Komal (k0k0) | 17 comments Genre: Non-fiction, Travel-Writing
Author: Unknown

We read a book back in 6th grade titled Travel Writing which contained brief excerpts of various authors' travel descriptions.
What I'm looking for is the full story of one of the excerpts in that book. This excerpt was titled Resisting Temptations - which is not the given title of the original piece - and it was a descriptive writing about two stranded mountain climbers trying to find their way up (or down) a snow-jagged mountain. The excerpt only touched upon the feelings and and thoughts of just one of the present characters (presumably, the author of the original literature) narrating his insufferable hunger and ever increasing desires to turn to cannibalism every time he sneaked a glance at his companion.

The catch is, I don't know what the original writing is titled nor can I recall the author's name. I tried to find the book via finding the Travel Catalogue we read, but I'm unable to find the collection on Goodreads either.
It would be most helpful if someone can aid me in searching for that catalogue and/or the specific story of the hungry mountain-climbers.

What I know/remember:
- The entire collection was titled 'Travel Writing'
- The first story in that book was about a woman's first experience flying in a space-shuttle. This story was titled 'Lift-Off!'
- The story I'm looking for, about the two mountaineers, was titled 'Resisting Temptations'
It was not more than three pages in the collection.
- Another excerpt in the catalogue was about a train ride somehow associated with Mahatma Gandhi.
- Another narrated a sea-diver's experience and I faintly recall that he was very over whelmed by colourful deep-sea lichens in that story.
- The collection wasn't very thick and the cover had a splash of orange.

I have a slight suspicion that the particular mountain narrative I'm looking for is linked to Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary's expedition to the Everest - but that's just a hunch of mine and I could be entirely wrong.

Thank you so much for your attention!

Cheryl (cherylllr) Sounds like serious stuff for 11-12 year old children! Unfortunately I have no clue what this might be.

Komal (k0k0) | 17 comments Now that I think back to it, It was pretty mature for our level. But I really enjoyed it nonetheless and most of the time the teacher read it out to the class.

Oh bummer. I guess it's a harder book to find than many. Thank you for the response though :)

Komal, I don't know this one either, but I'll be working at the library today so I'll poke around and see what I can find. I take it these were all non-fiction essays and not (fictional) short stories?

Oh, duh. I see you said nonfiction in your post. Sorry!

I have my fingers crossed for you finding them.

Darcy (drokka) | 211 comments I don't suppose your school would have a record of the curriculum for that class? This might be another avenue to pursue if it wasn't too long ago, or if that teacher is still there.

Komal (k0k0) | 17 comments That's the first thing I did, D. I live in a different country now so I wasn't sure if the school was even active. I got the number and called to discover my English Lit teacher had retired a couple of years ago. I asked if they were still teaching 'Travel Writing' to the 6th graders, but apparently there's no such book in any part of the curriculum now. Sigh.

Thanks a lot for the tip though! :)

Just noticed your earlier post...in which country were you living when you read the book? It may give us a clue as to where the book was published.

Komal (k0k0) | 17 comments Sharjah, UAE. I think the book was a British publish. I THINK.

Well, this is turning out to be more difficult than I had hoped. Here's one possibility: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Collins-Reade...

(there is not a GR record for this book but I'll add one momentarily) Unfortunately I can't find a list of the stories in it, but it was a UK pub and seems to be a school textbook kind of thing. So, maybe the cover looks familiar?

Edit: Miles Ahead: a Cascades Collection of Travel Writing for the GR link.

Komal (k0k0) | 17 comments No, it's not the same cover. Drats. I don't have a clear memory of the cover but I know I'll instantly recognize it when I come across it.
I wish Amazon had listed out some part of the contents as well. I still can't confirm the book.

But you've gone way far than I'd have expected Andria. Please don't go out of your way to look for this. I think we've done all we can. I've sent personal messages to a couple of old class-mates from back then and I'm hoping they can provide some new information.

Thank you so, so very much for all the help! I appreciate it a lot! <3 =)

Oh, it's no trouble at all. Seriously, I love the "thrill of the hunt" lol. And I'm a librarian, so this is technically work-related, and I'm at work today anyway, so.... :)

I did find this http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid... - where someone references your book in the forum (post on bottom of page 1) so the book definitely exists...somewhere out there! Let us know if you hear anything from your former classmates, and I'll keep poking around.

Komal (k0k0) | 17 comments Oh, I'm glad then it's not too much of a bother. :)

Andria, that user is ME! Omg LOL! Used to be an avid anime watcher.
Good search skills though!

Yes, I await their replies and in my spare time, I'll go to some further lengths and let you know if and when I've found the book. Thanks again!
