Lisa Grønsund | 6163 comments I knew I should've waited. It's my own fault... I know, I know. But in my defense.... I'm like a little kid in the candy shop and all the yearly challenges look scrumptious!

So my question is, are there more fantastic yearly challenges that are still in the works to be posted? And if so, how many?

/Thanks in advance from an "anonymous" challenge-lover who just can't seem to say no to them :D

message 602: by Winter, Group Reads (new)

Winter (winter9) | 4998 comments I'm just on my ipod now and I'm not sure if all have been posted. I'm pretty sure Kadijah would know though. If she isn't on before tomorrow I can check ^^ I'm the same. I wowed to only do two next year because I alwayd forget to account for the readathons I do requiring specific themes and for slumps. But then it's time for planning again and one yearly after another draw me in lol.

message 603: by Winter, Group Reads (new)

Winter (winter9) | 4998 comments Actually when I checked now it seems all the planned ones where put into the calendar and it seems they are all posted now.

I know! I had planned on a maximum of 3 but I've already exceeded that, and that's before the ones today were added, and after I had to cut it down from six! It's terrible! But I mean, it's great! It's terribly great? greatly terrible? I don't even know anymore!

Anyways, thanks for the reply, Winter :)

Winter (winter9) | 4998 comments They are so much fun though and though I haven't completed all of them I have read more varied because of them ^^ I love the yearlies!

Well I am glad to hear you are enjoying the challenges, sorry they cause so much trouble :P
I just checked, and there will be two more yearly challenges going online; the challenge created by a member around December 15 and The members tasks' challenge on January 1st

Winter (winter9) | 4998 comments Thank you Ilona I forgot those :)

message 608: by Lisa (last edited Dec 05, 2017 02:30AM) (new)

Lisa Grønsund | 6163 comments Thanks, Ilona :) I had already counted those in my considerations but "unfortunately" I needed to draw the line somewhere. As much fun as they both sound, something had to give!

Lisa, I always join all the challenges (well at least most) because I can't help myself. If I finish them great, if not, there's always next year!

True, but to keep them all updated....

message 611: by Kadijah Michelle (new)

Kadijah Michelle (kadmich) | 2176 comments I only update once a month. Not after every book. That makes it much more manageable.

Yes I do monthly updates too but yet. I think I’m gonna do more elaborate updates on my pages and short ones on the Challenge pages. Gonna try that out!

✺Zen Orchid ✺ | 31 comments Is there a thread on this group for reading sales on kindles or books online?

message 614: by Ilona (new)

Ilona | 4698 comments Orchid, if you are interested in kindle sales I would recommend BookBub or Early Bird Books, both websites send you the latest ebook deals every day.

We are not keen on advertisements in the group, but feel free to send me or one of the other moderators a message if you want to promote something.

Skyler | 4 comments Hello Mods!

I'm taking part in a book drive that benefits the Pajama Program and was wondering if it would be appropriate to post about somewhere in the group? The Pajama Program is an organization that provides pajamas and books for children ages infant-18 in shelters and foster care in the US (primarily NYC). The book drive is through theSkimm who is collecting the books. All you have to do is buy one of your favorite childhood books off Amazon and add a sweet note in the "gift receipt" to the child in mind why you love this book, and send to the address provided. I have all the links and information.

If not, that's okay! I just thought what better place to reach out to people than on Goodreads :)

Hi Skyler, thank you for asking first, and it is totally okay to post this in our group. You may go ahead and make a topic about the book drive in our Let's Chat! folder. On the top right of the list, left of the group icon, you find "new topic", where you can fill in a title and the information.

Good luck, and let us know if you have any other questions :)

Hi April, you can find the Let's Turn Pages challenge here.

When you click on 2018 Yearly Challenges, you can see all Yearly Challenges. They're not all visible from the group's home page.

message 621: by Lisa (last edited Dec 29, 2017 10:25AM) (new)

Lisa Grønsund | 6163 comments Eric wrote: "must u read a book quickly?"

There are no speed-determined rules, Eric :) We have voracious readers, slow readers and everything in between. You can read at whatever pace you want, whatever you wish and how ever many books you desire :)

The only group activity that's time-limited in a way is the group reads where a time frame of a month is set as to discuss with other members. Buddy reads tend as a starting point to have a time-frame of a month depending on the book and the members participating.

I hope this answered your question :) Happy reading!

Issy (issytrulocke) Hey everyone, I wasn't sure where to post this as I couldn't find a recommendation thread. I'm very new here so not sure how things work. But I've always wanted to read some Agatha Christie books but never knew where to start! Is there a place here I can get recommendations without going through individual ratings? Just wondering which books are the best/good to start with. Thanks!

Hi Issy, I hear good things about And Then There Were None (still on my TBR).
We had Murder on the Orient Express as a group read this month and really liked it so a couple of us are starting the Hercule Poirot series in January if you'd like to join:

I finished a book yesterday and later marked it as read. I expected it to count towards my 20 book goal but nothing changed, I'm still at 0 of 20.

Does anyone here have an idea what I could to to make it count?

Did you check your date started and date finished? Date finished must be set on a date in 2018 for it to count. Just marking it as read won't make it count towards your challenge. Good luck!

In addition to Susy's comment: Was the book marked as 'currently reading' before you set it to 'read'? Normally if you do it like that, it counts towards the challenge.
To make it count now, you can set the date finished in your review to today.

Does that help?

message 632: by Ingi (new)

Ingi Eggert (ingieggert) | 2 comments It was on my "Want to Read" list - don't know if that is relevant.

After noticing that the book hadn't been logged towards my Challenge goal I logged it again. My second log included a start and finish date (Jan 2, 2018).

---

Disregard! I finally managed to log it correctly. I opened My Books list and edited the title, set the start/finish date again.

Sorry for the confusion and thanks for your help :)

Ilona | 4698 comments Ingi wrote: "It was on my "Want to Read" list - don't know if that is relevant."

It is, if the status changes from "want to read" to "read", it will not count towards your challenge. It has to be set to "currently reading" in between.

Anytime :)

message 634: by Helen (new)

Helen Hi! New to Groups/Reading Challenges, so please forgive me if these have been asked before, or are dumb questions!
1. I don't understand the difference in purpose between the Personal Challenges and the Member Corners. Is one just to announce how many you plan to read, and the other allows you to go into detail as desired?

2. Is there an easy way to find one's Member Corner? I made one (I think), but don't know how to find it again! Do I need to scroll through the entire list each time? I don't even remember what I called it! It would be so great if there was a way to link to it in my profile or something.

Thanks so much for your help!

message 635: by Blagica , Challenges (last edited Jan 03, 2018 07:03PM) (new)

Blagica | 12941 comments Helen first off welcome to the group. Everyone here does different things with their space. My personal challenge I put all my reviews in and my corner has all the challenges I am taking part in. Hope this helps.

I will find your corner and link it here the best advice I can give you is to bookmark it.

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Here you go.

message 636: by Helen (new)

Helen Thank you for your kind response, Blagica, and for the link. I'm now not sure if I even set up a Corner -- how can I tell? Was the link you sent to my corner or my challenge, or both? How did you find them? I'm not an idiot, but I'm finding the structure and navigation a bit confusing!

I really just want to have a list of the books in the challenge I'm following, by category, with my progress and some thoughts about them. I think I'm getting lost in the trees. 😊

Anyway, thank you again for your help -- I really appreciate it!

The link Blagica sent you is your Personal Challenge, in our Personal challenge 1-50 folder. She probably found it by finding you in the list of members and checking all you comments :)
But I recommend bookmarking your personal challenge and member corner as well.
You can make a member corner the same way you made your personal topic, but then in this folder. We have a guide here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
I use my member corner to keep an overview of all the books I read, buddy reads I plan and the challenges I participate in. Feel free to have a look: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
I keep my personal challenge topic for book reviews and interaction with other members: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

In the end, it is your choice how you use them :)
Let us know if you have any more questions!

I'm pretty sure I deleted a double I made last year by accident. By clicking on the (edit) after whatever I had named it. Just like you can edit the title, I could click the "delete this topic".
Might be remembering that wrong though and wouldn't want to test it out with any of my existing threads or make a new topic just to test the theory out and give you Mods more to do :D

I'm just guessing here, but it might be related with whether or not the person in question has verified their account :) Ofcourse, thankfully, we've got Mods that are more than happy to help but I agree Susy, it seems weird :)

This is weird indeed, but without verification members cannot even open a topic, let alone delete it..

New theory: maybe a member can only delete a topic if no-one else has commented, as they can delete their own comments, but not someone else's?
