriever | 6142 comments Mike wrote: "Also, there are several shelved books that are sensitive ot edition, or the particular collection the work may have been in. I know that The Snow Queen keeps messing with me for some reason... "

I have a feeling it's the edition that's the problem. I have a mix of UK and US published works with different publishers. The version is definitely the problem with the Grimm book.

Aha Black Company was an Omnibus
but Black Prism was a UK published book as was The Final Empire: Mistborn Book One

Golem and the Jinni was US published as was Handmaid's Tale

there doesn't seem to be one definite rhyme or reason, but I'm gonna stick with my spreadsheet copied from the group one

message 1117: by Jessica (last edited Nov 11, 2020 07:27AM) (new)

Jessica (jessica_peter) I've just recently joined the group and I've read 45. I'm not a huge sci-fi reader (other than post-apocalyptic) so that likely cut my count.

I DO have a lot of others on there on my wish list though! For 2021 I look forward to doing a Read All the Books Challenge

message 1121: by Liane (new)

Liane | 137 comments This has been a fun thread to pick and choose comments to read. That it has been going for 7 years is a testament to our persistence and how many new sci fi and fantasy books are out there to be enjoyed! Like many others have said, I have always felt more well read than many friends, but the reader’s here blow me away. Inspiring, though 2020 has also taught me to enjoy at my own pace. That said, I am looking forward to the clubhouse in the future but will continue to have my own supply of chocolate and red wine at hand here.

I'm up to 124, but worried that I'll fail to hit my 2020 goal of 150. My local library only has so many copies of the groups bookshelf books as audiobooks.

message 1123: by Mel (new)

Mel | 509 comments Oh wow! I didn't realize you could compare individual shelves as well! That would have made things so much easi-- Ah well. I am totally going to use this knowledge to set up future Buddy Reads.

I've only read 57 so far, but have another 78 on my TBR, so lots of potential there! However I know I'm never be completely caught up, and I'm okay with that. I recently created a Nope shelf for myself, and it's been so empowering.

message 1124: by Stephan (new)

Stephan Rogers I've read 16 off your list, coincidentally. I'm new here. I'm surprised you don't have a few decent books that came out recently on the list...or other books farther along in the series of an initial book that was read here.

message 1125: by Allison, Fairy Mod-mother (new)

Allison Hurd | 14234 comments Mod
Hi Stephan! the group stopped doing books further into series because participation was quite low. so you won't see many sequels! excited for you to share books you think ought to be on our shelf--we vote every month for the next 2 books!

message 1126: by Stephan (new)

Stephan Rogers That's a bummer. Thanks for letting me know.

message 1127: by Allison, Fairy Mod-mother (new)

Allison Hurd | 14234 comments Mod
eh. they aren't on the shelf but we do a lot of buddy reads, so you can still talk about the series with groupmates. I'm in one right now in preparation for rhythm of war!

message 1128: by Stephan (new)

Stephan Rogers I'm not sure how that works. What's a buddy read?

message 1129: by Allison, Fairy Mod-mother (new)

Allison Hurd | 14234 comments Mod
group reads are official club picks that members vote on. buddy reads are simply books that 2 or more people want to discuss as they read. we have a thread for setting them up. folks go there, see if there's interest in something and pick a date to start if there is!

message 1130: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (quiltsrme) | 39 comments 58 so far. Started about 2011.

message 1131: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jessica_peter) Melissa wrote: "Oh wow! I didn't realize you could compare individual shelves as well! ..."

I did it a very low tech way - I went through and counted. But then when I actually compared the shelves to my read I got almost half the number I'd counted! That likely means a lot of books I read forever ago (i.e. before 2010 when I started tracking everything on Goodreads) aren't marked as read. That will be a project for me...

Now up to 49 of 319 with several in the TBR pile.

message 1133: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10435 comments I'll be hitting 200 today not with a bang but with a whiny meh. But the good news is that I've already read all five books in the January 2021 scifi poll, and am pretty confident I'll have read the book that ends up winning the January 2021 fantasy poll, so technically that means I'm at 202, woohoo!

Seeing your post in read all the books, I decided to go check how far away I am to 100 and I can't believe it- I have 120 done!! - I think at least a third was read before joining years ago -

That’s amazing Coralie, congrats!

I’m currently at 177, and I think that’s probably as far as I’ll get this year. My next 3 planned books are tomes, and not on the group shelf.

I didn’t even break even with the newly added books this year, only reading 21 from the shelf. There were another 2 books voted in this year that I’d read in previous years, so that makes it sort of 23, but usually I manage 30 or so. This year was full of extenuating circumstances. Hitting 200 next year seems like a possibility, though.

message 1146: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10435 comments Since this is the thread where I've raved about broccolini in the past, I think it's the right place to share this. I was going through the notes on my phone, looking for something specific (I never found it) and I came across an old one titled "TO DO". I was curious why there was an old to do list, since I usually keep them (yes, several) pretty well updated, so I opened it and there was just one item on it:

TO DO:

- prep broccolini

That's it. That's my to do list from April 2018.

message 1147: by Allison, Fairy Mod-mother (new)

Allison Hurd | 14234 comments Mod
You prepped broccolini for a whole month???? Dang.

message 1148: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10435 comments I don't know? Probably not since it's still on the to do list?

message 1150: by Midiain (new)

Midiain | 310 comments You guys are amazing. I'm way behind with only 86 but if I make my goal I'll be just over a 100 by next year.
