Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Have they done the half time show yet? I'm somewhat tempted to see it for what Beyoncé may bring to things. I don't think I recall many Cold Play songs though.

message 3202: by Charlotte, Cheesy Cakes (new)

Charlotte (charkro) | 1798 comments Truthfully, my family could care less who wins--at least most of the time. We watch it for the commercials, actually ... and we decided that the one with the singing sheep was the best. XD

And yeah, it's about the food, too. One of the few times per year that we eat junk food for dinner (this time, we had nachos with dip). =)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Oooooh, nachos and cheeeeeeeeeeeese. *slight drool to the lips before wiping it away quickly*.

Charlotte (charkro) | 1798 comments Yup, we make this awesome cheese dip that has ground meat, nacho cheese soup, picante sauce, refried beans, and cream of mushroom soup. =)

message 3207: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Food and Halftime show is as far into things I get on that front. And the occasional commercial or two.

message 3208: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Not helping the drool situation, must needs find something to eat here lol.

Rachel Smith (rlsauthor) | 626 comments I only watched the year the Saints were in it. And I had to watch it by myself, in New York, with nary a Saints fan to be found to celebrate with...

Yesterday, my mom and I finished Gilmore Girls then my sister and I started on season 2 of The 100.

message 3210: by Cindi (new)

Cindi (ourtrumpcard) | 534 comments I usually fall asleep during the game, but BF's kids were here and excited about the game...they were going for the Panthers, I chose the Broncos because my fav sister lives in Colorado. I don't know too much about football either but BF seemed to like telling me about it ;) I didn't think we overate or anything, however I was up all night kinda sick :(... I thought the halftime show pretty much sucked - the sound was way off - and so did the commercials. No Bud Clysdales!!!

message 3211: by Myst (new)

Myst | 734 comments Valentines day is on Sunday. We usually have a 'family' meal at our house on Sundays to spend time with dad's female friend. I asked a few days ago what the plan would be since it IS v-day...

Got the answer today that dad, his lady friend and 2 of her siblings would be eating at our house. We made a meal plan with no problems...except dessert.

He doesn't want *anything* for dessert. Not even those angel food cake/pound cake circles that you put whipped cream and strawberries on, where our guests could choose to just eat strawberries.

So do I ignore him and offer the above where one could pick and choose which part/s they want to eat, or not offer anything at all?

message 3212: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments I always say offer everything to everyone and who wishes to partake go for it and those that don't, don't have to either. I mean no offense to your dad or anything. But he can't speak for other's sweet toothes if they wouldn't mind a few strawberries and cake for the holiday.

message 3213: by Myst (new)

Myst | 734 comments Well I know his lady friend works hard to not gain weight...which is why I'm not making a huge giant chocolatey cake (which probably wouldn't all be eaten anyways - we're not huge cake people), but for him to turn down fruit I thought was beyond belief. There is nothing healthier for 'sugar' than fruit!

Plus with the exception of thanksgiving-christmas, I almost *never* bake except for birthdays, so offering dessert when it's more than just 3-4 people just seems rude.

message 3214: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Your call Myst. I just come from a fam of stuff being made or brought, and the only saying is "you know where to find it and get what you want". Some folks get a little this or a little of that. Or no sweets at all. Just their call.

And I guess I would think it be a little more awkward after dinner everyone has eaten and then it's like okay done with that now it's time for ya'll to go, even if the convo is good and everyone still kind of socializing. So having the dessert always seemed like a way to keep that mingle vibe going to me.

message 3215: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Smith (rlsauthor) | 626 comments That's a tough one. I'd still have it as an option, but you don't have to make a big deal out of it.

message 3216: by Carol (new)

Carol (ladycarol63) | 39 comments I'm with Rachel. I almost always have some kind of mixed fruit available for those that want something "sweet" but not the calories when I have home parties for Pampered Chef, Origima Owl and other such home parties. But my family is big on desserts for any and all occasions.

Good LUCK!

Slick | 456 comments Ughhh single on valentines day is the worst..

message 3218: by Carol (new)

Carol (ladycarol63) | 39 comments Been single on Valentines day for many a year now. But then it never was one of favorites since grade school. I was the "tubby" child in school so I got all the elephant and other such kinds of valentines in my school valentine box if any at all. Not any good memories for that day. Even my late husband just tossed it aside. "Don't need to give you something for that day as you have ME." Jerk!

message 3219: by Slick (new)

Slick | 456 comments Ugghh hate it sooooo much..
I feel your pain Carol !
A lady should be treated like one but i wouldn't have the stones to say what that last guy said haha not unless i'd bought something really expensive to give later... :)

Oh, Carol, how horrible for you! *offers a HUGE hug*

Can't say that I'm terribly impressed with your late husband, either.

Hulk hugs Carol. That is just like nothing you ever say to someone you love.

And been single many a year as well for the holiday. But my fam has always looked at it as a way to show some appreciation for each other. We get each other cards and the mini sampler boxes of chocolate. Just this year it's Pizza Hut and trying out those triple chocolate brownies.

So I always advise turn V day into a love day in general for those you related to and most especially yourself. Doesn't always have to be about the romantic love.

message 3223: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Smith (rlsauthor) | 626 comments I've had a significant other on Valentine's Day once. My sister, never. We made our own tradition many years ago. Microwave Chinese, a bottle of our favorite sparkling wine that we drink from champagne flutes, Little Debbie heart cakes, and Will & Grace.

This year, we're binging the new X-Files, though. On Saturday, since The Walking Dead comes back Sunday.

message 3227: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Oh the first post is just letting folks know what the thread is about and just a starter question. Any questions after that are new discussions to be had.

So for instance Kat you can post a question in your last post there if you click edit and whoever is interested in the topic swings by and answers it and it goes on from there.

Shari-amor | 5275 comments QOTD: Has there been a book that you've reread and felt totally different about it!? Be it positive, negative or an indifferent experience. Which book and why do you think you felt differently about it!?

Jennifer | 1747 comments >.> nope

message 3230: by K-Gorgeous (new)

K-Gorgeous | 163 comments Yes. I can't remember the book but for me usually it is age or
my mental state. But now that I am more of an adult that hasn't happened yet.

message 3231: by Charlotte, Cheesy Cakes (new)

Charlotte (charkro) | 1798 comments QOTD: Anyone been watching any of the Olympics? If so, thoughts on what you've seen so far?

I've been watching the swimming races, myself. =)

message 3232: by Shari-amor, Doll Cake (new)

Shari-amor | 5275 comments I've been watching a lot of the events. Swimming, cycling, gymnastics and beach volleyball are the main ones that I've been watching. Been rooting for The Final Five girls (I love Aly from Team USA), Phelps, Ledecky and Hungary swimmer Katinka Hosszu. I really loved seeing Simone Manuel win the gold for the 100m freestyle. I about cried when she realized she got gold. Great moment.

message 3233: by Charlotte, Cheesy Cakes (new)

Charlotte (charkro) | 1798 comments Definitely agree on that Simone Manuel moment. The look on her face was priceless! =D

Been watching Katinka Hosszu, myself. This probably sounds un-American, but I've been rooting for her. =)

And I do love the Final Five, they're definitely awesome. The Chinese gymnastics team surprised me when I looked up their ages. I could have sworn that all of them were like, twelve. XD

message 3234: by Shari-amor, Doll Cake (new)

Shari-amor | 5275 comments Oh don't worry but I've been rooting for Katinka H. as well. She is a fantastic swimmer and fierce competitor

message 3235: by Shari-amor, Doll Cake (new)

Shari-amor | 5275 comments Hahaha I thought the same about the chinese girls. I seen them and was like "Are those kids!? They look like they're 10 or something!"

Someone in another group mentioned they hoped their ages werent fudged for the events because that happened in the last Olympics. I didnt know that

message 3236: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 1747 comments O_O thats awful on fudging about their ages last time

message 3237: by Myst (new)

Myst | 734 comments The chinese girls I don't think looked 12 in Rio. 16+. Of course the chinese tend to look young, but these girls didn't look *that* young.

I *think* the chinese had their medal from Beijing taken away from them for lying about their age/s. They had 10/11 year olds and I think the min age is 15/16? The Beijing girls when I first saw them, I really thought they looked prepubescent (and I was right, go figure).

I've been watching anything except swimming, tennis, martial arts, soccer, rugby or golf. I think swimming is boring and is given *way* too much coverage. The rest just don't interest me (and golf is the most boring thing to watch ever).

message 3238: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments I've only seen a few passing articles on different events via Yahoo. And who has the most medals. U.S. is definitely spanking some peeps to say the least. And I think I saw something the other day about the U.S. Gymnasts are going to do some kind of special act or performance or something at one of the arenas when they get back.

message 3239: by Shari-amor, Doll Cake (new)

Shari-amor | 5275 comments I think the Track and Field is where other countries will probably catch up with us in medals. From what I've seen so far of, not too good. It's still early though and I havent seen the other racers

message 3240: by Charlotte, Cheesy Cakes (new)

Charlotte (charkro) | 1798 comments That's what I'm thinking too, Shari. Just watched some of the men's track and field, and you're right, it doesn't look too good for the USA.

Yeah, I read up a bit on the age padding controversy in gymnastics. Turns out, the Chinese women's team was accused of age padding, but apparently everything checked out.

There was a Chinese gymnast who got a medal in 2000, and the age discrepancy was discovered in 2008, when she got a job with the Beijing Olympics and had to provide her birth certificate. (I thought that was pretty ironic, lol)

message 3241: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Smith (rlsauthor) | 626 comments Personally, I have no doubts there are at least two girls on the Chinese gymnastics team who are too young to be there. I saw two who looked prepubescent. None of them look overly healthy either.

And nobody inside gymnastics, from what I've heard, believes the Chinese "proof" that those girls were old enough that year. I don't believe it either.

message 3242: by Myst (new)

Myst | 734 comments Well one of the chinese girls this year has been sick with some sort of virus (and still competing), so that might be one of the less healthy looking ones.

Anyone notice that we saw next to nothing of Gabby Douglas? Of course the coverage on prime time has been very truncated...

message 3243: by Shari-amor, Doll Cake (new)

Shari-amor | 5275 comments Yaaaaay Katie Ledecky!!!!
she kicked ass!!!

message 3244: by Shari-amor, Doll Cake (new)

Shari-amor | 5275 comments Yeah we didnt get much of her. I didnt really trip off of it at first. Simone Biles seemed to be the favourite. Apparently ppl seemed to not like Gabby's attitude and didnt think she should have been there in the first place.

message 3245: by Shari-amor, Doll Cake (new)

Shari-amor | 5275 comments @Charlotte. Yeah I think I've seen only one male from the USA that will give other countries a run for their money. Right now though, China and Ethiopia are in the lead with 2 medals a piece. USA has none

message 3246: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Myst wrote: "Well one of the chinese girls this year has been sick with some sort of virus (and still competing), so that might be one of the less healthy looking ones.

I didn't read it, but I think they were saying something about Gabby Douglas having did some Black Lives Matter stand or something or other in passing articles I saw. And even someone was getting on Stiles cause she was adopted or something.

message 3247: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Smith (rlsauthor) | 626 comments There's some idiot "journalist" claiming Gabby's failure to put her hand over heart during the anthem was a stand for Black Lives Matter. Gabby denied it immediately.

Simone was adopted by her grandparents after her mom abandoned her and her sister when she was a toddler.

message 3248: by Shari-amor, Doll Cake (new)

Shari-amor | 5275 comments Ugh not everything always has to be politically or racially motivated. This isnt the only time I've seen some BS articles on the olympics trying to start something

message 3249: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments No kidding. Making a mountain out of nada as usual.

message 3250: by Charlotte, Cheesy Cakes (last edited Aug 14, 2016 08:17AM) (new)

Charlotte (charkro) | 1798 comments Yeah, those "articles" about Douglas are ridiculous.

I think we should be seeing more of Gabby Douglas next week when they do the individual gymnastics events. Apparently she didn't score high enough in the individual all-around event, to move on to the finals.

Yeah, Katie Ledecky definitely kicked ass! =D

(Wow ... and Phelps ended up with silver in his next-to-final race.)
