Shari-amor | 5275 comments Yeah I never knew there was a whole week dedicated to it. I'm still checking it out now

message 2652: by Shari-amor, Doll Cake (new)

Shari-amor | 5275 comments Oh wow have you read through the most challenged books from 1990-99

I'm hella surprised at some of these

message 2653: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Yea, I repeat from that list of the 90's I've read or seen the movie versions of these. And still amazed. And yet we have all been reading banned or challenged stuff given how familiar those titles are.

message 2654: by Shari-amor, Doll Cake (new)

Shari-amor | 5275 comments Where is Waldo? is on this list 0.0
What in the world!?

message 2655: by Manuela (last edited Sep 20, 2014 11:25PM) (new)

Manuela (manu21) | 2559 comments Hahahahaha at least four of those books are classic reading material in schools all over Germany. Lord of the Flies,To Kill a Mockingbird,Fahrenheit 451,The Catcher in the Rye Some of the others I read, some I heard of, some I saw as movies.

message 2656: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Dude all of those were on my reading list as well when I was in high school. I only got out of Lord of the Flies and Catcher in the Rye cause I was bumped up to advanced placement/college prep English. Which was mostly interpreting Romeo and Juliet type of stuff. But as it would seem if you haven't read such books you aren't even deemed as "well read" by most either. Really strange how that works.

message 2657: by Charlotte, Cheesy Cakes (new)

Charlotte (charkro) | 1798 comments Well, dang. I guess I've been participating in this for quite a few years, lol. It kills me how many children's books are on these lists--Maurice Sendak? Really? Oh, wait--must've been because there was a picture of a naked kid. Oh, the horror! /)_-

Oh yeah, I've either read many of these books or seen the movies, as have my kids. I guess we're thoroughly corrupted now. =D

I find it hilariously ironic that Fahrenheit 451 made the list. XD

That does it. I'll just have to go back and re-read D.H. Lawrence this week, in honor of this. And maybe dig up an old Stephen King book to re-read while I'm at it. XD

I bought the German edition of Fahrenheit 451 as I haven't been able to get an English one. I read that one in school and we saw the movie. Since I love books and am addicted to reading I found it very disturbing but also glad that the MC was redeeming himself by helping others rescue the books and question his directives.
I read Lord of the flies in High School in the US and in Germany a year later. I got out of the other two because the parallel classes were reading those. We read Macbeth later on.
I don't really like Stephen King but I read IT and The Firestarter. And some of his short stories.
Some of the books I don't know, but then it is called "challenged books", therefore one should be able to read them but be cautious of the content.

message 2659: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Ah yea I definitely remember reading Fahrenheit 451 in school. Even had a test over it and the teacher having a question of us writing an essay answer in a different way than we would normally would do it. So naturally folks were folding the test up and doing it all crazy like lol. Good times. What kills me though is the fact that aot of these books defined our lives. Without them who would we be?

message 2660: by Shari-amor, Doll Cake (new)

Shari-amor | 5275 comments I just find it strange that these books are on a school's curriculum but people don't want them on there. I've read the majority of the books and to be honest if these books were being challenged at the time they were published, I could understand that. In the 90s and 2000s though, STILL being challenged. That is hella crazy. Just when you think we're progressing, turns out we're not.

message 2661: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Well I think on the school curriculum they still want the kids to be aware of differences in view points and opinions through books. Mind you, you can't express them that freely in the classroom at times. But to broaden the young minds it's ok. As for still being challenged, I think that site more than proved all the 99 and thensome reasons why they will always be challenged. Cause in a world where there is still someone that will play cds backwards and hear the devil or think just the slightest bit of mention of sex is a crime. There will always be a voice out there saying how bad this or that is and shouldn't be read by anyone anywhere. I'm just glad we still aren't in the times though where people would actually get tossed in a jail somewhere for reading these books though. That would be the real problem I would think. But then we already have enough overcrowding even there, lol. So I think we're reasonably safe.

If you could have dinner with one person dead or alive, who would it be and why?

message 2663: by Manuela (new)

Manuela (manu21) | 2559 comments With you Pumkin Pie, just to cheer you up ;)

message 2664: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Yea, I second what Manuela has said. You of course care bear. Have missed you around these parts. Although I wouldn't be opposed to Ben Franklin too.

message 2665: by Carlena, Pumpkin Pie/Care Bear (new)

Carlena | 1753 comments Aww you two are sweetie pies!

Why Ben?

message 2666: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Dude that flew the kite with the key and such. Have to hand it to the original experimenters of our time. Even if they didn't seem to know much they were bold enough to try all kinds of stuff.

message 2667: by Shari-amor, Doll Cake (new)

Shari-amor | 5275 comments I've seen a few memes and some blog posts with this topic but I wanted to ask it as a QOTD

New Question: What would you do if your favourite author wrote a book where the main character slowly fell in love with the reader!? In other words, you!

message 2668: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 1747 comments Haha, my friend and I talked about this one too XD. And no clue lol. Not sure if i would like it or not. It would be kinda neat to try out a book like that tho and see. On the other hand if thats all that some ppl read it might be worse than it already is for some who don't really separate irl and the books theyre reading. good food for thought tho shari XD.

message 2669: by Shari-amor, Doll Cake (new)

Shari-amor | 5275 comments That's definitely a good point though about the readers that already can't separate fantasy and reality. I can imagine the uproar from them if a book didnt turn out the way they wanted.

I think it would be cool though despite that point. Made to feel like I'm a part of the story instead as a spectator.

message 2670: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Hmm, not sure how I feel about that. I mean how far would it go with the character falling in love with the reader? Cause as you pointed out sis, with some folks that can't separate fun/fantasy stuff with reality. Then there would be some even more bonkers folks when the character still isn't acting the way they wish.

I also feel like that would be a very boring book if the character fell for me. As I like being that third party spectator. Watching and seeing what the characters will do, what their thinking processes is, maybe even learn something from them along the way. Pulling me too much into it, when it's not a choose your own adventure book. Would just be weird.

message 2671: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 1747 comments yeah i think itd be kinda neat to try. readers for that would def have to be able to seperate themselves between the book and irl tho or else it could get pretty bad id think O_O. on the other hand LOL idk if itd be really weird to read something like that tbh. still would be neat and interesting for something def different.

message 2672: by Mare (new)

Mare Hernandez (mare9548) | 35 comments I'm with you, ladies. There are pros and cons. In one hand, I might feel part of the story, but in the other I'm not fond of the stories in that POV. They get boring pretty quick.

message 2673: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Q: What would you do if you came across a loved one's diary/journal? Would you be tempted to peek? Leave it alone? What if you had just had an argument and it was over a secret they were keeping. Would you read it then?

message 2674: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 1747 comments im not sure if u mean ur bf or a loved one in general such as a friend or fam member but no wouldnt read it. tempted, yes, but wouldnt do it.

message 2675: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Could be anybody sis. And good call.

message 2676: by Shari-amor, Doll Cake (new)

Shari-amor | 5275 comments No I wouldn't do it. I know I would flip the fuck out if someone read my personal thoughts or feelings. I'm extremely private. I would and could never do that to another person. It's too much of a violation to me

message 2677: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments I won't lie I'd be awfully tempted for sure to read it if there was something I felt someone was keeping from me. And I know that is hypocritical cause I'd likely flip my wig if someone read my private thoughts without my permission. But if it was just laying there I'd leave it alone, cause I just wouldn't be that interested/care what someone is writing. As I'm more than likely hear about something from that person in one way or another. And rather I'd WANT to know about it or not even lol.

message 2678: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 1747 comments LOL sis

message 2679: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Haha, it is my luck to have that happen sometimes. Peeps telling me all kinds of stuff that I didn't even want to know about.

message 2680: by Shari-amor, Doll Cake (new)

Shari-amor | 5275 comments You have that "must tell her all dark secrets and rumours" face. lol

message 2681: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Yea inherited from the parentals. Dude they get so many folks just talking to them in the stores and hospitals on the random lol.

message 2682: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 1747 comments LMAO omg ur parents too sis -dead-

message 2683: by Shari-amor, Doll Cake (new)

Shari-amor | 5275 comments QOTD: How are you preparing for Christmas this year!?

message 2684: by Manuela (new)

Manuela (manu21) | 2559 comments We do have a QOTD? Yay...
Prepare for Christmas... Hmmmmm, well, I decided on a colour sceme for the tree, I started buying the baubles - not easy and expensive. I went to a mall in a not so nice area and some little turts threw a rock at my car. One window was broken and had to be replaced. - I have ordered the sausages for Christmas eve dinner and I have the odd present ready for wrapping...

message 2685: by Shari-amor, Doll Cake (new)

Shari-amor | 5275 comments Oh wow. That is craziness. You were in it when rocks were thrown at it, were you!?

message 2686: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 1747 comments O_O wow thats awful that some kids threw a rock at ur car :/.

i'm trying to finish christmas shopping LOL -falls over-

message 2687: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Smith (rlsauthor) | 626 comments Our living room and dining room are decorated and we're getting our trees tomorrow. Only have a handful of gifts to buy and that'll all be done next week.

message 2688: by Shari-amor, Doll Cake (new)

Shari-amor | 5275 comments Yay. Sounds like its coming together for y'all. Do y'all use real trees or artificial ones!?

message 2689: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Smith (rlsauthor) | 626 comments We get real ones. Two! One in the dining room and one in the living room. When I was growing up we lived in a house with a 14 foot ceiling in the living room, so we'd get the biggest tree we could find. The ornament collection is enough to cover a 12 foot tree that's six feet across, minimum, at the bottom.

So we get two so we don't have to be so choosy about which ornaments to put on.

message 2690: by Shari-amor, Doll Cake (new)

Shari-amor | 5275 comments Oh wow. That is wicked cool. That would be cool to see a tree that size in someone's house. It must have taken a bit of time to get all the ornaments on it though.

message 2691: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Smith (rlsauthor) | 626 comments Yes, it did. And one year the tree was so big we didn't have enough ornaments or lights.

message 2692: by Shari-amor, Doll Cake (new)

Shari-amor | 5275 comments Haha! and I'm sure y'all had to move ornaments around to make it look as if it were full

message 2693: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Smith (rlsauthor) | 626 comments With this tree, there was no moving stuff around to make it look full. It was THAT BIG. There was no way to make it look full. It still ranks as one of our best trees ever.

message 2694: by Shari-amor, Doll Cake (new)

Shari-amor | 5275 comments Now do y'all cut your own trees or did you get this from a lot!?

message 2695: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Smith (rlsauthor) | 626 comments That one was found for us by a florist. We lived in the middle of the middle of nowhere and this particular florist knew exactly what we wanted so he'd always find a tree for us when he went on his winter real flower shopping trips. This was back in the early 90's.

Here in Louisiana we don't have cut your own Christmas trees. Unless you want a cypress tree. We usually get ours at Lowe's. We don't really have lots here either. And when there is a lot, they never have the kind of tree we want.

message 2696: by Shari-amor, Doll Cake (new)

Shari-amor | 5275 comments Ah gotcha. Maybe I'm slow but I never knew that Lowe's sold trees. I'm use to seeing trees sold on vacant lands or odd parking lots.

message 2697: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Smith (rlsauthor) | 626 comments They do down here. Walmart too, and Home Depot.

message 2698: by Shari-amor, Doll Cake (new)

Shari-amor | 5275 comments I'd be scared to get a tree from the Wal-Mart here.

message 2699: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Smith (rlsauthor) | 626 comments Walmart doesn't carry our favorite kind, so we never look there.

Manuela (manu21) | 2559 comments Shari-amor wrote: "Oh wow. That is craziness. You were in it when rocks were thrown at it, were you!?"

Yes I was in it. I was just driving away from one shopping centre to go to another and sitting idling at a traffic light, when a group of about 6 or 7 youths crossed the street behind my car, caused a bus to stop so that he didn't hit them and then (the bus had left) I heard this loud bang, did the turtle shrug and saw a rock a bit bigger than my fist roll onto the road next to my car. I saw them running away to the train station but I did not get out. I drove to the other shopping centre and then checked my car. I called hubby as soon as I saw the smashed window and then I drove to the police station and reported it. I hadn't even realized that I could have been injured but a friend on fb pointed it out to me. I had the window open on the driver's side and the back window on that side was hit.
