Andy, I want to say something to you. I am a BookSirens reviewer and an author myself. I NEVER take on a review of a book that I hate. If I can't say positive things about a book, that's not the book for me to review. I give 4 and 5 stars. Why? Because I write also and KNOW how hard it can be. You pour yourself into a project and then someone comes along and destroys you in a couple of lines. That is not fair. Be CAREFUL who reviews your book. I've read about this on Reddit, they were specifically talking about Goodreads reviewers so my attention perked up. It was advised that if a reviewer tells you "I may not give you a good review" without having even seen your copy, that's a hatchet job, don't go for it. Go with someone who promises to be FAIR.
That's what I try to do. I respect the author and try to be fair to their work. Not everybody does that, and you can wind up with some reviews that are killers of your sales. That is not a reflection on Goodreads, it is just that I think that some people are very demanding as reviewers and might not take into consideration the hard work of the author. I wish you the best!

I agree. I always find something positive to say about a book. I would never trash a book, though it has been done to me. Goodreads reviews were the primary source of poor reviews for my first book. But when you need reviews, you take the good with the bad. As my writing improved, authors find fewer things they can tear apart. My new book, which has been edited to death, attracted two authors from my author group. They had to find something negative to say, so one said I should have included the smell of Maine's water in the spring, even though my book takes place during a snowstorm. And the other one didn't find depth in my characters. In conclusion, we take a risk by asking for reviews on Goodreads, but sometimes we have no choice.

I wrote a personal memoir confronting life with my mental illnesses. It is a series of letters written to my doctor back in the 1980's when I was first diagnosed. When I gave them to her, I never expected to see her again (she was moving to another state to practice). To my utter surprise she called me from a payphone in the Denver airport to tell me that I needed to publish them!

Well now, I didn't think they were anything special. And they were so very personal, I didn't feel ready to share. So, i put the thought away and went on with my life. 30 years later a pandemic hit. While isolated I pulled that thought back out, dusted it off, and got to work! My prayer for this book is that it helps lift the veil of mystery surrounding mental health crises. Whether you are struggling with mental illness and feeling alone or you love someone who does and just don't understand how they feel this book will help.
