How Many Books Do You Read At Once?

Comments Showing 51-100 of 106 (106 new)    post a comment »

Vivienne It really depends. I often have a few books on-the-go at the same time and will always have an audiobook in the car.

I rarely go above 3 at a time (excluding audio)

Emma Louise If I have to be honest, usually two or three at the same time. Usually I'll have a book that I'm focusing on, then I'll have some easy bedside reading (usually something I've read before) and then a book to read for school because I ALWAYS have to read a book for school.
Emma-Louise

Karen Usually have at least 2 going at once - one non-fiction & one fiction.

Linda I read 3 to 6 books at a time. I listen to one on my mp3 player while walking, usually a classic from Librivox, one by the bed, one in the bathroom, and several from the library, plus one of my own! Wow, guess that is more than 6, but it is no problem, just like watching more than one tv series, your brain adjusts. For the last two years, I have been trying to read all the authors in the library, just one book by authors I have not read before. This is fun, and I am into the B's.

Celise So reading all of your responses I now have another question to ask.

Why would you possibly need a book in the bathroom? I'm not really sure why people have time to read more than a paragraph or two when going to the bathroom.

message 56: by Gary (new) - rated it 5 stars

Gary Why wouldn't you read in the bathroom? Personally, I can get more than a paragraph or two read. Some of us eat Indian food....

Vivienne I always feel the book in the bathroom (or magazine) is an essential. It ca provide a useful distraction even if only a few pages ge read

Jonathan I'm reading 9 different books at the moment, but sometimes I get so absorbed in a novel that I have to read it all at once.

Linda The book in the bathroom is usually a nonfiction book I can absorb only a page or two at a time or if I start to really like it I upgrade it's status!

message 60: by Bob (new) - rated it 4 stars

Bob I always have 2-5 books going at any time. I usually like to read 1 fiction and 1 non-fiction book at all times, but sometimes I get interested in other books and just have to read them as well.

message 61: by [deleted user] (new)

Usually I read up to 4 books. My "record" was 10 books in currently-reading list at the same time. And I read them all for three-ten pages per day.

Celise Thank you, Gary, for that response about the bathrooms :P

Lizzie Tannenbaum Usually I read from 3-4 books at a time. With my kindle it's easy to listen to 2-3 books in addition.

Gary Celise wrote: "Thank you, Gary, for that response about the bathrooms :P"

You're welcome. I keep a couple of books and magazines in the bathroom for myself... and for guests. Just that's being a good host, isn't it?

Gaenolee Usually a couple of books; one a novel, and one 'serious' reading (right now it's "A Feast for Crows" and "The History of God". However, I'm also always reading the latest National Geographic, the Washington Post, and the New York Times Sunday edition.

Currer Jean At first I used to start one book, then find another that was just as cool and go to read that until I was reading about 4 books at a time and not actually finishing anu of them. Now I've learned to scale back and read one or two books at a time, just enough so I wont' frustrate myself over what to read.

Celise I've started reading more like I used to. I'm reading A Feast For Crows, a book about Henry Viii (Philippa Gregory), and 3 young adult novels as well. I can never read just one YA novel at a time because generally I find them lacking.

Maggie I usually read/listen to several books. I have audio books on my laptop that I listen to when I play games. I have audio books on my phone that I listen to at work. I have books on my Kindles that I read when I get tire of listening to audio books. I also have several anthologies on on the shelf above my bathtub for when I want a long, lazy soaking. Right now I am listening to Before They Are Hanged by Abercrombie, and it is all I want to read at the moment. It has taken precedence over all other books at this time. It is a very well produced audio book!

Maggie Linda wrote: "I usually am actively reading 3 audible books, 1 kindle, and at least 3 print books at one time, with others that I've started but allowed to repeatedly slip to the bottom of the reading pile. My ..."
Linda - I do the exact same thing! I have several books that I started reading, good books, but I always find something else that grabs my attention more. I need to be diligent and finish them, but there are too damn many good books out there!

Gary Curious: Do the audio books you guys listen to count as books you read on Goodreads?

I listen to audio books when doing the dishes or otherwise doing something mindless, but I don't consider them "reading" so much as just entertainment/distraction.

Raymond Rachel wrote: "i read one book at a time, but i go through about 800 pages a day, so i can read 2 or 3 books a day, depending on length"

Really? Incredible.

message 72: by Raymond (new) - added it

Raymond I'm pushing around 8 at the minute, constantly starting more though. Wondering what's the limit? I should probably stop starting new ones and finish the current batch...

VJP84CA I used to read three or four at a time, but that left me only half-reading books before getting distracted by a new one, so I've tried to limit myself to one.

message 74: by Jaime (new)

Jaime I usually read 3-5 books at a time. They are always of different genres. I will read 1-2 each day and then rotate.

message 75: by Jim (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jim Swike I am a three hour a day LIRR commuter and started carrying two in case I finshed one on the way while commuting. Now I am up to three. Now I read a chapter from three at the same time. Keeps my reading interesting.

Brett 3-7 normally. 1 audio, 1 physical and 3-5 on my kobo. Having a bunch of books available electronically helps as in the old days I'd tend to bring 3 books with me where ever I went, providing many quizzical looks from those that could not understand the need to flip between things being read. With the kobo it is less obvious to the masses.

Currer Jean It's so hard to read these days. I see so many books that I want to read, new realeases, and then there are books that I haven't red but would really like to try. So I'm reading two books, one new realeases and one a little older so that I can read and still keep in touch with modern day books.

Stepheny I read usually 3 at a time. But occasionally a 4th.
I find I can read a different format at different times... For example, when I am cleaning, doing housework, laundry, cooking etc, I enjoy my audio books. When I am in bed and my hubby is trying to sleep, I like my Kindle so I don't have to have the lights on and keep him up. Then I have a physical copy of a book to read whenever I have the time, lunch break, doctor's office waiting room etc... I feel like getting a break from a book helps my brain digest what I have read. It works for me, but it definitely isn't for everyone! LOL

Docorangutan Hmmm, in my teenage years it was normally 6 books at once, these days 3 or 4 is normal. In common with most of the posts above I normally have a range of books on the go at once to suit my mood including something scientific and something fantastical (with a deep bow to Mr.Pratchett).

R.,

Alex Cortez Because my interests are so far reaching, I have to be involved in at least 5 or 6 books at a time. Annoying sometimes, and then again, I love it. I'm glad I'm not the only one with this 'problem', lol.

message 82: by Lisa (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lisa Taylor I usually read one fiction and one non-fiction at a time. I don't like getting multiple stories really going at once because I feel too scattered, but sometimes I'm in the mood for entertainment while other times I'm in the mood for learning. So when I read one NF and one F at the same time, i don't really feel like i'm reading multiple books at once. I am, but they feel so fundamentally different that it doesn't feel the same to me as reading two or three fiction books at the same time.

Kelly Pace I've never been able to read more than one book at a time or I will start getting the stories confused lol. I wish I could read more than 1 as there are so many books I have sitting on my to-read shelf.

Olivia "So many books--so little time."" I'm a one book at a time person.

Georgia I only read one book at a time. This way I'm not reading books over long periods of time, which can lead to me forgetting some of the earlier details. I'll only read two books if I need to read one for book club or something.

message 86: by Jaime (new)

Jaime I have not done that in a while. I may try it again.

message 87: by CD (new) - rated it 3 stars

CD At the moment I have 5 books going that are not work related. Three are e-books.

With e-books I can shift back and forth with the tap of a button (or two).

I've always read (or at least since I started paying attention) several books at the same time. I'd get books as a kid from the library and read them 'all at once.'

At any given time between books(too often tomes) that are professional or reference, favorites that I read and re-read, new books that I start and often lay down for weeks before returning, I may have a couple dozen books with markers in them.

Hard to keep them straight? No. Just like switching channels on TV(I am in a watching almost no television phase again) or remembering the story line from week to week in several favorite 'shows'. You just pick up where you left off.

23skadoo40 Love to read a variety of subjects. "Time, never enough time!" I usually read 2 to 3 new books going at any given time; listen to audiobooks while doing housework & at night with my husband as we drift off to sleep; Now that I'm school I have less time for pleasure reading due to the course work; Are re-reads included? If so that brings the count up to 4. I get my books from the library mostly. If I love a book, I'll buy it to keep. My library card is full. (We are allowed to take out 30 items at a time.) I read it, return and take out another book. If a story draws me in immediately, I'll just finish it right off. Series, I read them when I can get them. And yes, I plead guilty: I have a stack of books on my night stand. It doesn't go away, causing I'm adding & subtracting books all the time. I'm loving LARGE Print, helps alleviate eyestrain.

message 89: by Kris (new) - rated it 4 stars

Kris I usually have two going-- one audio book that I listen to while I exercise or walk my dog, and one text book.

Glynn Depends on what is going on and how busy I am, but I usually read 2-4 books at the same time, though sometimes it can be as high as 6. This would normally be split between fiction and non-fiction, but maybe more if I am studying for professional exams or using audiobooks.

Daniela I'm reading six books . It can be a little bit confusing, but I like read many stories at the same time.

message 92: by Jaime (new)

Jaime I am currently now reading five books.

message 93: by Emma (new) - rated it 5 stars

Emma Blackshaw The amount of books I read at a time usually depends on how much work / study I need to get done. Summer holidays: about 10 books a week. School: the books I need to read for my classes and a fun one for distraction. It's usually around 5 books at a time, mostly in different languages. English, Spanish and French, and from time to time, Catalan. Wish I had more time to read.

message 94: by K.C. (new) - rated it 4 stars

K.C. Hawke I tend to read 2 to 3 books. I would like to focus, but sometimes I'm just not always in the mood for the same thing. However, that being said, when I find a reallly good author, I have no trouble committing my time to finishing to just one book at a time.

message 95: by Holly (last edited May 05, 2013 01:47PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Holly I read this book series after I had watched the first season of the Game of Thrones on HBO. I could not believe how closely the storyline of the show matched the book. That rarely happens. I have now read all of the series and am anxiously awaiting the next book.

message 96: by Ken (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ken One at a time. I give it all my focus, so more than one is not reasonable.

message 97: by B.C. (new) - rated it 5 stars

B.C. Brown Typically, three books at a time. I'll read one exclusively for a day or two, then switch to the next, and then the last.

I do listen to audiobooks, but only when at the gym (so that is an added two books a week, roughly). I don't listen to audiobooks in the car; that is my quiet time.

message 98: by Timothy (last edited Nov 28, 2013 05:30PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Timothy I usually have anywhere from 2-5 books going at one time. I've been listening to this series on audio book when I'm driving, and I have a couple of big non-fiction/literature books going. I read those slowly and work through smaller books in between from a variety of genres and subjects. And oh yeah, I might have to make that as many as 6 since I've taken to reading a book with my daughter (we take turns reading to each other).

Deeptanshu Generally I read two books at a time but if my interest in one flags I might easily start on a third.

message 100: by [deleted user] (new)

I hate reading more than 1 book at a time. Never more than 2.
