Diane Griffith | 40 comments Thanks Jill. I will look up your book and write a review :-)
If you could do the same for 'Chasng Dreams in Lefkas' I would be SO grateful! If you could put it on Amazon.co.uk PLEASE? My nasty cyber bully has got his friends to write really horrid reviews on this site. Some kind words will push them back a bit.
We have lived in Cyprus since 2005, but will return to Lefkas to see our friends one day, but not in a camper van. :-(

Robert | 53 comments Hi Diane;
I'll glady buy, read and review 'Chasing Dreams in Lefkas' if you'll do the same for my book, 'Look Not Unto the Morrow'. You can see it here on Goodreads, or check my webpage: robertfantina.com

Regards,
Robert

Thank you so much for your kind review. Would you be so kind as to post it on Amazon.co.uk too? This is where most of the nasty comments are! :-(

message 257: by Diane (new)

Diane Griffith | 40 comments Hi, Robert. Did you see the review of 'Look Not Unto the Morrow' I posted on Amazon.com.today?
I hope you approve! I have never thought about the war in Vietnam... must have been terrible! It was a very moving story.

Robert | 53 comments Hi Diane;
Thank you! The review is great! I'm glad you enjoyed the story.
I'll let you know as soon as I've finished 'Chasing Dreams in Lefkas'.

Sincerely,
Bob

message 259: by Diane (new)

Diane Griffith | 40 comments No need to read it all! Just skim over enough to get the gist! I know it's not well written, I just wanted to share our experiences. Please excuse mistakes. It was written 20 years ago the hard way. :-(
Thanks Robert

message 260: by Robert (new)

Robert | 53 comments Twenty years ago: no spell check; no word count. No easy correct (if you made a mistake, you had to type the whole thing over). How did we ever manage???

message 261: by Diane (new)

Diane Griffith | 40 comments Yes, and I was so naive to think it was OK and that nobody would write critical reviews. I did'nt even know people wrote reviews until my grandson told me there were some good reviews on Amazon! But then 'jjramfan' turned up with the same terrible review he published in the UK Club magazine here in Cyprus. My husband complained because he had not shown it to me and I was doing a signing with 50 books. I didn't sell one! He got into trouble for that and although he left Cyprus later on he is still hounding me. He wrote the same review on Amazon.co.uk. And got his nasty partner to write really deflamatory reviews as 'donegalgirl' and lately 'Spearmint'. It's worth looking at the last one. It is so spiteful!
This is why I am desperate to push their reviews and comments back with a few kind words. Thanks, Robertt

Robert | 53 comments Hi Christine;
I'll glady buy, read and review your book if you'll do the same for mine, 'Look Not Unto the Morrow.' YOu can read about it on my website: robertfantina.com. I'm currently reading 'Chasing Dreams in Lefkas', and I have one more I've committed to reading before I could get to yours, but I'm sure I could review it during the first week of JUne. Let me know if you are interested.

If anyone is interested in doing a swap, let me know. You can read about my book here on Goodreads, on Amazon or my website, robertfantina.com.

Fb | 16 comments Hi,

I still need puzzle lovers to purchase and review my puzzle book for the Amazon Kindle platform.

http://www.amazon.com/Math-Logic-Word...

Any takers? I will purchase and review most books for the Kindle platform.

Flemming :)

Diane Griffith | 40 comments Hi FB.
I will take a look at your puzzle book and write a review. I would be so grateful if you could write a few kind words about any of my books. All on Amazon Kindle. Maybe 'Nobody's Pets In Cyprus.' Stories of some ill-treated dogs I have rescued and found homes for, and some cats too! It's for animal lovers and children. Lots of photos that I have taken over the last 5 years. I use proceeds from all my books to help these poor animals. I put this one straight on Kindle, so don't have a publishers web. link.
Thanks, Diane Griffith

Diane Griffith | 40 comments Hi, Robert
My Review of Look Not Unto the Morrow' On Amazon.

I was a young woman in the 60's and early 70's so I can appreciate this book more than some. I had never thought much about the war in Vietnam mainly because there wasn't the media in those days, and I was busy falling in and out of love! This book brought the feelings of those directly involved during this turbulent time to people like me.
I really felt for that young man Roger and his girlfriend. It must have been a terrible time! Parts of this story brought tears to my eyes. This was a very informative and moving book.
It is not the sort of book I would normally read but I enjoyed it, and so did my husband.

Lilo (liloh-p) | 12 comments One caveat with writing reviews like this: It decreases the value of reviews if it comes down to exchanging adulations. I am therefore a strong advocate for honest reviews.
I have this problem with a number of Goodread friends I really cherish. I would like to do them any possible favor but don't wish to lie. Several of them are waiting for reviews. So I'll probably make somersaults to come up with reviews that emphasize on the good in their books and let the bad fall under the table. Yet this isn't the real solution. There should be a difference between book recommendations which one writes for friends to help them promote their books and real and honest reviews.
On the other hand: When it comes to help animals, I'll probably be ready to do anything -- rob, steal and lie. And besides, Diane, I have meanwhile bought your book but haven't had a chance to look into it yet. Maybe it is great anyway.

message 268: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra Bogdanovic | 39 comments Lilo, I agree with you but only to a point. What a lot of people -- especially those who post reviews on the websites of major online booksellers -- don't seem to understand -- is that there are ways to deliver honest, constructive criticism in a review without being hurtful, hateful and downright vicious. It only takes one spiteful comment to ruin someone's reputation, and malice in any forum serves no useful purpose.
All of that being stated, I have been a journalist for more than 20 years. I've won my share of awards and taken my share of public criticism, so I have broad shoulders. I know there will be people who don't like my work -- and that's perfectly fine. If someone chooses to express their displeasure in an inappropriate manner, that speaks more about them than it does about me or my work.
I have thoroughly enjoyed all of the books I've read through these "swaps" and written reviews accordingly. I also appreciate the generous reviews I've received in return. Far from seeking "adulation," all I personally expect in any case is an honest assessment of my book that is written in a civilized and professional manner.

Nicholas Boyland (rhinotrikes) | 11 comments I am warm to this idea, but like a number of the posters here, I would appreciate someone buying my book; which I of course would reciprocate, however, I would like them to then post a genuine review of 3 stars or more if they think the work is worth it, or to not post a review at all if they think it sucks!
I like to read any action thriller or crime drama. My own novel,' Bittersweet Sacrifice' is the first book in the 'Bittersweet' trilogy and is a work of dramatic, erotic, romance. A kind of a romance which goes off the rails but which has a thrilling sub plot and a generous helping of natural wit. It is graphic though, so accept my apologies in advance!
It's a very British work, some may feel unable to relate to at first put persevere, a more transatlantic plot emerges which will develop in book 2 and 3 Facebook

I just had a quick look at your book Robert and it looks right up my street. Have a squint at my book, see if you fancy giving it a go and I will happily download yours. Be warned though, my book is a tad racy and embraces some touchy subjects (Nothing illegal or revolting!)

Nicholas Boyland (rhinotrikes) | 11 comments Another note; my own personal feeling about reviews, which I personally rely on as I am a prolific reader. If I see a book which has all 5 star and 2/1 star reviews I am immediate suspicious. Unless the product is Marmite (Vegemite) why should it have such opposing reviews? I will then look at the reviewers in more depth; if someone never reviews anything, why would they suddenly write a damning/glowing review.

Alexandra Bogdanovic | 39 comments Hey, everyone.
I'm up for doing more reviews if anyone is interested in reading and reviewing my memoir, "Truth Be Told: Adam Becomes Audrey." It is only available in paperback and I would prefer if another reviewer is willing to buy it; obviously I am willing to purchase theirs as well. However, for those who only have ebooks, I am willing to swap PDFs.
Visit my official author page at: http://sbpra.com/alexandrabogdanovic/; or my goodreads author profile at: http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/..., and let me know if you're interested.
Thanks.

@ Alexandra: Sorry, I just found your comment now. I have trouble keeping up with group discussions on Goodreads.

Would you consider an acid review as vicious? I personally wouldn't. I used to write satire. If someone would ridicule a book of mine with good reason, I would join him/her laughing. But everyone seems to be so much more touchy than I am.

In my view, constructive criticisism should happen with beta-reading, before a book is out on the market. Once it is out, it should be fair game.

I know that there is no 100% solution to this matter as this is a multifaceted issue.

Lilo --
Personally I believe in honesty and I believe in treating people with respect.
So depending on the forum, not only would I consider an "acid review" to be vicious, I would consider it to be disrespectful, inappropriate and unwarranted.
You said you would be laughing along with someone who ridiculed your book if they did so "with good reason." What constitutes "good reason?" And do you honestly expect that everyone else shares your definition of "good reason?" What isn't hurtful to you could very well destroy someone else.
I don't think reviews should be written with kid gloves, so to speak. But I also think a lot of people take great joy in ripping others apart without "good reason." It's especially easy to do that when you're sitting at a computer keyboard knowing you will not be held accountable for your actions.

Scott Spotson (scottspotson) | 5 comments Hello, what a great idea and in accordance with the moderator's suggestions, I'll be happy to buy a copy of the book I wish to swap with. I will be as positive and honest as possible on my review, erring on the side of finding something great about the book to promote. If I can't post a positive review (i.e. 2 stars or less) I'll let the other author know and won't post a review, but still hope that in the spirit of the exchange, my books would still be reviewed by that paired author if the review by that paired author is otherwise honestly positive. I'll do the same!

I ask for fantasy / science fiction authors, though, because that's my primary interest, and it's easier for me to get excited about books that I love to read.

You may email me privately at author@scottspotson.com.

I would be interested in doing a review swap. I also found a pretty good site for getting reviews if you are looking for a lot of honest reviews. They can be harsh if your book isn't good, however.

Paul Hughes | 12 comments Had a quick look at the site Jeff. I am a bit concerned at a site that charges $50 for each person who reviews your book but also cannot spell correctly in their introduction blurb. Also I cannot find any reviews that they have done (perhaps I can't navigate their site correctly).

message 298: by Paul (new)

Paul Hughes | 12 comments How many people here get their books proof read?
I ask this because I have read quite a few books from the writers on this site and I have loved a lot of them but I am absolutely gobsmacked by the numbers of errors, spelling mistakes, punctuation errors, incorrect usage of tenses in sentences etc. In my opinion this really spoils a book and takes me away from the actual story line.
In my own case I have three proof readers - all of whom have studied grammar and are avid readers. I also chose these people because their normal choice of reading material is not my writing genre - the reason behind this (rightly or wrongly) is that if they enjoy my books then people who actually like fantasy would enjoy them even more. So far, touch wood, I have had great reviews.
I would be interested in the processes that other writers here go through in getting a professional finish to their books.

I completely agree. I try to say on my reviews that the story was good....great....excellent etc but say that my rating is lower than the story merits because of the errors. Hopefully the author will realise that I loved the book content.
