Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Exactly. I think movies like this in the first place need not so well known peeps in the lead. I mean once you have sorta already "made it", I think folks judge it against your other bodies of work and well it's just not good at all. And actually doesn't give the movie it's do as it's about those well knowns and not how the movie actually is.

agreed. its hard for me to watch a movie that was made on a book if the main chars are famous actors and actresses. takes a while to get into.

Shari-amor | 5275 comments *Falls out* I would fangirl the shit out of the movie if Skarsgard was in it. I wouldn't be able to handle that hotness in Fifty Shades. Geez Amaya, give me a heart attack why dont ya!? :-p

message 2508: by Shari-amor, Doll Cake (new)

Shari-amor | 5275 comments But whhhhhhy!? Geez it's just sex. I've seen worse topics in movies. Nobody wants to get naked but quick to be a serial killler or a sick psychotic pedophile or something.

message 2509: by Shari-amor, Doll Cake (new)

Shari-amor | 5275 comments OMG. *wipes forehead* Thank goodness or otherwise I would have died right there in the theater but what a happy way to go

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Shari-amor wrote: "But whhhhhhy!? Geez it's just sex. I've seen worse topics in movies. Nobody wants to get naked but quick to be a serial killler or a sick psychotic pedophile or something."

I think it's not just the sex really. I mean true from what sis said it could very well end up turning out to be a porn. Or even about nudity in general really. Given how they aren't shy about sharing boobs and other sexual acts in most flicks. But I think for most celebs too, could be they don't want to be a part of something they don't really understand either. I mean there are so many people out there that still don't quite get the lifestyle of what BDSM and kinkier sexual choices of others. Add to that, how many have said(people in general) that 50 Shades is soooooooooo not an accurate portrayal of the BDSM lifestyle.

And to play a part in that for someone that is more well known. I think they might feel like they are in support of this "abusive" story. And probably can't hack how that would affect their image. Hence I said earlier. With less well known peeps, whom may still feel the same as the more well known actors too privately, but for the less well knowns. Those that are truly hungry to make it in that industry. I think they are still going to be hungry enough to get out there and make a name for themselves that they are going to willing to be a bit more bold and daring. To possibly show they can act in ANY thing and be known as someone that is not pigeon-holed by particular roles. But I'm sure after some more hard work and time in their field, even they don't wish to be THAT daring after a while once they get on more steadier ground with their careers. Unless it is in roles where they can get a little dirty, ugly, or something like that to get their Oscars.

message 2513: by Shari-amor, Doll Cake (new)

Shari-amor | 5275 comments So no one wants softcore porn to go Hollywood!? Gotcha. I think it's BS but I get it. And I can understand about not wanting to be tied to something that's already become a bit controversial especially with all the hype around the book.

message 2514: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Hmm, I don't think it's that black and white. Because there is somewhat softcore porn in movies like Original Sin, 9 1/2 weeks, Lie with me(which I loved), Basic Instinct, etc. that have already been made. But more about the message and the BDSM aspect of things. I mean sure there can be tons of regular sex going on in movies and even a bit of light spankings or even a bit of light choking play (Basic Instinct 2) and that is just a bit rough and kinky. But when it comes to restraining and whipping a woman. Making a young "inexperienced" girl sign a contract that signs away her life to this man. That only wants her cause she in some way ties into his issues with his mom. That spits in the face of what so many believe in. And feminists groups and other such people are up in arms. And what message is it saying to young girls. And dude the list goes on and on. And even though I'm not an actress(no inclination to ever be one) and enjoy the occasional BDSM story. Dude, I'd hate to deal with all that flack as well and drop out of the movie.

message 2515: by Shari-amor, Doll Cake (new)

Shari-amor | 5275 comments Lol I'd go for it though. Well the world better get ready cause it's happening. I think we've been working towards this anyway regardless of how all these groups feel. Sex has gotten bolder, edgier and has been pushing the envelope more in movies. I don't care how they all feel. If violence is revered so much then they'll have to deal with sex, BDSM, CG's mommy issues, and Ana being owned.

message 2516: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Haha, and that is why I love ya Shari. I'd root for ya! ;) In some respects I agree with you on that. From the violence and edgier themes for sure. Just there is still a baseline puritanical air to the U.S. still at times that I don't think most would outright agree with. But when stuff like this comes up, oh yea it really comes up. But without a doubt there are going to be peeps seeing it in droves either way. Sex sells even more so than most beliefs at times.

message 2517: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 1747 comments i agree with sis rofl

Jennifer | 1747 comments yes XD

message 2521: by Shari-amor, Doll Cake (new)

Shari-amor | 5275 comments Lol now I'm worried that they're gonna downplay the spankings and bondage in the movie.

message 2522: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Well it will be NC-17 right? So in that, should go rather far. But yea, all out over extension of whipping or flogging her would be a big no, no. Hell might even get a freaking lecture from grown ups the world over.

message 2523: by Shari-amor, Doll Cake (new)

Shari-amor | 5275 comments Is it!? I actually didn't pay attention to what the rating would be. This'll be very interesting

message 2524: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Although from what Jennifer and I was discussing a bit ago. Sounded like the director was leaning towards R. But folks was saying not everything can fit into an R rating. But really don't know how he will play things up or not. Not just the sex but other aspects of the book too. But we shall see.

message 2525: by Shari-amor, Doll Cake (new)

Shari-amor | 5275 comments I think NC-17 would be a better move anyway or hardcore fans would probably riot. The book might not be classic or realistic bdsm but it's still erotica. Why downplay it!? I wonder how big this movie is gonna be when it hits theaters. I can't even imagine the mayhem and the turnout

message 2526: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Yea NC-17 I guessed right off the bat. Would just make sense. But who knows which way they go with things. And no doubt it will be a heck of a V-day weekend for sure.

message 2527: by Shari-amor, Doll Cake (new)

Shari-amor | 5275 comments Ooooo a whole lot of babies are gonna be conceived. I can see every woman dragging her man to see this and wanting to reenact some scenes. It's gonna be bananas

message 2528: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Haha perhaps. Or be just so overly turned off cause the guy isn't hot enough for them. But on the entertainment news said the boyfriends and hubbies are at the ready for them to say the least lol.

message 2529: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 1747 comments LOL maybe im just weird but tbh i think itd be weird to go on a date specifically to see that on v-day when u can go do other v-day stuff. then again ive never been one to plan to see a specific movie on v-day.

message 2530: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Dude I'd kick someone's ass if that was their only plans for V-day as well. Like dude you couldn't even pick up the cheap flowers and chocolates? Spent all the money on 1 movie? How about I whip you for free and in a non-kinky way just so you can be part of the "festivities" of the show? lol.

message 2531: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 1747 comments LMAO sis. idk if the movie was part of the day itd be ok. dont really care how much they spend. rofl but itd be nice if the day were actually special haha.

message 2532: by Shari-amor, Doll Cake (new)

Shari-amor | 5275 comments I'm not a Valentine's day person lol but if this is in the plans so not gonna complain. Caramel candies and a book would make it extra special. haha

message 2533: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments For me not really the amount of cash spent. It's just my mama without fail can give me chocolates. Why can't the date? I'm about the experience of things. Don't have to buy me jewelry. And go super out of your way for one day. But it's V-day anybody can pick up the flowers and candy, and even from walgreen's. To not try, you slacking already to me. Most especially if I take the effort to get your fave dessert or something.

message 2534: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 1747 comments let us know how it goes shari if u see it. lmao all this talk about v-day candy has me picturing those candy boxes where u take a bite to see what kind of chocolate it is bc u cant tell and end up dumping most of em rofl

Rachel Smith (rlsauthor) | 626 comments Christian Grey is an abusive controlling psychopath and most of what he does throughout the books would get him sent to jail. I'll be doing my damnedest to make certain I never watch a movie with either of these people in it, for as long as I live.

I have a VERY strong opinion about these books being not just trash, but dangerous, destructive trash. They set forth an example of a "relationship" that NO ONE should ever seek out. Grey is Artemis on steroids.

Angie | 102 comments Can I be a rebel and continue the Fifty discussion a little longer? I missed the whole thing and just found out about it with my daily GR email. If it's not cool, admins delete this post if you want. It's my own fault for not jumping in this pool before so that I'd have gotten more emails about it!

I looked up the rating, and the only thing I could find was from last November, when the director said he's going to TRY to get an R rating, but also do an NC-17 rated movie for select theaters. I believe that even if they aren't able to release the NC-17 to theaters, there will most definitely be one with that rating released on DVD or maybe even a completely unrated one for video release. The trailer did show her hands tied up to the bed in the playroom and also a couple whips I believe. Who knows how much action those things will get in an R rated movie, but as has been mentioned before, worse things have happened. In my opinion, if they can show a violent rape in an R rated movie, they should most definitely be able to show two consenting adults in a fully stocked playroom with whatever toys they choose to play with.

That being said, I've spoken to a few people that live the BDSM lifestyle and they have all said that this story seems like the author read a few stories with BDSM in it, but didn't research it fully nor has she ever lived it. But as that I only know what I've read in stories, it didn't seem too far off from what most mainstream people would expect BDSM to be. My problem is that he has an obsession with women that look like his mother, who did him wrong, and he's punishing these women for something that was done to him 20 years before. They were not involved in the abuse that happened to him and he shouldn't be punishing them for it. However, it is FICTION. So it's not like I can influence the man's decisions on what he should or shouldn't be doing. A few decades in therapy and he may be "normal" again, but that doesn't mean he won't still be into BDSM and all that goes with it.

Shari-amor wrote: "*Falls out* I would fangirl the shit out of the movie if Skarsgard was in it. I wouldn't be able to handle that hotness in Fifty Shades. Geez Amaya, give me a heart attack why dont ya!? :-p"

There was discussion early on of my main man, and apparently Shari's too, being Christian. He even did an interview saying something about he's been training for the role for the past 6 years (this was before season 7 of TB started filming), and his current role even included his very own sex cave! I don't know how hard he pushed to try to get the role, but I'm actually kind of glad he didn't. I think he would quickly get typecast as a perv, even though I don't personally thing Eric or Christian are pervs, but that's not always how others look at things. I am super excited about his new role in Tarzan, I just read the description of the movie last night and it looks amazing.

As for my opinion of the actors, here we go, and feel free to yell at me as much as you want. I've read the books but not the original Masters of The Universe, though I do have it on my kindle or computer somewhere. (She sent out copies before she published I believe, and those copies have made their way around the interwebz like any other viral outbreak.) Christian is supposed to be intimidating and larger than life. I don't remember hair or eye color at this point, so I have no idea how well they did with that, but it's not always as important as the overall feel of the actor playing the character. To me, Jamie does not have the machismo, let's call it, to pull off the character the way it was originally written. But I say that as someone who has not seen his work. Also I'm going off the trailer, the little bit we see in that. He didn't seem as in-your-face as I'd think they would make him. And I do agree he would look more intimidating with some scruff. He also seems to innocent in those few moments of the trailer. He doesn't appear to be an alpha or a Dom in that time. Again, only my opinion, which is easily changed with evidence. I won't know for sure until I see more of the movie.

The actress, Dakota Johnson, has not been on my radar at all. I may have watched 5 minutes of Ben and Kate, which she's in, but it didn't hold my attention for even half that time. I don't know how good or bad of an actress she is, or Jamie either for that matter, but to me she seemed too YOUNG in the clips. When she's sitting in his office interviewing him at the very beginning, she looks about 12 to me. I tried to find a pic of it, but it didn't work out for me. There's only 8 pictures on IMDB, and only one of her face. She is inexperienced and naive, but she's still about 24 years old. Which IRL, Dakota is 25, it just seems they overdid the attempt at making her naive. But she may very well pull it all off and make me feel silly for thinking she was a bad choice. Same for Jamie. I'm feeling picky, and even though I have no plans to see this in the theater, I do get annoyed when the actor seems so far off from the written character. But as that they aren't well known or well established yet, maybe these roles will show the world how amazing they are!!

Jennifer | 1747 comments Dhfan4life wrote: "New Question: Which do you prefer? Reviews with or without spoilers?"

it depends on the book. usually i dont like the "major" spoilers but the minor ones arent so bad. just depends on if its one of the few series that i follow closely or not. since most of the time when i glance a book review its before reading the book.
