I have a question hoping you all might be able to help me with. I recently self-published my first horror novel, A Frightful Harvest, on Amazon/Kindle. I've never gotten into the e-reader thing. I'm too much in love with the feel and smell of a paperback in my hands, I guess. My question is for those of you who use Kindle a lot. Do you find that the free books provide the same quality as traditionally priced novels? I started out selling the ebook version of my novel at $2.99 and recently discounted it down to $0.99 for the holidays. But I've been flirting with the idea of making it free, at least for a limited time, to increase readership. I'm in my fifties now, though, and something tells me that anything you get for free probably isn't good - a sort of "you get what you pay for" type of thing. And I can't help but feel that giving something away that you've put two years of your life into creating only cheapens it. Maybe that's my age talking. I don't know. Any feedback you can provide would be appreciated.

@Anthony As it is for me, a free ebook has way much more chances to be "purchased" and way much fewer chances to be read someday than a paid one, and vice-versa.

Usually, the only books I actually pay out for are the rest of a series where one or more books were free and I really liked how they were written.
From that perspective, a stand-alone book really isn't going to do much for increasing "readership" with me. The only advantage you get from me reading is a potentially good rating. But getting there will have more to do with how much the blurb and cover catch my attention.

I've found a few gems in the free books. I often find within a few pages whether I will enjoy the author's work. I usually go at least 10% to 20% of the way into a book that isn't catching my attention before I relegate it to the "Did Not Finish" shelf and go on to the next one.

I don't automatically discount something offered for free as being subpar. Sometimes books are just temporarily free, so that definitely doesn't mean they're lower quality, other times the free books just give you a chance to sample the author and lead to want to read more of them. Granted, a lot of the free books I've gotten don't end up being 5* reads for me, but at least half of them (that I actually get around to reading) end up as at least 3*.
Thank you Seb, Andy and Alan. Lots of helpful feedback here. I appreciate it. A lot of articles I have written state to list your first book as free to gain readership, but I've read articles from some authors who claim people devalue an author who doesn't charge for his work. So, it's a fine line. Thanks again for taking the time to response. You've given me a lot to go on.
