You want to read: I read a YA SF series a couple years back. I cannot recall the series or author. It was about an orphaned boy in his early teens, with an uncle who was an illegal AI in his spaceship.

A dragon is fleeing an alien race that's wiped out his entire race. Dragon takes the boy as a willing host, becoming a tattoo on the boy's body. The dragon is a warrior-poet.
