Jim (jimmaclachlan) I'm not familiar with your library system, but I am familiar with software enhancements that make a previously good program unusable. I sympathize.

message 52: by Barbara (new)

Barbara Brown (librarylizard) | 7 comments I don't think this website is specific to my library but it is utilized by librarians and students mostly, I think. Thanks for the sympathy. I always say "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

I am trying to locate where the City of Bones discussion will take place here (?) so I can invite a new friend who wants to participate. I can send her a link if I know I am in the right group.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Lady Lavender, I created 2 topics, spoilers & non-spoilers, but in the common reads for you & then saw your topic, so I deleted it. OK?

City of Bones, no spoilers:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/5...

With spoilers:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/5...

In the 'no spoiler' topic, I put instructions for using the spoiler tags. Do the rest of you think this makes a spoiler topic redundant?

message 55: by Werner (new)

Werner | 2026 comments Thanks, Jim! (We can see how the use of spoiler tags works this time, if some people use them, and compare it with a spoiler thread to see how we like each method.)

You said you don't get time to watch movies on TV.. I don't know if that's true now but you can try [ vplay.ro ]

message 57: by Werner (new)

Werner | 2026 comments Thanks for the link, Teo. (And sorry to be responding to it so late; I'm WAY behind on my Goodreads updates. :-( ) For some reason, it didn't turn out to clickable (at least, not on my home computer), but I appreciate the thoughtfulness!

As a whole, it's still true that I don't get much time to watch movies on TV, and my wife and I don't go to theaters very often, either. We'd hoped to watch the upcoming Breaking Dawn, Part 1 movie at the local theater when it came out, but that won't be feasible, after all. :-(

Wow, The Entity sounds really interesting. Also, you're not the first person I've seen to recommend Insidious. I've been meaning to check it out. I'm very skeptical of modern horror films; they tend to copy each other right and left, but I've heard great things about this one.

message 59: by Werner (new)

Werner | 2026 comments Later this morning, I'm off to Palm Beach Atlantic Univ. for a library conference, and I'll be gone all week. With Jim as co-mod, I know I leave you all in good hands while I'm away!

It's been about seven months since the original post on this topic (I tend to read back over old posts), but if anyone's still reading, I loved 'The Entity' when I read it ages ago. If anyone is looking for 'vintage' 70's horror, you can't go wrong with 'Audrey Rose' by Frank D. FeLitta or 'The Sentinel' by Jeffrey Konvitz. The latter scared the wits out of me for weeks.

I agree, it's always fun to recognize where a writer is talking about. I am from the Pacific Northwest as well a couple of hours out of Seattle. When I see a book that is set there I admit I tend to be drawn to it. It's interesting to see things in a book that are familiar and comforting like weather, geographic landmarks, etc.

I am a writer myself and so far anyway, I've stuck to the familiar and write stories based on around here. That doesn't mean I always will but for now... you know what they say, write what you know :)

Agreed. I'm originally from Ohio and a lot of my stories take place there. The rest tend to take place in Kansas, where I've hung my hat for almost 20 years. I do have a novel in the works that is set in the fictitious town of Cedar Point, Oregon, however (I needed a coastal town where it rains all the time). That's not exactly Seattle, but I hope you'll be drawn to it when it is published!

I would check it out :) What genre is it?

message 64: by Nikki (new)

Nikki Palm | 9 comments Hi my name is Nicole:) I thought I had already posted in this thread, but couldn't find my post lol. I must have posted in something else. Well, as I said my name is Nicole and I am twenty-eight years old. Unfortunately I will be twenty-nine in just a few weeks :(

I am a mommy of two girls ages eleven and three. They are totally cool diva chicks with lots of spunk.

I am a YA author by trade and passion. I just released my first book... YAY!

I am blind and have been for around ten years now. It's kind of rediculous actually. I am kind of a dork and have always had a fear of the dark. As luck would have it, the dark is all I know now. Carma? Maybe, I just think it's the universes way of playing a really bad joke lol.

I have only been on Good reads for a few months but I love it so far. It is tons better than Facebook, not nearly as much drama. I love meeting new people so feel free and send me a friend request and we can chat :)

message 65: by Deb (new)

Deb Atwood | 429 comments Hi Nicole,

That sound like a really interesting premise for a story: a blind person afraid of the dark. Wow. I once knew a firefighter afraid of fires, and I thought that would make a good character, too.

Congratulations on your new book. (I just released a book myself, so I know it's exciting.) Sightless Spirits sounds interesting.

thank you congrats on yours as well:)

I never really thought about that but yeah it would make a good story. I'll have to play around with that lol

I am going to head on over to your profile and see what your book is;)

message 67: by Terri (new)

Terri Bruce (terribruce) Welcome Nicole! Sounds like you have a lot going on - raising kids, dealing with the loss of your vision, AND releasing your first book! Wow! That is a full plate. Congrats on the book! Just released my first one (August 1st) as well! We've got a whole bunch of debut authors here - LOL, we should throw ourselves a party!

message 68: by Deb (new)

Deb Atwood | 429 comments What a great idea! A party thread!

message 69: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) There is a fairly new group for "General Craft & DIY" here on GR.
http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/6...

It's very small right now. If anyone is interested & would like to join, it would be great.

message 70: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Has anyone else seen "Mockingbird Lane"? It's a remake of the Munsters. The first episode was pretty good. Some great special effects. Lily's dress was fantastic.

message 71: by Werner (new)

Werner | 2026 comments My oldest daughter and her husband will be arriving here around noon tomorrow (they live in Australia), to spend about a week with us. Naturally, while they're here we want to spend as much time as possible with them; so I don't expect to be online much if at all during the time they're here. But I plan to be back on April 23, and will hope to catch up quickly with all the discission that goes on in the meantime!

message 72: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Enjoy, Werner! Do they have kids?

message 73: by Werner (new)

Werner | 2026 comments Thanks, Jim! No, they don't have any kids yet (just two dogs, who stayed in Australia with Tony's parents :-) ).

message 74: by Werner (new)

Werner | 2026 comments After around 4:00 p.m. tomorrow, I'll be offline for a week or so. Barb and I are leaving early on Monday to visit family (where, as usual, I'll have very limited computer access); I plan to take advantage of that time away to put my computer into the shop in the meantime. (I suspect that it has some malware issues.) But I can't do that any later than Saturday afternoon. :-(

I'll be back next weekend, eager to catch up on all that I missed!

message 75: by Werner (new)

Werner | 2026 comments Correction to the above message; we've had a slight change of plans. We'll actually be heading out early on Tuesday morning; since we're so swamped with things to do here, we decided to give ourselves Monday as a catch-up day. That means I won't have to turn my computer in for debugging until Monday evening. :-)

message 76: by Werner (new)

Werner | 2026 comments Tomorrow, I'll be offline pretty much all day. At 5:30 in the morning, I need to report to the hospital for hernia repair surgery. I'm actually in very good spirits about it, and expect to feel much better by this time tomorrow!

message 77: by Deb (new)

Deb Atwood | 429 comments Good luck! Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

message 78: by Werner (new)

Werner | 2026 comments Thanks, Deb!

message 79: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Good luck, Werner. They've come a long way since I got mine repaired over 50 years ago. My step father had one fixed a decade or so ago & barely seemed to notice. Hope yours goes the same as his.

message 80: by Werner (new)

Werner | 2026 comments Thanks, Jim! The surgery was a complete success, and I got home last night around 8:00. I'll be off work for the rest of the week (and probably longer) recovering, but that'll actually be something like a vacation. :-)

message 81: by Robyn (new)

Robyn Oakley (robynoakley) | 5 comments Hi, I'm new to goodreads but love it so far. I love to read anything that can keep my attention & that usually ends up being mostly supernatural/fantasy books. I love getting lost in a world that ignites my imagination. Glad to join this group =)

message 82: by Robert (new)

Robert Roberts (goodreadscomrobertroberts) Nice to meet you Robyn. I have been a member of Goodreads for a few years but just joined this group a few days ago.

message 83: by Werner (new)

Werner | 2026 comments Robyn and Robert, glad to have you in our group! Sorry I didn't welcome you earlier. :-( I try to keep tabs on the "Introduce yourself" thread, and post a welcome to our newbies every month or so; but I don't get back to this thread as often.

On Wednesday, I plan to leave for a short vacation, and don't expect to be back until the following Sunday. During that time, I'll be offline pretty much entirely; but I'll catch up when I get back!

message 84: by Werner (new)

Werner | 2026 comments Barring anything unforeseen, Barb and I will be heading out early on Wednesday to spend a few days visiting family. I'll be mostly offline while we're gone. But we plan to be back late Sunday; and I'll look forward to catching up on posts and messages that I've missed while we're away!

message 85: by Werner (new)

Werner | 2026 comments Starting tomorrow, I'll be offline for a few days. My wife and I are heading out early tomorrow morning to spend a few more days with her side of the family before the school year starts in again. But I expect to be back sometime on Sunday afternoon.

message 86: by Werner (new)

Werner | 2026 comments Although I haven't been officially diagnosed, I think I have strep throat. Two of my grandsons had it last week, I've been exposed, and the symptoms are there. :-( I stayed home from church this morning, and plan to just rest quietly at home today in the hopes of throwing it off, since next week will be a grueling one at work, and busy in other ways as well. (Bluefield College's Fall semester is winding down toward final exams, and the library will be open extra hours.)

From Tuesday on until around the middle of next week, I expect to be mostly offline, as far as Goodreads and other non-work-related pursuits are concerned (except during meal breaks at work). After five years of widowhood, my middle daughter is getting married on Saturday, Dec. 3 (Yay!), and we have family coming in for the big day, and staying for a few days afterwards.

message 87: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Hope you feel better soon Werner and fit and well for the wedding.

message 88: by Werner (new)

Werner | 2026 comments Thanks, Rachel!

message 89: by Werner (new)

Werner | 2026 comments Barb and I will be leaving for Australia tomorrow morning, heading out to go to the airport at a quarter to eight. We won't get back home until July 11, and I'll be mostly offline until then. But I'll be looking forward to reconnecting with Goodreads, and this group, when we get back!

message 90: by Lloyd (new)

Lloyd Scott (lloydthewriter) | 30 comments Werner, safe travels, and enjoy. I Have not been on here in awhile, due to pursuing my MBA in healthcare administration.

Have fun.

message 91: by Werner (last edited Jul 31, 2017 04:57PM) (new)

Werner | 2026 comments Thanks, Lloyd; we did have fun and safe travels! (Sorry to be so slow in getting back to you; we just got home few days ago, and the process of catching up, both online and off line, is a long one.) I know how demanding and time-consuming a master's program can be, and hope that yours is going well!

message 92: by Werner (new)

Werner | 2026 comments I've finally started loading some of the Australia trip pictures onto the Pictures section of my profile, at this link: https://www.goodreads.com/photo/autho... , now that we found the memory stick they're stored on a few days ago. But it's proving to be a VERY slow process: first they have to uploaded individually onto my PC (and there are over 100 of them), and then I have to download selected ones to Goodreads, one at a time. As yet, only five have been downloaded, starting with the eighth picture at the link (the others are older); but more will follow gradually as I get time to go through the process.

message 93: by Werner (new)

Werner | 2026 comments I've FINALLY finished posting all of the Australia trip pictures that Goodreads will allow in the photos section of my profile. For the convenience of anyone interested, here's that link again: https://www.goodreads.com/photo/autho... .

message 94: by Werner (new)

Werner | 2026 comments Barb and I have been blessed with another grandchild! Emory Michael was born around five o'clock yesterday afternoon, and both mother and baby are doing fine. We haven't seen him yet, but we'll be bringing the other grandchildren to meet him and visit Deborah later this afternoon. While their parents are still staying at the hospital, we've been taking care of the them (and will be continuing to at least through tomorrow), which requires me to spend the night at their house. So that's why I haven't been online as much as usual this weekend (and will continue not to be for at least a day or two).

message 95: by Werner (new)

Werner | 2026 comments Our group has a new co-moderator, since after several years of service Paula Cappa has chosen to step down for some needed rest and more time with her family. She remains a valued member of the group; we're all grateful to her for her contributions, and wish her continued success with her writing.

Our new co-mod is Deb Atwood, who's no stranger to those of us who take part in our group's annual common read. We're grateful for Deb's willingness to step up to the plate!

message 96: by Werner (new)

Werner | 2026 comments Starting at roughly 2:00 p.m. tomorrow, I'll be mostly offline for about three weeks (and don't expect to read much, or at all, during that time, either). Our oldest daughter and her husband will be visiting us from Australia, and bringing our newest grandchild (who'll be a year old on March 29) with them; so we want to spend all the time we possibly can with them. But though I don't expect to be posting, I do hope to at least check my Goodreads updates periodically (so they don't pile up too formidably), and I'll be thinking of you all!

Rosemarie | 118 comments Have a fantastic time with your family, Werner! I hope the weather cooperates too.

message 100: by Werner (new)

Werner | 2026 comments Will do, Elisabeth! Thanks.
