ABANDONED. Teens during WW2 book?

We were made to read a book in junior high that took place in Europe during WW2. Man tells the story as a flashback, when he was a teenager displaced by the war. He was on his own and met a younger girl, also on her own and they traveled together, dodging bombs, sleeping in abandoned buildings and eventually rescuing an orphan boy. The narrator fell in love with this girl, but her father (when they reunited) told him she was too young, and she said "he's just a friend," and the guy ran, devastated out of the hospital.
