I've finished The Children of Men, which was a pretty good read.
Just a chapter into my March classics read, The History of the Kings of Britain which, despite it's title, doesn't so far appear to be a true and accurate history of anything! Where's that Trade Descriptions Act, this is the literary equivalent of the horsemeat scandal!! >;-)

I have the Ken Follett book on my TBR list I like his writing. I read the book AND saw TBEMH. I honestly liked the movie better, but the book was good too.

Yes, but I think I was expecting mild exaggeration not complete fabrication! I read fiction & non-fiction in quite a different mindset, so I'm having to readjust how I approach this.

I have just got to King Leir (who founded Leicester, BTW) which is, indirectly, Shakespeare's source for King Lear. So out of this some good will come.

In the Crazy Challenge Connection I am doing the Zodiac challenge (meet certain astrological criteria), the Connections challenge (Pick a word from the previous book's title or author's name and the next book to read must have that word), and Countdown (read 13 books from 2013, 12 books, from 2012, 11 books from 2011, etc.).

I just picked some challenges from dozens that they concoct, and try to make them coincide with the You'll Love This One!! challenges.

YLTO!! is my "home group" though. I have the best discussions and fun here!

Be careful!! There are so many interessting sounding challenges, that you may over extend yourself. That is what I did at first. Now I am a bit more selective.

This year I am making sure that my other challenges overlap with my YLTO!! ABC challenge, which is the most extensive and ...how can one say it differently?....challenging.

message 117: by [deleted user] (new)

Agree, I joined loads of groups in a rush of enthusiasm, then found I couldn't keep up with the reading. It's great that there's so much choice, but it can be a bit too much at times.

The other one are in various places so I do not get stuck waiting for something/someone with nothing to do. I rarely go pass page 30 before they get promoted to main book. I also usually read a short story between novels.

Short Stories: Blood Bank by Tania Huff

Library/Borrowed: La fiancée américaine by Eric Dupont
Phone: The First Confessor by Terry Goodkind
Zumba Bag: Tripwire by Lee Child

I just finished "Lugalbanda," also from ancient Sumeria. Really from two ancient poems originally recorded in cuneiform on clay tablet. I don't know of any other general audience versions available out there. Drawing upon available academic sources, the author attempts to convey the meaning in the language rather than a literal word-for-word translation. While clearly aimed at a younger audience, I enjoyed its simple story and beautiful illustrations. I also just loved reading a story with such an ancient past. I forgot to say, Lugalbanda is thought to be the father of Gilgamesh and is referred to in the Epic of Gilgamesh... "Offspring of Lugalbanda, Gilgamesh is strong to perfection..." Lugalbanda The Boy Who Got Caught Up in a War An Epic Tale From Ancient Iraq by Kathy Henderson Lugalbanda: The Boy Who Got Caught Up in a War: An Epic Tale From Ancient Iraq

Hmm, maybe I'll read it any way since I liked the movie. I did have that niggling thought cross my mind about the book probably being better. But hubby brought dvd home from library all excited, so I was happy to watch it with him. Very good with large bowl of hot, buttery popcorn :)

message 141: by [deleted user] (new)

I have just given up in disgust. first time in ages that's happened. I made it through 50 pages of The Anglo Files: A Field Guide to the British by Sarah Lyall before giving up in disgust. Supposed to be amusing and perceptive. It's not. It's full of cliche and stereotype and in no way represents the country that I know & love. Maybe it appeals to the American market as it just reinforces all the preconceived ideas that the Americans have of us. Complete tosh.

Even if the first is not one of my favorites, it was OK. I do know few authors write masterpiece after masterpiece, and I do know that I enjoy his writing style. I have begun the latter, and I immediately feel much more comfortable. This is more to my taste!
